MAXMSMicro Air-Launched Expendable Meteorological SensorQinetiQ North America’s MAXMS dropsonde continuously measures wind speed, winddirection, pressure, temperature and humidity while descending through the air columnand transmits the data directly to the user via UHF transmitter. The MAXMS may be packagedfor hand launch from an aircraftor deployed from a standardmilitary Counter MeasuresDispenser System (CMDS) usingan explosive squib. QinetiQNorth America’s TacticalMeteorological Sensor (TMS)Pod contains a modified ALE-47 dispenser to hold up tofour MAXMS. The TMS Podis lightweight (< 15 pounds)and may be mounted on anUnmanned Aircraft Vehicle(UAV) to remotely deployMAXMS dropsondes.Upon deployment of theMAXMS, the upper part of thepackaging falls away allowingthe parachute to deploy. The MAXMS can be deployedfrom altitudes up to 25,000 feetand has an average fall rate of25ft/sec to provide accurate,real-time wind profiles. The MAXMS electronicsconsist of a GPS receiver, atemperature/humidity sensor,a pressure sensor, a microcomputerfor data acquisitionand processing, a UHFtransmitter (400-406MHz), andis powered by lithium batteries.A UHF receiver combined witha standard computer locatedwithin range of the dropsonderecords the transmitted data. The MAXMS transmitter is fullycompatible with the PrecisionAirdrop System (PADS)/Joint Precision Airdrop System(JPADS) receiver.QinetiQ-NA.comWHEN IT’S CRITICAL, IT’S QINETIQ
