The sign in front of the Silver Saddle Motel.Lezlee's bikegetting repaired byAl Robertson andMike Haxton.Downtown Colorado Springs anda nice view of the mountains.congregated away from the pumps for a shortbreak, only to find that I had picked up a hitchhiker. You have heard of stowaways in the wheelwells of airliners and their fate? Well this iswhat happens to frogs when they jumpaboard a Gold Wing! (See photo.) Poor thing. Now I am not squeamish about killingthings if I have to for survival, but truth betold, I would rather allow someone else tobludgeon my food for me.And it had honestlynever occurred to me to use a motorcycleas a frog-hunting device. Growing up in ruralFlorida, we had always used a spear or a gig tocatch them. This poor guy must have beenvery surprised when he hopped up into thepath of my oncoming motorcycle.Well, most of us were a little disgusted byit all…but no, not good old Johnnie Crow; hedidn’t seem to mind one bit! In fact, hethought it was kinda tasty! (Look closely atthe picture in this article, and you’ll spy abulge in Johnnie’s cheek. My guess is thatbreakfast in Abilene did not quite fill him up.Johnnie said it was a shame to waste such afresh road kill. It’s hard to argue with that.(Just kidding, by the way.)But now that I’ve ribbed Johnnie, I’d like tomention that: Remember my philosophyabout being on time? Well every time wewere going somewhere, Johnnie was alwaysready to go. So I now call him “Johnnie On theSpot”. And, being the one who was alwaysprompt, that’s why he got to call “dibbs” onthe frog. (Hey, couldn’t help myself on thatone, Johnnie.)A Study in Gratitude: Ridingwith the Ingrates!Al did a great job of dodging the clouds upuntil Salina. Of course he was off I-70 for partof that ride and it was easy for him to dodgethe rain. I also didn’t know at the time that hecould see the rain coming in. But that’s whenhe decided I should lead. Now of course, being on I-70 for awhile,we had to go straight. And go straight wedid…right into some of the biggest raindropssince Forrest Gump was in Vietnam! Luckilywe stopped off on the side of the road andput on our raingear for the wet period. But Istill caught H-E-double toothpicks for gettingthe group wet.I tried pointing out that, up until that point, they had not had the opportunity to weartheir expensive wet-weather gear and that ithad actually been dry rotting in the saddlebags. I told the group I had done them all afavor by leading them smack into the rain sothat they could moisten their raingear materialand, hence, extend its life. After all, I reasoned, that would save them money in thelong run. But was I shown any gratitude? No!Instead, I was reminded several times thatAl had made sure we did not get wet under60 Wing World
