A lot will depend on the ChapterDirector and how he or she guides the group. But one thing you will find is—there is camaraderieand acceptance if you put yourself intoit. And being from the area you are from, I’mwilling to bet the group knows how to ridecurvy roads. We love that area! Also, we like to see riders your age joinus. It keeps us younger. We can attest to that—people often take us to be a number of yearsyounger than we are.We say “Go for it”—take a chance to seewhat the “old folks” are like. We ourselveshave seen some pretty lively people from theBranson-Springfield area!Betty & Ed ThorntonGWRRA #2555Chapter A, IowaMike, I received myWing World today, saw your letter, and feltcompelled to answer. Ithought it would be agood chance for othersin our age group andyounger to realize thata Wing is for ALL ages.I, like you, began riding a Gold Wing as a“younger adult”. My Gold Wing/GWRRAexperiences began when I was 23 and in theNavy in California. I was frequently told byfriends and family that I shouldn’t be riding aGold Wing because it was for “older adults”.I just explained that I didn’t need the speed(although it is there) and that I preferred ridingin style. And when I talked through theintercom, listened to music or kicked back andput my feet up, my other biker friends werejealous. After giving a few rides, some friendsactually went out and purchased a Wing themselves(all were under 30 years old).Like you mentioned in your article, onereason I believe there are fewer young ridersis the discretionary money issue. As a youngadult, a Gold Wing is a costly expense in additionto a house, car/truck, diapers, and manyother things (like trips to Disney). But in manyways, as I found out, it is not the Gold Wing thatis expensive but rather all of the longtrips/vacations you want to take on it, plus theice cream stops, and everything else that addsup. (Smile.)Over the past 10-15 years, I have seen thatchange, though. I believe that more people aregetting bikes and commuting 30-50 miles towork on them. This is made more difficult ifyou have to do it while lying on the tank. Also, the Wing now has so many stylish accessoriesthat it can easily be modified to fit anyone’stastes.I am currently 42 and my family and I havemany friends our age in GWRRA. Some ofthem belong in our Chapter and others arethroughout the state and nation. Our experiencewith the Wing and GWRRA is likely differentthan most; nonetheless, it has been a12 Wing World
great one. My wife and I were riding a Wing forseveral years when we found out she waspregnant.A month later, another couple in ourChapter became pregnant. We needed tomake a decision: Do we give up the Wing andmotorcycles or do we keep riding? After careful consideration, both of us couplespurchased a sidecar. Our son, Nate, isnow 10 and has grown up with the GWRRAfamily. And I believe he is a better child for it.He is well known in GWRRA Wisconsin andwas extremely excited last year when he wonthe Funny Mascot at Wing Ding. Nate is one ofa number of kids his age who ride with parentsor grandparents. As a family, we have takennumerous trips through the U.S. on the Wing.We have been to California, Texas, Alabamaand more, all on the Wing. You stated in your letter you feel you andyour wife “would have very little in commonwith other Members”. I would say otherwise. For instance, I can only assume you like yourGold Wing...there’s one thing in common. I canassume you like to ride…there’s two. If youare like us, you like ice cream and eating out…three. And there are a large number of us whosponsor a charity, the Pediatric Brain TumorFoundation (Ride for Kids). Plus, there are somany other things I have in common with othersin our membership that I can’t begin to tellyou all of them.We have great friends that areall ages. In fact, one of our best friends turns70 this year, and other friends are in their 80sand still riding. Still others are our age withkids. Our GWRRA friends (our family) haveshared their lives with us just as our friendsoutside of GWRRA. In our experience, agedoesn’t seem to be an issue. All in all, I can say we have a family builtaround GWRRA and our Wing. This is bothour personal family (spouse and son) as well asour extended GWRRA family. We are currentlythe Chapter Directors of Wisconsin Din Dells. We have been involved in manyaspects of GWRRA, and it has only made usbetter, safer riders.I have included several pictures of ouradventures to let you see that this is truly afamily fun group with events for all ages. (Theone you see here is of Nate with his trophy atWing Ding last year.)My suggestion for you and your wife wouldbe to give it a try.Try some Chapters in yourarea and see what fun events they have goingon. Our family participates with severalChapters.I think GWRRA’s motto of “Friends forFun, Safety and Knowledge” really sums it upbest.Tim, Louise & Nate SchuellerGWRRA #111723Chapter Directors,WI-D(Ed.
