<strong>JCCC</strong> offers full-time and parttime<strong>Esthetics</strong> programs and an<strong>Esthetics</strong> Essential update course• <strong>Johnson</strong> <strong>County</strong> Community College <strong>Esthetics</strong> program isa PIVOT POINT member school. e PIVOT POINT <strong>Esthetics</strong>curriculum is recognized for the abilities and quality of itsgraduates. To complement this curriculum, <strong>JCCC</strong> providesstudents with an exceptional instructional and salon facility.<strong>JCCC</strong> graduates are well prepared for the Kansas State Boardof Cosmetology licensure examination leading to professionallicensure.• Students learn theory and skill development in sanitation, skinsciences, skin treatments, proper use of esthetician machines,waxing, makeup and business practices.• Upon successful completion of the <strong>Esthetics</strong> program, studentsare prepared to take the Kansas State Board of Cosmetology forEstheticians licensure written and practical exams.Full-time class meets 40 hours per week• Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m.• Starting the sixth week of class, salon hours include:ursdays 11 a.m.-8 p.m.• A seven-month course of 1,000 clock hours• Courses begin once a year in August (fall semester)Part-time class meets 20 hours per week• Monday-Wednesday 5:30-9:30 p.m.Saturday9 a.m.-5:30 p.m.• Salon hours begin the eleventh week of class• 13-month course of 1,000 clock hours• Courses begin once a year in August (fall semester)Additional <strong>Esthetics</strong> education• <strong>JCCC</strong> also offers <strong>Esthetics</strong> Essential, an update course of 100 contact hours, to the professional estheticians reflectingKansas State Board expansion of the esthetician scope of practice. is program is offered based on community needs.Cost: in-state tuition is $1,162 and out-of-state tuition is $2,080. Deadline to apply• Priority deadline for both the full-time and part-time courses is April 15 for the fall semester.• Applications accepted aer priority deadline are based on availability, call 913-469-8500, ext. 4708, to inquire.• Students must be able to enroll and pay for tuition, books and kit in full the day before classes start.Application process1. ere is no application fee. Submit thefollowing documents to the mailing address below:• Completed <strong>Esthetics</strong> application (in this <strong>packet</strong>)• Official high school or GED scores• All foreign transcripts must be translated byEducational Credential Evaluators, Inc. (ECE) beforethe priority deadline. Kansas State Board ofCosmetology will not accept translation from anyother company. Selection process1. All application documents, transcripts and theCOMPASS test score must be received before a potentialstudent will be interviewed. e applicants will beinterviewed by staff member(s). e interview will lastapproximately 20 minutes.2. Each applicant will be asked the same questions and theinterviewer will assign a score. Questions will coverknowledge of the field, full-time and part-time studentchallenges, teamwork, communication and specificsituational issues. To be considered, you must meet theminimum score for the interview of 26 (out of 40 possiblepoints). Students receiving the minimum score or higherwill be ranked according to interview scores andCOMPASS scores and will be admitted according totheir ranking.3. A maximum of 12 students for the full-time program and12 students for the part-time program will be acceptedinto the <strong>Esthetics</strong> program. e remaining interviewedcandidates will be placed on a possible list for availableopenings until the day before the first day of class.4. A letter of acceptance will be mailed by registered mailwith a Student Acceptance Letter to be signed by thestudent and returned to the school within 10 workingdays of receiving the letter. If your acceptance letter is notreceived within 10 working days of receipt, the nextstudent on the list will be offered the spot. ose notselected will also be notified by mail.Tuition deposit• A $150 tuition deposit is due in the Business office(115 GEB) on the main campus with the signedacceptance letter. is deposit holds your place inclass and is applied toward tuition.Transferability of credits• <strong>JCCC</strong> does not accept nor transfer credits from or toanother cosmetology school or program.Missouri hours• Missouri licensure requires 750 <strong>Esthetics</strong> hours; therefore,this <strong>JCCC</strong> <strong>Esthetics</strong> program will satisfy the Missourilicensure requirements.Student orientation• Students must attend orientation on the first day of class.is session will enable students to meet the staff andlearn more about the program. Student expectations willbe reviewed as written in the student handbook. eactual date of the first day of class will be listed in theacceptance letter.8Attendance• Students must successfully complete all requiredcurriculum and hours for a semester before graduating.Esthetic students must complete 1,000 hours. Studentsmust also maintain an 82 percent academic level tocomplete the program.• If required hours are not completed by scheduled enddate, the student will receive an “F” for that semester.Students must retake the course at the current rate oftuition. Hours already taken will not be credited tothe next course or sent to the Kansas State Board ofCosmetology.• ere is a maximum hours absence policy for each groupof courses. Once a student exceeds the maximum hoursthey are removed from the program and hours will not becredited to the next course or sent to the Kansas StateBoard of Cosmetology. Unused absent hours from one setof courses will not carry over into the next, no exceptions.Dress code• e <strong>Esthetics</strong> student dress code includes solid blackslacks/trousers, solid black skirt or dress (ankle-length,no slits) solid black, white or gray shirts that coverunderarms, midriff and lower back at all times includingbending and closed-toe shoes. is code was establishedto follow the Kansas State Board of Cosmetology and<strong>JCCC</strong> <strong>Esthetics</strong> program guidelines.


Frequently asked questions1. What method is used to train students? We offer smallclasses taught by licensed instructors. Students are trainedin methods of skin care. e first part of the semester,students are taught through lecture, demonstration,working on mannequins and/or other students, readingtextbook(s), completing workbooks and taking tests.<strong>Esthetics</strong> students are required to complete a specificnumber of classroom hours before working on clients.While working on clients, additional classes andassignments will occur weekly.2. What if I am only interested in one program area?Students can choose to focus on Cosmetology, <strong>Esthetics</strong>(skin care) or Nail Technology and pursue state licensurein that area alone. ose wanting credentials in nail andskin with a broader base experience in hair shouldconsider the cosmetology area. If you would like more<strong>information</strong> on the Cosmetology or Nail Technologyprograms, call 913-469-2390 and request that specific<strong>packet</strong>s be mailed to you. If you receive your <strong>Esthetics</strong>licensure and wish to continue with the Cosmetologyprogram, the Kansas State Board of Cosmetology and<strong>JCCC</strong> will apply 150 hours toward your coursework aswell as lower your tuition for your last semester in theCosmetology program.3. How many students apply and how many are admitted?Presently there are 12 students admitted to the full-time<strong>Esthetics</strong> program and 12 students admitted to the parttime<strong>Esthetics</strong> program. It is important to the quality ofthe program that students have appropriate workspaces,access to equipment and significant student/teachercontact, so it is necessary to limit the number of studentsadmitted. Presently there are also 12 students admitted tothe Cosmetology programs each semester, and sixstudents admitted to the full-time and part-time NailTechnology programs each class. e total number ofapplicants varies, but has consistently increased.4. Is there a deadline for application materials? Yes, there is adeadline date. (Refer to the “Deadline to apply”<strong>information</strong> listed before the application process.) Weencourage you to complete all steps as early as possible.5. I have already taken the <strong>JCCC</strong> assessment test. Do I haveto take the COMPASS? Yes, you will have to take theCOMPASS if we notify you. Note: If you have alreadytaken the COMPASS in the past two years, you are notrequired to take it again. However, if you took theassessment test, you will be required to take theCOMPASS. is ensures a standard measure by whicheach applicant is reviewed.6. What will be expected of me in the interview process?It is simply an opportunity for you and our staff tobecome familiar with each other. Questions range fromyour general interest and knowledge of the field tospecific situational issues. Faculty/staff will interview andrank potential students as to their knowledge, personal/professional ethics and communication skills. Studentsare then offered admission based on their ranking.7. Are all of the programs eligible for financial aid?e Cosmetology program is the only program eligiblefor financial aid. <strong>Esthetics</strong> and Nail Technology programsare not eligible, but alternative loans through companieslisted under step 3 of the application process are offered.8. At the conclusion of the program will I become certified?Provided you have completed your required 1,000 hoursand received a grade of 82 percent or higher, you willreceive a <strong>JCCC</strong> Certificate of Completion. Necessarydocuments are sent to the Kansas State Board ofCosmetology to make you eligible to take the writtenand practical exams.9. What level of commitment will be expected of me? Youwill be expected to attend class/clinic 40 hours per weekfor the full-time program, which are longer hours than isexpected in high school or college, and 20 hours a weekfor the part-time program. You will be challenged tostudy numerous new concepts and accuratelydemonstrate those skills.10. Is job placement assistance available? roughout theprogram, local speakers are invited to share <strong>information</strong>about their salon, their expertise and job opportunities.Additionally, job postings are available onsite. Studentsreceive training in professional protocol, interviewing andrésumé development. Students are always welcome tovisit with counselors to strengthen strategies forsuccessful job hunting11
