Nonny Grace set out on a journey to ensure
her legacy would live on, remembering to
include Children’s Miracle Network in her
estate plan. Twelve years after her death,
her closest friend, Mary Styles, was finally

The Rathgeber Hospitality House recently inducted three new
members to the Board of Directors. The Rathgeber House
is a place for families to stay while they have a loved one
receiving medical care in Wichita Falls. The House relies solely
on donations to serve patients’ families.

Rathgeber Hospitality House
Serving a Family’s Needs
Most often, the Rathgeber Hospitality House offers
lodging to families as they experience an illness or loss. On
occasion, families stay during much happier times, such as
the birth of a new family member. It is not often, however,
that a single family stays during both the worst and best of
times, but that is exactly what Bob and Joyce Bohannon
did earlier this year.
The Bohannon family first stayed at the Rathgeber
House in February, as Bob and Joyce traveled from
Lubbock to be with their oldest son, Danny, who was being
treated at United Regional following a massive heart attack.
Sadly, Danny passed away a few short weeks later,
presenting the second opportunity to serve the Bohannon
family. Out-of-town relatives stayed at the House with
Bob and Joyce as they gathered to say goodbye to their
beloved family member. It was during this stay in March
that the new family room truly fulfilled its potential, as more
than 30 family members met for prayer and a meal the
night before Danny’s service.
In most instances the story would have ended here,
with the Rathgeber staff being grateful to have served a
family during their times of need.
But a grandson’s wedding in
late May brought the
whole family together
again in Wichita Falls.

Miguel’s Story
Celebrating A Very
Small Success!
M
Making his debut at only 31 weeks, Miguel Angel
Rodriquez entered the world way too early and too
small. Weighing in at only 2 lbs. 10 oz., little Miguel
was a fighter from the beginning and pediatrician Terry
Johnson felt strongly that the nursery staff at United
Regional could handle the challenge. He was right.
“He has used every piece of equipment we have
available to us. From the ventilator, to the continuous
positive airway pressure (CPAP) equipment, to a
central line to the beds. He’s used it all,” said Denise
Hobbs, Manager of Nursery. “This has been a great
opportunity for us to show the community how
amazing and capable our team is.”
As this issue of Cornerstone goes to print,
Miguel is home and doing great. Dr. Johnson is very
optimistic about Miguel’s future. “I expect him to be a happy and healthy,
perfectly normal kid,” says Johnson. “I tell parents all the time that you
can’t predict what will happen when a baby is born prematurely. Miguel’s
only issue was his lungs, and that’s something we are very capable of
handling here.”
Hobbs agrees, “This is a great example of why donations to Children’s
Miracle Network are so vital. Our unit is able to have the advanced
equipment that allows us to take care of these special infants.”

Hosts Safety Fair
Fourth Annual
The Bonehead Hotrods
will be raising funds for
Children’s Miracle Network at
their fourth annual Spook-N-
Shine Car Show.
Plan to join in the fun on Saturday,

CHILDREN’S MIRACLE NETWORK
With stuffed bears, crayons and toys everywhere, volunteers
from United Supermarkets, the United Regional Pink Darlings,
and members of the Children’s Miracle Network Development
Committee recently stuffed 1,500 activity packs. Funded
through a grant from The Priddy Foundation, the packs will be
distributed to pediatric patients who visit the United Regional
Emergency Department.
Second Lieutenant Jonathan Sih, along with representatives
from the Aircraft Maintenance Officer Course, presented a
check to Children’s Miracle Network Specialist Suzanne Stone
for $501.60. The airmen solicited donations from their coworkers
to help fund activity packs. The packs are distributed
to pediatric patients receiving services at United Regional. From

Ambassador, Dr. David Flack,
recently announced that four
medical students with ties to
the Wichita Falls area have been
awarded scholarships. The
following students received $4,000
awards from the Future in the
Falls Scholarship Fund at United
Regional Foundation.
• John Randolph Dryden,
son of Edie and Dr. Steve Dryden
of Wichita Falls, is a fourth year
student at the University of Texas
Medical Branch, Galveston, TX.
John was also a scholarship
recipient in 2011.
• Matthew Lee Sullivan, a
third year student at Oklahoma
State University Center for Health
Sciences, Tulsa, OK, is the son
of Sandra and Clay Sullivan of
Owasse, OK.
• Betsy Ann White, daughter

President of the United Regional Foundation Board of

been awarded since the fund was
established in 2009 through grants
from the J. S. Bridwell, Bryant
Edwards and Fain Foundations,
along with individual contributions.
A recent grant from the Dillard
Family Foundation made $15,000
per year available for scholarships
for five years beginning in 2012.
Efforts continue to fully endow
the fund.
The Future in the Falls program
keeps in touch with students in
medical school, residency programs
and fellowships, who have ties to
area communities, to encourage
them to return to Wichita Falls to
begin their medical practices.

As she recalls their trip to Hawaii, their
tour of 24 states, and their friendship that
spanned 26 years, Mary Styles is smiling.
Nonny Arlington Grace and her husband,
Travis, moved to Wichita Falls in the 1970’s
and when Nonny entered the real estate field,
she met Mary.
“She was a city girl and I was a farm
girl. She was from California and she had
experienced so much,” Mary says. After
a childhood spent alone, the death of her
first husband in World War II was followed
by an unhappy second marriage that
ended in divorce. Suddenly Nonny found
herself alone again, caring for her ailing
mother. Then she met Travis Grace. A
pilot stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base,
they soon married and made Wichita Falls
their home. Mary has lived here her entire
life. A mother, teacher and real estate
agent, her path crossed with Nonny’s in a
professional training class. “She was a very
cautious woman. Not easy to get to know,”
Mary says. “I asked her to go to one of
the classes with me, and that’s where the
friendship began.”
That friendship bloomed and they found
themselves doing all sorts of things together,
including becoming volunteers in United
Regional’s Auxiliary. It was during Nonny’s
years of service that she became familiar with
Children’s Miracle Network and it became a
cause that she championed, attending every
telethon and event that she could.
Fast forward 20 years and Nonny found
herself caring for her ailing husband, and
soon after his death, she began her own
battle with Alzheimer’s. Leaning on her
closest friend, she asked Mary to become

the Executrix of her will. Mary accepted
the responsibility, and in 2000, Nonny
passed away.
When the will was read, Mary was
stunned. This would not be a simple
process. In fact, Nonny was quite specific
with her wishes, and following Nonny’s
instructions to the letter, it would take Mary
12 years before she could call her job
complete. “I had no idea it would take this
long. But I’m glad I was able to do this for
her and honor her this way.”
In June of this year, Mary began the final
leg of their last journey together. Checks
were written, and she began hand delivering
them to organizations and people Nonny
wanted to remember. Children’s Miracle
Network was on her list.

produced
from her purse. Nonny Grace planned to
remember. Before Alzheimer’s could cloud
her mind, she set out to ensure that her
legacy was intact and that her memory
would live on. For Children’s Miracle

Network, Nonny’s bequest will help to ensure
that children in our community will have
access to the best equipment and the best
medical care possible. For Mary and Nonny
both, it has been a journey to remember.

Thanks to the contributions of many, $200,000 in additional funds have
been raised for the education center at United Regional. This successful
effort means that amount will be matched by the Dillard Family Foundation.
With an earlier grant of $200,000 from the Dillard Foundation, a
matching grant of $200,000 and the $200,000 in funds raised to qualify for
the matching gift, the total amount needed to fund the construction and
equipment in the education center will be realized.
