PREPOSITIONS IN RELATIVE CLAUSES• When a preposition refers to the relative pronoun, itis usually placed at the end of the clause:He was respected by the people (that) he worked with. This is the room (that) I was born in.Joe’s the person (that) I’m angry with. This is the house (that) I told you about.

• However, in formal language you can place thepreposition before the pronoun. In this case, you usewhom or which (not who or that):He was respected by the people with whom he worked. This is the room in which I was born.• Whom is used in formal language when it is theobject of the relative clause:The ambassador, whom the police is investigating, hasannounced his resignation.
