This year nationalcommittee and a group of experts selected six objects of regional significance and four objects of national importance.One of them is “Tractatus sacerdotalis... Strasbourg (1503)“, a book from the collection of the RareBook Department. At the end of the book three prayers are written by hand – the Lord’s prayer (Our Father),the Hail Mary and the Apostle’s Creed. These are the oldest known texts in Lithuanian language. This uniquemonument of Lithuanian language and written tradition has been declared an object of national importanceand it was entered in the Lithuanian National Register of the UNESCO programme “Memory of the World”.A handwritten book “Liber Extraordinarius Provincialis“ (Register of examinations in the Lithuanian JesuitProvince), which belongs to the Manuscript Department collection, was also entered in the register. Thisunique document is the oldest handwritten monument of this kind in Lithuania. The book contains register ofstudents who were examined in various subjects at colleges in the Jesuit Province of Lithuania (for the mostpart in Vilnius, although there is some information from Nesvyžius (Nieśwież), Braunsberg and other places)from the end of the sixteenth to the first half of the seventeenth century. This unique historical source, whichreveals history not only of Vilnius University, but also of the education and science in the Grand Duchy ofLithuania, presents original system of examination, assessment, assignment of grades implemented by theJesuits. The book provides information on a large number of eminent Lithuanian personalities such as theprogenitor of Lithuanian written tradition, lexicographer Konstantinas Sirvydas, poet, alumnus and later professorof Vilnius University Motiejus Sarbievijus, the only alumnus of VU who became a saint Andrius Bobola,the first Lithuanian missionary, who spread Christianity in China Andrius Rudamina, an active worker in theLithuanian written tradition, educator Jonas Jaknavičius, professor of Vilnius University, theologian, philosopher,one of the leading pioneers of Lithuanian musicology Žygimantas Liauksminas and many others.
