There are really countlesstypes <strong>of</strong> nonstructural systems and components and it would be impractical to developa performance prediction methodology that explicitly considered all the componentsthat exist in any one building let alone the entire inventory <strong>of</strong> buildings that must beaddressed. However, it should be possible to identify certain components and systemsthat that have particularly important and significant consequences with regard to lifeloss or serious injury, repair costs and downtime and categorize them into severalbroad group which have similar performance characteristics and engineering demandparameters. Similarly it should be possible to identify components which have alesser impact and to similarly categorize them.131
