• Purbeck is home to one of the South West of 

England’s most unspoiled coastal and rural 

landscapes and yet is within easy reach of 

London and the Midlands, perfect for year-round 

holidays and short breaks. 

• Purbeck is a walker’s paradise; there is a myriad 

of walking trails which take you through the 

area’s stunning countryside and coastline. The 

South West Coast Path takes its course along the 

whole coastline in the district. 

• The eastern end of England’s only UNESCO 

natural World Heritage Site is in Purbeck. Known 

as the Jurassic Coast, the area is recognised for 

its unique geology. The Heritage Centres at 

Lulworth Cove and Durlston Country Park, a 

National Nature Reserve, give a revealing insight 

into a world of dinosaurs and fossils. 

• With sandy beaches such as Studland Beach 

and Swanage Bay and coves such as Lulworth 

and Kimmeridge, it’s a perfect place for the 

whole family to enjoy the mild climate. 

• Purbeck has a wealth of family attractions; 

Monkey World and The Tank Museum are world- 

famous, Enid Blyton fans will recognise many of 

the real-life locations which inspired her novels 

and the farm parks at Farmer Palmer’s and 

Putlake Adventure Farm give children the 

chance to get close to animals.

• Swanage is a Victorian seaside resort and has a 

unique place in the quarrying history of the 

country; travel into the town by the famous 

Steam Railway. 

• Wareham offers a traditional Dorset market 

town; markets are held on Thursdays and 

Saturdays and the fortnightly farmers’ market 

allows you to enjoy the fantastic local food. 

• TE Lawrence was one of the area’s most famous 

residents. Lawrence of Arabia, as he became 

known, lived near Wareham; his home Cloud’s 

Hill is preserved by the National Trust and his 

grave can be seen at Moreton Cemetery, close 

to the delightful gardens and tea shop in the 

village. 

• Exploring the heathlands and forests, the RSPB 

Reserve at Arne, Studland Nature Reserve and 

the Blue Pool offers the chance to get close to 

the district’s exceptional wildlife. 

• Taking a boat trip to Brownsea Island is an 

ideal day out and perfect place to have a picnic. 

The Island was where the first Boy Scout camp 

was run by Lord Baden Powell; currently 

managed by the National Trust, the island is one 

of the few places in England where you can spot 

a red squirrel! 

• Purbeck’s rich heritage is highlighted by Corfe 

Castle, the iconic ruin which is a vestige of the 

Civil War and the imposing Lulworth Castle set 

in extensive parklands.

The Purbeck coast is truly something special and has something on offer for 

everyone, whether you want to spend your time relaxing on the soft sand beaches, 

exploring the coast path or hunting for fossils and walking in the footsteps of 

dinosaurs. 

Jurassic Coast 

Most of Purbeck lies within an Area of Outstanding 

Natural Beauty as well as being part of England’s 

only natural World Heritage Site, designated for its 

outstanding geological interest. Walk along the 

coast to see the unique rock formations such as 

Durdle Door and hunt for fossils on the beach! 

The Coast Path 

The South West Coast Path follows the whole of our 

coastline starting at Shell Bay. For 27 miles you can 

experience the glorious sandy beaches, dramatic 

cliff tops, incredible rock formations, spectacular 

geological features and hidden coves that make up 

the Purbeck coastline. 

Wildlife 

Whilst enjoying the coast keep your eyes peeled for 

the wide array of wildlife that calls Purbeck its 

home, from birds including puffins, razorbills and 

guillemots, to sealife including dolphins and 

porpoises and beautiful plant life including early 

spider, flowering bee and pyramidal orchids.

Beaches Galore! 

If you are looking to spend a day by the sea, 

Purbeck has an array of beaches to suit everyone, 

from safe family beaches to remote bays. The sea 

along the Purbeck coast is generally calm, making 

it a safe place for children to play and ideal for 

long leisurely swims. The beach at Swanage meets 

the stringent criteria to achieve Blue Flag status. 

For underwater wildlife, head to the rocky shores of 

Kimmeridge for excellent rockpooling and 

snorkelling. 

The golden sands of Studland Beach and Shell Bay 

offer a glorious slice of natural coastline in Purbeck 

featuring a four-mile stretch of golden, sandy beach 

with views of Old Harry Rocks. The heathland 

behind the beach is a haven for native wildlife; 

designated trails through the sand dunes and 

woodlands allow for exploration and spotting of 

deer, insects and bird life as well as a wealth of wild 

flowers.

Charming Swanage

Swanage has so much for the whole family to enjoy: the town has kept much of its 

original Victorian character and offers an award-winning beach with safe bathing 

together with a wide variety of all-weather leisure activities. 

A Beautiful Beach 

The town's jewel in the crown is its family friendly 

beach. Sandy and gently sloping, Swanage has the 

only beach along the Jurassic Coast to consistently 

achieve European Blue Flag Status. Swanage enjoys 

some of the south coast’s best weather; listen to the 

sea lapping at the shore as you lie on the golden 

sand or stroll along the promenade. 

Victorian Charm 

Swanage retains the feel of its original incarnation 

as a Victorian seaside resort. Much of the 

architecture is from this era – have a look along the 

High Street at impressive buildings such as the Town 

Hall and the Purbeck House Hotel. As you wander 

around the art galleries and boutique gift shops, the 

pace of life slows to a gentler rhythm in Swanage. 

Attractions 

Among the town’s main attractions are Swanage 

Railway and Durlston Country Park. The Railway, 

which uses steam engines on many of its routes, 

has a year-round timetable and is the best way to 

travel between Corfe Castle and Swanage. The 

various stops along the way are also perfect dropoff 

points for a day’s walking.

Entertainment for Everyone 

Swanage has a wide range of events throughout the 

year which will appeal to everyone. For music lovers, 

the town has a fantastic range of festivals which 

everyone can enjoy, including Blues, Jazz and Folk 

Festivals. The Regatta and Carnival Week offers a 

lively atmosphere a Caribbean style carnival, 

spectacular fireworks, music and dancing to suit 

everyone. All year round, you will find something to 

do both in the daytime and in the evening. The 

Mowlem Theatre presents a varied programme of 

brand new film releases, shows and theatrical plays 

and has incredible views overlooking the bay. The 

town also has a variety of top quality restaurants and 

bistros for you to sample while you’re here. Or why 

not just sit on the beach eating traditional fish and 

chips? 

Durlston Country Park 

Durlston Country Park was founded by the Victorian 

entrepreneur and philanthropist George Burt. The 

park is a fantastic site of around 260 acres where 

you can enjoy stunning views and see an 

abundance of natural beauty, flora and fauna as 

well as magnificent marine mammals and birds, all 

set in “nature’s great open book”. The park hosts a 

wide range of events throughout the year including 

dolphin watches and is the perfect place to enjoy a 

spectacular cliff top walk. The Park was the first 

National Nature Reserve to be designated by the 

recently-formed Natural England and was recently 

voted Britain's 2nd Favourite Park.

Away from the beaches, one of our visitors’ favourite things to do is exploring 

the picturesque towns and villages of Purbeck; here are just a few to whet your 

appetite: 

Bere Regis 

The village features St John the Baptist church 

which has a history dating back 1000 years - tours 

given by church members are available between 

May and September. Next to the Bere Stream, 

Elder Road Open Space can be found with its new 

riverside boardwalk and bridge. Visit Pampered Pigs 

farm shop to discover local food. 

Corfe Castle 

As well as the iconic Castle ruins, the village is known 

for being one of the prettiest in Dorset with most of 

the houses built from the local Purbeck stone. Visit 

the Model Village and see what the village would 

have looked like before Cromwell’s army arrived. 

Moreton 

Known best for its links with TE Lawrence who is 

buried in the village cemetery, the village also boasts 

gardens and the beautiful etched glass windows of 

St Nicholas’ Church. The Jubilee Trail, Lawrence 

Trail and Lawrence Cycle Ride all pass through 

Moreton taking in the ford through the River Frome. 

Worth Matravers 

Perfectly located if you are doing a coastal walk, you 

can have a breather either at the famous Square and 

Compass pub, visiting the fossil museum next door or 

have a picnic near the delightful village pond. 

Saturday market, Wareham Quay 

River Frome, Moreton 

Wareham 

This attractive town lies on a low ridge between the 

rivers Frome and Piddle, and was formerly a former 

major port where ships arrived from all over the 

world. Today the Quay remains lively with pubs and 

restaurants around the square. From here you can 

take a boat trip or hire your own or if you want to 

relax, simply sit on the quayside, feeding the ducks. 

Both the River Frome and the River Piddle can be 

enjoyed by taking a waymarked circular riverside 

walk; along the way, don’t miss the tranquil Priory 

Meadow which has been restored into a conservation 

area where you can enjoy the wildlife habitat. 

The town has been a market town for over 500 

years and its market has the accolade of two royal 

charters; still today, regular farmers and general 

markets are held in the town on Thursday and 

Saturday, maintaining its reputation as a lively 

market town. 

Discover Wareham's history by following the Walls 

Walk which takes you round the town walls 

originally built in Saxon times and the Town Walk 

which includes highlights such as the site of 

Wareham Castle and Wareham Museum. 

To the north of Wareham is Wareham Forest. There 

is free parking from which you can ramble through 

heathland and forest, watch wildlife, have a picnic 

and follow trails on foot or by bike. The Northport 

Greenway offers a safe walking and cycling route 

from the quayside in town to the Forest.

It is undisputable that Purbeck is home to an exceptionally beautiful and varied 

landscape; the area around Wareham for example, has been recognised as the 

most botanically rich in the UK. 

Brownsea Island 

For something a little different why not visit 

Brownsea Island, the largest island in Poole 

Harbour. The Island, a location for BBC's Autumn 

Watch, is rich in wildlife and provides a home to 

red squirrels, sika deer and a great variety of bird 

life. The Island was the birthplace of the scout 

movement in 1907 when Robert Baden Powell held 

an experimental camp there. 

Purbecks Grasslands, 

Downlands and Meadows 

The Purbeck Coast, Ridge, Lulworth Ranges and 

Corfe Common are all important grassland sites. 

There are a number of footpaths which will allow 

you to explore and enjoy butterflies like the 

Lulworth Skipper and Adonis Blue as they dance 

among the wild flowers. 

Heathland 

This unique habitat lies at the heart of Purbeck. 

Studland Heath and Hartland Moor are both 

heathland National Nature Reserves where you can 

see some of Purbeck’s rare heathland plants and 

animals. Take a leisurely walk and keep your eyes 

peeled for Sand Lizards basking in the sun and 

listen for the rare Dartford Warbler singing its song. 

If you visit the RSPB Arne Nature Reserve, you may 

be lucky enough to spot an osprey.

Sandy Bays and Rocky Shores 

The exciting variety of marine wildlife can be 

observed either above or below the water. Boat trips 

and cliff walks provide you with the opportunity to 

view the great limestone cliffs which are inhabited 

by breeding puffins, guillemots and peregrine 

falcons; they also provide the opportunity to spot 

dolphins. 

If you prefer to be in the water, why not try 

snorkelling at the rocky limestone reefs that are 

found at Durlston, St Aldhelm’s Head and 

Kimmeridge. You will also find that Swanage Pier is 

a hive of marine activity and will be able to spot 

fish such as the Tompot Blenny. 

Rivers and Wetlands 

The Frome and Piddle rivers flow through Purbeck 

into Poole Harbour, one of the largest natural 

harbours in the world. Walks around these rivers 

provide exceptional views over saltmarsh and 

reedbeds and the chance to spot otters, water voles 

and birds such as redshank, lapwing and black 

tailed godwit.

Purbeck has a rich heritage, from haunted castles, to a deserted village and tales of 

great adventurers, you’ll uncover the mysteries as you delve deeper into Purbeck’s 

past. 

Corfe Castle 

The unmistakable silhouette of Corfe Castle towers 

dramatically above its picturesque village at the 

very heart of Purbeck. The castle was built in 1086 

and was one of the country’s great strongholds 

until betrayal from within led to its downfall. The 

castle was also the inspiration for Enid Blyton’s 

Kirrin Castle in the Famous Five adventure ‘Five on 

a Treasure Island’ and now you can discover more 

of the author's favourite places in Purbeck by using 

our Enid Blyton Country leaflet available from 

Purbeck Information Centre. 

Lulworth Estate 

Lulworth Castle sits within its own grounds in the 

Lulworth Estate. Built in the early 17th Century as a 

hunting lodge, the exterior of the Castle has changed 

little over the years. The Chapel of St Mary’s in the 

grounds of the castle is reputed to be one of the finest 

pieces of architecture in the county of Dorset. 

The estate also boasts some of the most dramatic 

features in Purbeck; Durdle Door with its magnificent 

arch and Lulworth Cove with its perfectly rounded 

bay.

Tyneham 

Tyneham 

The village time forgot. Evacuated in December 

1943 for military training during the second world 

war, the village has been deserted ever since, but 

many of the buildings survive and the Church (still 

used for occasional services) and School now house 

excellent exhibitions about the village and villagers. 

A good starting point for walks, especially on the 

coast path, but do not stray from the marked paths. 

Wartime past 

Purbeck can be proud of its active involvement in 

the country’s wartime periods. Visit in June and be 

part of the British Armed Forces and Veterans 

Weekend in Swanage. You can follow the Dorset 

Military Trail including the Tank Museum at 

Bovington. 

Lawrence of Arabia 

At Clouds Hill, just outside of Bovington is the small 

cottage which belonged to Lawrence of Arabia 

(T.E.Lawrence). He bought this tiny isolated brick 

and tile cottage in 1925 and a permanent 

exhibition now details Lawrence’s extraordinary life. 

From here you can join a seven mile trail which 

takes you to where he worked, died and is now 

buried. Pick up the Lawrence Trail leaflets from 

Purbeck or Swanage Tourist Information Centres.

explore by foot or by bike. 

Walking 

Waymarked rambles, guided walks, self-guided 

trails or purely wandering around – whatever you 

want from your walk, we’ve got it. Pick up one of 

our great leaflets and discover the Wareham Two 

Rivers Walks, the Purbeck Way (including the West 

route), the Wareham Forest Way, the South West

popular walks in Purbeck, the Lawrence of Arabia

Cycling 

Bring your own bike or hire one when you're here - 

don't miss the opportunity to discover Purbeck by 

pedal power! We have a number of cycle route 

leaflets covering a variety of distances and abilities, 

including the waymarked Sika Cycle Trail at 

Wareham Forest and family friendly routes in the 

Studland and Rempstone areas. 

Buses 

There are regular bus services throughout the area. 

Visit Purbeck or Swanage Information Centres for 

timetables, routes and discount tickets; alternatively 

visit the Traveline website www.traveline.org.uk. 

Kayaking on the River Frome 

Swanage steam train 

The fantastic CoastlinX53 Jurassic Coast Bus 

travels daily from Exeter near the start of the World 

Heritage Site along parts of this incredible coastline 

and on to Poole. These buses are full of 

information and interpretation about the World 

Heritage Site and allow you to hop on and off as 

you please. A link bus between Swanage and 

Wareham has also been provided, ensuring you can 

easily visit the site from the resort. The bus also 

calls into Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. 

Railways 

Purbeck is well served by the national train network 

with direct access to London, so it's perfectly 

possible to leave your car at home. Once you're 

here Swanage Railway gives the perfect opportunity 

to discover Purbeck as it was done in years gone by. 

Park your car at Norden Park & Ride and travel by 

steam train to Corfe Castle, Harman's Cross or the 

Victorian Resort of Swanage. Regular events are 

held by the Railway throughout the year, 

culminating in the Santa Specials in December – 

perfect for kids of all ages! 

Boats 

Various boat trip operators offer tours along the 

coastline and the River Frome, some specialise in 

wildlife trips where you can marvel at Purbeck’s 

natural beauty. Alternatively you can skipper your 

own vessel from Wareham, Swanage, Studland, 

Shell Bay and Lulworth Cove.

Swanage and Purbeck lies on the south-eastern coast of Dorset, a quintessentially 

English county. After visiting the wide open spaces of Dorset, you will return home 

refreshed and reinvigorated! 


The county boasts coastal resorts with safe, sandy 

beaches, a uniquely unspoiled coastline, breathtaking 

country landscapes, traditional market towns 

and thatched cottage villages. The mild climate also 

serves gardens well and many of the manor homes, 

for which Dorset is famed, have magnificent 

gardens. Panoramic views of the Dorset landscapes 

are best enjoyed from atop one of the many ancient 

pre-historic hillforts and barrows. 

Christchurch 

On the east of the county, the Priory town of 

Christchurch has a long, rich heritage and is where 

the two great rivers of the Avon and the Stour meet 

after their long traverse through the south west. 

Christchurch is also a beach resort and the 

picturesque harbour of Mudeford is still the focal 

point for the local fishing industry. A few minutes’ 

away, Hurn is the focus of a wealth of attractions 

for all the family. 

West Dorset 

The Jurassic Coast’s rich bounty of fossils can be 

easily explored at Lyme Regis and Charmouth and 

the natural phenomenon of Chesil Beach is not to 

be missed, particularly in the spring when it offers 

sanctuary to hundreds of swans hatching at 

Abbotsbury. The county town of Dorchester is 

Lyme Regis, West Dorset 

Wimborne, East Dorset 

synonymous with Thomas Hardy, perhaps Dorset’s 

most famous son; the largest collection of Hardy’s 

artefacts in the world are in the County Museum 

here. On the northern borders of Dorset, lies 

Sherborne with its famous Abbey and Castle built 

by Sir Walter Raleigh. 

East Dorset 

This is one of Dorset’s most rural areas, with rolling 

countryside and endless green fields. The market 

town of Wimborne Minster is home to one of 

England’s very few ancient chained libraries where 

some of earliest printed books can be seen. 

Blandford Forum is one of England’s best preserved 

Georgian towns and still retains its elegant 

character. The hill top town of Shaftesbury is best 

known for Gold Hill, a steep cobbled street lined by 

thatched cottages. 

Weymouth & Portland 

This resort is a mecca for those wanting to enjoy 

the coastal life. The rugged coastline of Portland 

down to the famous Portland Bill contrasts with the 

safe, shallow waters at Weymouth Beach, easily 

accessible from the town, and the traditional leisure 

harbour where the day’s catch is delivered by local 

trawlers. Hosts of the sailing events of the London 

2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the area 

offers exceptional watersports for all.

producers who supply a range of items from 

the Purbeck countryside. This group runs 

markets regularly; it’s a great opportunity 

to meet the people who actually produce 

the food and find out what is special about 

their products. 

Local seafood 

Why not visit us in October during Dorset Food Week, a 

celebration of all things mouthwateringly, irresistibly Dorset? 

The event includes courses, demonstrations and special 

menus across the whole county. 

It's not just local food that you can enjoy; 

the area is home to many artists and 

craftspeople. Their wares are sold at 

the many boutiques, galleries and shops 

around Purbeck; the Boilerhouse Gallery 

in Corfe Castle or the Creative Gallery 

in Wareham are just two examples of 

galleries featuring local artists' work. If 

you want to learn a local craft, why not 

take a course at the Burngate Stone

Take a giant trip of nostalgia into the days of yesteryear at this renowned annual 

extravaganza, widely recognised as the leading event of it’s type in the World. 

Held on one of the largest outdoor showgrounds in Europe at a mammoth 

600 acres, see an old time steam driven funfair, the world famous line-up of 

showman’s engines and the magnificent steam powered heavy haulage, threshing, 

woodsawing, ploughing and road rolling demonstrations. 

Over 200 full size working steam engines including 50 showmans type with 

their twisted, gleaming brass. 

Also featured are traditional “can can” girl dancing shows, fairground organs, 

heavy horses, rural crafts, vintage tractors, stationary engines, old commercial 

and army vehicles, vintage cars and motorcycles, models, trade stands, auto 

jumble and five huge entertainment pavilions with live music. In all we have 

2000 exhibits plus 800 trade stands. 

It’s not all old time! 

For our younger clientele take a white knuckle ride on one of the Country’s 

biggest travelling modern funfairs. Rides include a “120ft Giant Wheel”, a “Log 

Flume”, a “Roller Coaster”, a “Drop Tower” and the “Shock Wave Ejection Seat 

Reverse Bungee”.
