Shebegan her career as an analyst at the Analysis and Forecasting Centre of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She joined McKinsey in 1986as a consultant, later becoming a project manager. In 1991, she was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Éditions Harlequin, a subsidiaryof Éditions Hachette and Canadian publisher Torstar. In 1996, she joined Anglo-Dutch group Reed Elsevier where she headed their Frenchscientific and medical publishing subsidiary until 2001, when she joined the Vivendi Group as head of Éditions Nathan. Catherine Lucet isnow a member of the Executive Committee of Editis, Chief Executive Officer of its Education and Reference division which includes ÉditionsNathan, Bordas, Clé and Retz and Dictionnaires Le Robert, and Chairman of Éditions Nathan.
