CLOTHING INDUSTRYPRODUCTIONTextiles and cloth<strong>in</strong>g are among the most important sectors of the Turkish economy andforeign trade. Account<strong>in</strong>g for about 7% of the GDP together, these two sectors are thecore of Turkish economy <strong>in</strong> terms of GDP contribution, share <strong>in</strong> manufactur<strong>in</strong>g,employment, <strong>in</strong>vestments and macroeconomic <strong>in</strong>dicators. These sectors had a 18,3%share <strong>in</strong> total export volume <strong>in</strong> 2013. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to Social Security Institution statistics,there are more than 52,000 textile and cloth<strong>in</strong>g companies <strong>in</strong> <strong>Turkey</strong> with more than918,000 employees.<strong>Turkey</strong> is one of the ma<strong>in</strong> actors <strong>in</strong> the world cloth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry. <strong>Turkey</strong> ranks 8 th <strong>in</strong> worldcotton production and 4 th <strong>in</strong> world cotton consumption. <strong>Turkey</strong> also ranks 3 rd <strong>in</strong> organiccotton production after India and Syria. The Turkish cloth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry with a share of 3,4%is the 7 th largest supplier <strong>in</strong> the world, and the 3 rd largest supplier to the EU. It has a shareof 4% <strong>in</strong> knitted cloth<strong>in</strong>g exports and it ranks 5 th among the export<strong>in</strong>g countries. With ashare of 2,8%, <strong>Turkey</strong> ranks 9 th among the woven cloth<strong>in</strong>g exporters <strong>in</strong> the world. TheTurkish textile <strong>in</strong>dustry, which is listed <strong>in</strong> the world’s top ten exporters, is the 2 nd largestsupplier to the EU.In more than 30 years from 1980 to 2013, the production and export of the <strong>in</strong>dustry shiftedfrom low value added commodities to high value added manufactured items andfashionable goods. With its qualified and educated human resources, design capacity,accumulation of know-how, <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> technology, dynamic and flexible productioncapacity, advanced sub <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>in</strong> cloth<strong>in</strong>g sector, concern about quality, health andenvironment; the Turkish textile and cloth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry has a significant role <strong>in</strong> world tradewith the capability to meet high standards, and can compete <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational markets <strong>in</strong>terms of high quality and a wide range of products.Istanbul: City of FashionIstanbul is proud of its designers, fashion and shopp<strong>in</strong>g centers where it has kept itsunique Occidental-Oriental, old-meets-new, and East-meets-West characteristics. Istanbulis becom<strong>in</strong>g a lead<strong>in</strong>g fashion and shopp<strong>in</strong>g center due to both foreign and local<strong>in</strong>vestments recently. The world’s largest shopp<strong>in</strong>g centers are open<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Istanbul. Manytourists have added Istanbul to their it<strong>in</strong>erary for shopp<strong>in</strong>g. As a global sourc<strong>in</strong>g hub forboth Asia and Europe, Istanbul attracts a number of <strong>in</strong>ternational buy<strong>in</strong>g offices, trad<strong>in</strong>ghouses, major retailers and department stores. Istanbul Fashion Week is organized twicea year to ga<strong>in</strong> recognition for Turkish designers and brands <strong>in</strong> national and <strong>in</strong>ternationaltribunes where they present their latest collections. S<strong>in</strong>ce Istanbul is becom<strong>in</strong>g a fashionand shopp<strong>in</strong>g center, most of the companies have shifted their production facilities to the<strong>in</strong>ner prov<strong>in</strong>ces. Agreement on Textiles and <strong>Cloth<strong>in</strong>g</strong> (ATC). The sector cont<strong>in</strong>ues to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> and enhanceits competitiveness.In 2013 the total value of cloth<strong>in</strong>g exports was US$ 15 billion. The sector exports about65% of its production. Approximately 80% of the cloth<strong>in</strong>g exported is cotton cloth<strong>in</strong>g.Knitted cloth<strong>in</strong>g and accessories, with an export value of US$ 9.3 billion, had a share of61,8% <strong>in</strong> total cloth<strong>in</strong>g exports, and woven cloth<strong>in</strong>g had a share of 38,2% with a value ofUS$ 5.7 billion <strong>in</strong> 2013.T-shirts and pullovers are the most important export products <strong>in</strong> knitted cloth<strong>in</strong>g sector.Exports of t-shirts and pullovers were US$ 3.3 billion and US$ 1.6 billion respectively <strong>in</strong>2013. In 2013 <strong>Turkey</strong> exportedcloth<strong>in</strong>g of US$ 11.4 billion to the EU, which was equivalent to 76,2% of <strong>Turkey</strong>’s totalcloth<strong>in</strong>g exports. In 2013, Turkish companies exported to more than 180countries <strong>in</strong> the world.TRADE FAIRS IN TURKEYMany Turkish cloth<strong>in</strong>g companies have expanded their market<strong>in</strong>g and distributionchannels <strong>in</strong> global markets by open<strong>in</strong>g stores and cha<strong>in</strong> stores all over the world. To<strong>in</strong>crease awareness of Turkish fashion <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational markets, they participate <strong>in</strong> manyfashion shows and <strong>in</strong>ternational fairs on abroad.
