THE POWER OF TEAMSWhy Teams? The work of anorganisation is often toocomplex to be carriedout by one person or bya group of people eachworking alone. Aneffective team is greaterthan the sum of its partsand offers severaladvantages.• It brings the differentknowledge, skills and abilities of the team members together. Each member can bring different insights, perspectives andsuggestions. This can be a significant advantage whenproblem solving or decision making.• Members can feel more empowered in a team setting. If theteam culture is right they can be more creative and feel freeto put ideas and suggestions on the table for discussion.• Each member has the opportunity to learn from the others. Agood team offers the opportunity for ongoing personaldevelopment.• An individual may fear failure and so not make a certaindecision or take a necessary action. In a team setting, failure(and success) is shared by all members. Any failure is morelikely to be seen as a learning experience.• A team is said to bring synergy. This means that theperformance of the team is greater than the sum of all theseparate individual performances. What is a Team?Obviously a random group of people is not necessarily a team. Ateam is often defined as a group of people working towards acommon goal. The characteristics of a team include a high levelof interdependence between the members and commitment tothe shared goal. Of course, teams are very familiar in the worldof sport. The idea that the individual players must cooperatewith each other in order to compete seems obvious. It may notbe so obvious that teamwork is also required in businessorganisations. The goals of the organisation cannot beaccomplished by individuals working alone.Teams Come in Many TypesAn international Colgate team withmembers from Ireland, England, USA,Mexico, Poland & Switzerland.Several different types of team are used by organisations tomeet the needs of various situations.• Teams may be permanent or temporary. The latter type ofteam is set up to accomplish a single task and thendisbanded. Such a team is often called a project team, taskforce or a working party. For example, a task force might beset up to plan and manage the move to a new building. Sucha project might last for two years or more.• Team members are often drawn from a number of differentfunctions. Such teams are known as cross-functional teams. For example, if the task is to design a new product, a teammight be set up with members from the marketing, manufacturing and IT functions. We will now look at the way Colgate Palmolive uses teams in ahighly innovative way.Team Structure in ColgateColgate is a global company, operating in over 200 countries. Many staff, although located in these different countries, work insimilar functions, for example, marketing, manufacturing or IT.They are specialists in their area and are known in Colgate asin-country experts. Since they work in similar functions, they arelikely to come across similar problems and issues in their day today work. Clearly, it is of great benefit to pool their experiencesand share this knowledge. The teams are called businessnetworks.Global businesses are heavily dependent on IT services andColgate is no exception. All Colgate staff require on-going dailysupport for the various IT services they use. Accordingly, thecompany provides its global support organisation (the GSSO)which consolidates support expertise into one organisation.Since similar problems frequently arise in different locations, this consolidation results in quicker problem solving and moreefficient and effective overall performance.Project TeamsProjects are an everyday occurrence in Colgate and range fromsmall local projects to global projects involving staff from regionssuch as Europe, Africa, the Americas, and Asia Pacific. Thesecross-functional, international project teams can involve peoplefrom very different lines of business such as pet food and oralcare. While manufacturing plants receive the benefit of combinedand focused expertise in solving problems and developing newprocesses, individuals receive valuable experience and personaldevelopment. The Global Team ChallengeClearly, there are many challenges associated with global teamsincluding distance and different time zones, language andculture. For example, while working on various projects, an Irishteam member has spent months in places such as the US, theCzech Republic and Poland. Although such travel is sometimesunavoidable, much team work is done remotely using tools suchas teleconferencing and video conferencing. Another powerfultool is the e-meeting where a person can share the screen whilemaking a presentation and hand control over to other remoteviewers when necessary. In addition, the company also uses anapproach called e-teamrooms which are places where files canbe accessed and shared by global team members. Electronictools such as these are highly effective because they enablecost effective long distance communication. The Whole Organisation is a TeamThe goal of all businesses is sustainable and profitable growth.Since all employees are working to achieve this, they are allmembers of one global team. However, this is only true whenpeople across the companyshare team values and feelcommitted to a team culture.Accordingly, Colgate managerscontinually:• Encourage people to worktogether as a team toachieve goals.• Recognise and celebrateteam successes. Therecognition of achievementis a powerful motivator.• Anticipate and facilitate resolution of conflict. It isinevitable that disagreement will arise in any team andteam players must develop the skills to dealeffectively with this.• Facilitate a sense of belonging to the organisationthrough the core Colgate values of Caring, GlobalTeamwork and Continuous Improvement.By these means Colgate ensures that ideas, technologies andtalents are shared throughout the organisation on a daily basis.Your TaskThese days most employers attempt to verify that a job applicanthas the ability to work in a team. Research shows that this abilityis often valued more highly than other characteristics. Thismeans that interviewers will look for good social andcommunication skills such as:• Active Listening • Problem Analysis • Conflict Resolution• Collaborating with Others • Work PlanningFor each of these areas list an occasion in which you feel youhave used the particular skill.
