Conducting an InterviewIntroductionAfter planning and opening the interview, be sure you've structured it to getthe right information and ask the right questions.GuidelinesTo conduct an interview, follow these guidelines:GuidelineExplanationStarting off Start off on the right foot. Remember, you never get asecond chance to make a first impression.Taking notesAdapting torespondent'slevel ofunderstandingListeningProbingAvoiding HaloEffectWork from an outline of key points or questions. Don't--x Read from documents.x Interrupt interview to search through papers.Tell the respondent you'll be taking notes, and he usuallywon't object. He may object if you take notes withoutmentioning it first, especially on a sensitive subject.Caution: Some folks get nervous if they see you takingnotes on sensitive remarks. In this case, defer takingthese notes until later in the interview, when discussing aless serious topic.Take enough notes to jog memory later. Don't relysolely on memory or take too many notes.Adapt your speech to the respondent's level ofunderstanding. Don't--x Use patronizing remarks.x Overwhelm person with jargon.Be patient and allow the respondent to clarify remarks ordevelop points.
