Eliminating WordinessIntroduction Using the active voice improves writing quality. However, if writing containsunnecessary, pretentious, or long words, it will still be hard to read.Remember, the longer it takes to say it, the weaker it comes across.WordyexpressionsThis section identifies types of wordy expressions and ways to eliminate them:• Deadwood.• Dummy subjects.• Doubled expressions.• Needless repetition.• Overuse of the, that, or which.• Nouns as modifiers.DeadwoodA well-chosen word is worth a thousand pictures. However, some peoplechoose words to impress, rather than to express. Big words andpretentious phrases add deadwood (i.e. overly wordy) that hindersmeaning.Most wordy expressions have much shorter common synonyms far easier toread, write, say, and hear.
