Page Two—October 10, 2010Saint Anthony Catholic ChurchScripture Reflections for the29th Sunday in Ordinary TimeLIVINGtheWORDSunday, Oct. 17, 2010THE REWARDS OF PERSISTENCETo persist is to stand firm, to stick with it, not giving inwhen “common sense” would suggest otherwise. Jesustells a tale of a persistent widow that would both get alaugh and make a point. A powerless widow is able tochange a corrupt judge through her persistence. Mosesand Paul also weigh in on persistence.• FIRST READINGAs long as Moses kept his hands raised up, Israel had thebetter of the fight (Exodus 17:8-13).Next Sunday, we hear a series of readings on theimportance of prayer. This reading speaks of Moses whomakes intercession for his people. The Israelites go intobattle, and as long as Moses holds his hands up, theIsraelites are successful. When he lets his hands fall, theAmalekites were successful. Toward the end we hear thatAaron and Hur assist Moses to hold up his hands. Thispart of the story could provide us with insight intoprayer: that we should ask others to pray with us. Prayeris an act of trust and love, and asking others to pray withand for us is likewise an act of trust and love.• SECOND READINGOne who belongs to God may be competent, equippedfor every good work (2 Timothy 3:14—4:2).The two sources of our faith are Sacred Scripture andTradition. This passages closes with an exhortation, topreach the word of God, whether it is convenient orinconvenient, easy or difficult. Everything that happensto us should be one more opportunity for us to shareGod’s love.• GOSPELGod will secure the rights of his chosen ones who call outto Him (Luke 18:1-8).Jesus speaks of a widow who demands her rights from anevil judge. (It is very odd that he would speak of an eviljudge, for that is the person in the parable whosymbolizes God the Father). At first the judge does notgive her what she wants, but she insists until he finallygives in to her requests. This means we must ask forthose things that we truly need from God. If we do notreceive them immediately, we should continue to ask.Do we change God’s mind when we pray? A better wayof describing the power of our prayer is that God trustsus so much that he invites us to join him in the decisionmakingprocess. It is not that God decides everythingthat we do. It is a union of the two (for God has calledus to be his friends who assist him in his work ofrecreating this world in his image).• REFLECTIONDuring the last two weeks we have heard about faith: thedisciples requesting an increase of faith. Jesus sayingeven a little will do, the Syrian general and Samaritanleper whose faith delivers them. Jesus asks: “When theSon of Man comes, will he find faith on earth? (Luke 18:8)This question seems to hang in mid-air, but not if werelate it to what Jesus has just said about persisting inprayer. Persistence in prayer lies at the heart of theparable of the widow and the unjust judge. This parablemust have gotten a laugh. Widows and orphans wereamong the most powerless people in society in thosedays. That’s why the prophets were always taking uptheir cause. But here you have a judge who neither fearsGod nor respects anybody else cowering before a widowwho won’t go away. He even goes so far as to say that hisonly reason for deciding in her favor was the fear thatshe would give him a black eye, a more accuratetranslation of “come and strike me” (18:5). Moses is alsoshown persisting in prayer with the help of Aaron andHur, so that the Israelite people will have access to landfor their flocks and water for humans and beasts. AndPaul urges Timothy to be persistent in learning andpreaching from the scriptures, which would mean the OldTestament, since the New Testament was a work inprogress. Will the Son of Man find faith? He will, if wepersist both in prayer and learning the word of God.Mon., Oct. 11thGal 4:22-24, 26-27, 31-5:1Lk 11:29-32Tues., Oct. 12thGal 5:1-6Lk 11:37-41READINGS FOR THE WEEKWed., Oct. 13thGal 5:18-25Lk 11:42-46Thurs., Oct. 14thEph 1:1-10Lk 11:47-54Fri., Oct. 15thEph 1:11-14Lk 12:1-7

Twenty Eighth Sunday In Ordinary TimeOctober 10, 2010—Page ElevenSAINT THERESE WAS RAISED BYTWO SAINTLY PARENTS WITH ADiocese of JolietPatron Saint of theYear of the EucharistOfficial BiographySt. Therese of Lisieux1873-1897STRONG FAITH, BLESSED LOUISAND ZELIE MARTIN. This faithled all of the Martin girls intothe Carmelite order andproduced one of the greatestsaints of modern time:Saint Therese of Lisieux. She had a profound love forJesus and the sacrifice he offered up on Calvary. She desired to love Jesus in return, wanting him totake delight in all that she did, which is clearlyevident when one reads the saint’s own account ofher preparation for her first holy communion andher delight in throwing rose petals before theBlessed Sacrament on the feast of Corpus Christi.Saint Therese’s professed name is Sister Thereseof the Child Jesus and the Holy Face. Our Lord, inhis youth and in his suffering, reveals to us thehidden love of God. She delighted in the Lord’shidden presence in the Sacrament of Love, and shewas called to live a hidden life of love and sacrificein the Carmelite convent in Lisieux. However,Therese’s life was anything but hidden; she heldnothing back, offering everything out of love toJesus. She is known for her “little way”, whichconsisted in making small offerings to God. Theintensity of her loving relationship with God,guarded and fostered by the cloister walls as aribcage to the heart, pumped grace throughout theChurch all over the world. This hidden work is whyshe is co-patroness of the foreign missions. Herautobiography The Story of a Soul gives us aglimpse into the heart of this zealous and beautifulsaint and her tender love for Christ. Her feast day is October 1.Corporal Work of Mercy:To give drink to the thirsty.Spiritual Work of Mercy:To forgive offenses willinglyPRAYERS FOR OUR MILITARYRemember our troops in your prayers:A1C Antonio Cap • Sr. Airman Lawrence ClarkMajor Elizabeth Durbin • Cpl.
