SEMANTIC RELATIONSHIPSSynonymy, antonymy, polysemy, etc. are<strong>the</strong> key relationships <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> mentallexicon <strong>of</strong> people. That is <strong>the</strong> reasonwhy many dictionaries list synonyms,<strong>and</strong> sometimes also antonyms, <strong>of</strong>words.


HOW TO TEST SYNONYMY- to analyse <strong>the</strong> degree <strong>of</strong> concurrence <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> connotation <strong>of</strong> a certa<strong>in</strong> word


TECHNICAL LANGUAGE- tries to avoid both synonymy <strong>and</strong> nearsynonymy- still, <strong>the</strong>re are cases when synonymy ispossible


7 words/terms/lexemes <strong>in</strong>11 general <strong>and</strong> 1 technical dictionary –all monol<strong>in</strong>gual- recreation,- fitness,- leisure,- health,- well-be<strong>in</strong>g,- wellness <strong>and</strong>- sport


GNERAL AIM OF RESEARCHHow accurately dictionaries - <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong>this analysis mostly general ones -describe a certa<strong>in</strong> concept by list<strong>in</strong>gpossible synonyms <strong>and</strong> near synonyms <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong>ir names.


SPECIFIC AIM OF RESEARCHWhe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>re are any semantic l<strong>in</strong>ksbetween <strong>the</strong> analysed terms, <strong>and</strong> howmuch attention do certa<strong>in</strong> dictionaries payto list<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> synonyms <strong>of</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> words.

RESULTS- chi-square test - between <strong>the</strong> segments <strong>the</strong>set <strong>of</strong> dictionaries published before <strong>the</strong>year 1995 <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> set <strong>of</strong> dictionariespublished after <strong>the</strong> year 1995 – sum <strong>of</strong>synonyms <strong>of</strong> all seven words perdictionary - did not show any significantdifferences between <strong>the</strong>m (χ2=12.00;df=11; p=0.36)


RESULTS- chi-square test - between <strong>the</strong> segments<strong>the</strong> set <strong>of</strong> dictionaries published before <strong>the</strong>year 1995 <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> set <strong>of</strong> dictionariespublished after <strong>the</strong> year 1995 – sum <strong>of</strong>synonyms per each word per dictionary –yielded only one significant difference:<strong>the</strong> word wellness (χ2=6.00; df=2; p=0.05)


DISCUSSION - SPORT“… a structured, goal-oriented, competitive,contest-based, ludic physical activity”(McPherson et al., 1989)- <strong>the</strong> synonyms that can be found <strong>in</strong>dictionaries for <strong>the</strong> word sport – such asamusement relaxation, game, etc. – aremost frequently connected with <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>almean<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> word sport – jest <strong>and</strong> fun


DISCUSSIONThe R8 dictionary, as a dictionary that <strong>of</strong>fers on<strong>the</strong> whole <strong>the</strong> largest number <strong>of</strong> synonyms<strong>and</strong> near synonyms for all analysedwords/terms - lists <strong>the</strong> word sport as asynonym for recreation, thus probablyconnot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> fact that physical recreationimplies sport<strong>in</strong>g activity <strong>and</strong> physical exerciseparticipation as one form <strong>of</strong> recreation <strong>in</strong>general.


Oxford Dictionary <strong>of</strong> SportsScience <strong>and</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e (M. Kent,1998)- The term recreation is <strong>in</strong>terpreted as activeleisure which is very similar to <strong>the</strong> concept <strong>of</strong>physical recreation <strong>in</strong> k<strong>in</strong>esiology, <strong>and</strong> whichKent terms physical recreation.- In <strong>the</strong> term active leisure <strong>the</strong> attribute activeimplies physical activity.


R8 DICTIONARYLists <strong>the</strong> words general condition, physicalcondition, fitness, but also well-be<strong>in</strong>g assynonyms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> word health.


FITNESSThis means that <strong>the</strong> word fitness is also foundamong <strong>the</strong> synonyms for health <strong>and</strong> it is used,both <strong>in</strong> general language <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> context <strong>of</strong>sport, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> mean<strong>in</strong>g condition orcapacity/ability.


THE CONCEPT OF FITNESSFitness as a concept can be consideredwith<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> context <strong>of</strong> competitive sport(which is <strong>the</strong>n regarded as performancerelatedfitness), but also with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> context<strong>of</strong> health (i.e. health-related fitness).


R6 DICTIONARYListed as many as 14 synonyms <strong>and</strong> nearsynonyms for <strong>the</strong> term well-be<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> nosynonyms for <strong>the</strong> word wellness. <strong>the</strong> publication year - 1995 – <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> R6dictionary - too early year for <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>entry wellness <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> <strong>English</strong> languagelexicon as regards <strong>the</strong> formation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>concept <strong>of</strong> wellness <strong>in</strong> general (1970s)


EXPLANATIONThe term well-be<strong>in</strong>g is better known to morepeople <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y probably frequently connectit with <strong>the</strong> concepts <strong>of</strong> recreation <strong>and</strong> health,maybe also sport <strong>in</strong> that part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mean<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong> which sport is regarded as a healthyactivity.


EXPLANATION It is possible that <strong>the</strong> concept <strong>of</strong> well-be<strong>in</strong>gis l<strong>in</strong>ked to <strong>the</strong> concept <strong>of</strong> wellness <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>mental lexicon <strong>of</strong> people.


WELLNESS & FITNESSWellness, as well as fitness, implies goodcondition, both physical <strong>and</strong> mental.


CONCLUSIONThe words/terms recreation, fitness, leisure,health, well-be<strong>in</strong>g, wellness <strong>and</strong> sport are<strong>in</strong>terconnected.


CONCLUSIONSome <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> analysed terms can be arrangedas synonyms ei<strong>the</strong>r by <strong>the</strong> superord<strong>in</strong>ate fieldor by <strong>the</strong> subfield <strong>the</strong>y belong to:- fitness, from technical k<strong>in</strong>esiological po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong>view, can belong to a superord<strong>in</strong>ate field <strong>of</strong>health, but also to <strong>the</strong> subfield physicalpreparation <strong>of</strong> athletes- well-be<strong>in</strong>g/wellness also belongs to <strong>the</strong>superord<strong>in</strong>ate field <strong>of</strong> health <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> subfieldrecreation or leisure
