Mount in the HCACThis year will be the Mount’s men’s cross country team’s eleventhseason of competition as well as members of the Heartland CollegiateAthletic Conference. Other institutions in the conference includeAnderson University, Bluffton University, Defiance College, EarlhamCollege, Franklin College, Hanover College, Manchester College,Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, and Transylvania UniversityIn 2002, the <strong>Lions</strong> finished seventh out of eight schools in the HCACChampionships as Mount runner Kurtis Smith recorded a seventh-placefinish and was named to the All-HCAC Team. A total of six runners racedfor the Mount.The <strong>Lions</strong> took another seventh place finish in 2003. AndersonUniversity led the conference with a first place finish and 34 points.Manchester University followed Anderson with 59 points. Kurtis Smithled the <strong>Lions</strong> with a 14 th place finish, two spots away from claimingall-conference honors.The Mount placed seventh for the third straight season in 2004, asAnderson once again captured first place in the team standings. BobHammergren led the way for the <strong>Lions</strong> in the HCAC meet, leading threeteammates to the finish line.The team did not record a team score in 2005’s HCAC Championship.Anderson once again finished in first place. Joe Grace led the way forthe <strong>Lions</strong> in the HCAC meet, placing 55th.Although 2006 was another rebuilding year for the men’s crosscountry squad, they did manage to place fifth out of nine schools inthe HCAC Championship meet. Jeff Schroer led the Mount in the 8k runwith a time of 28:09.36 and a 15 th finish.The <strong>Lions</strong> recorded another fifth place conference meet finish in2007, as Jeff Schroer moved up two places from the year before tofinish 13th, missing by one spot being named All-Conference. Andersoncaptured first place in the team standings. The Mount finished seventhat the Conference Tournament in 2008. The <strong>Lions</strong> had five runners whocompeted in the HCAC tournament. Jeff Schroer placed 10th at themeet, which earned him All-Conference Honors, with a time of 26:46.The team finished in eighth place for the Conference Tournamentin 2009. Jeff Schroer was the top runner for the <strong>Lions</strong> finishing 19thplace. He also led three other runners to the finish line.The <strong>Lions</strong> placed eighth out of nine teams in the HCAC Tournament in2010. Jonathan Mathis led the Mount runners with a 40th place finishand a time of 28:52 at the HCAC Tournament.In 2011 the <strong>Lions</strong> finished eighth out of 10 teams in the HCACtournament.
