Please visit us atwww.msj.edu to stay current with the <strong>Lions</strong> and the progress on campus.God bless,Tony Aretz, Ph.D.PresidentMeet the Director of <strong>Athletics</strong>Steve RadcliffeSteve Radcliffe enters his 18th year as the <strong>Lions</strong>’athletics director for the <strong>2012</strong>-2013 school year, andhe looks forward to another outstanding season ofathletics at the Mount.Radcliffe, who oversees 22 athletic programsat the Mount, has long been a part of the sportsprograms at the College. Radcliffe began his career at the Mount in1986 as an athletic trainer and was hired to implement the Mount’sfirst academic program for athletic training in 1989. In addition toteaching athletic training, he was the <strong>Lions</strong>’ head athletic trainer for allthe intercollegiate sports at the College.Radcliffe became the Mount’s athletic director in 1995. Upon enteringthe position, he stressed the importance of upholding the College’sstellar reputation of academics and athletics as a positive influencein student life and development at the Mount. Radcliffe received hisbachelor’s degree in 1978 from the University of Montana and hismaster’s degree in physical education in 1981 from Miami University(Ohio).Steve and his wife, Darlene, have two children, Victoria and Michael.The Radcliffes live in Delhi.Heartland Collegiate Athletic ConferenceThe Mount is a member of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference(HCAC) and is also a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association(NCAA) Division III. FacilitiesSports Complex and Schueler FieldThe Sports Complex provides a state-of-the-art space for student-athletes and thefans who support them. It houses concessions, locker rooms, showers, equipmentstorage, and athletic training facilities and can seat sell-out crowds of 2,400.Sporting a synthetic, all-weather playing surface and track, the Mount’s SchuelerField plays host to the football, soccer and lacrosse teams, in addition to hometrack meets.Harrington CenterFeaturing a 2,000-seat gymnasium, the Jean Patrice Harrington, SC, Student Centeris home to the <strong>Lions</strong> basketball and volleyball teams, and plays host to the wrestlingteam’s home matches. In addition, the facility includes a running track, racquetballcourts, a fitness center, and an athletic training center, providing service tostudent-athletes and the greater Mount community.Kinder Morgan Softball ComplexThe Kinder Morgan Softball Complex has played host to the Mount’s softball teamsince 2007. In addition, the College has developed property on River Road intopractice fields for soccer and baseball. The facilities feature parking, restroomsand a service building for equipment storage.Marge Schott StadiumThe <strong>Lions</strong>’ baseball team plays home games at the University of Cincinnati’s MargeSchott Stadium. Marge Schott Stadium, has a seating capacity of 3,085, a field turfplaying surface and a fully-lit playing field. In addition, the complex houses indoorbatting cages and pitcher’s mound, a fully equipped press box with private viewingareas, a players’ clubhouse and lounge, dressing rooms for coaches, full laundry andequipment facilities, and a state-of-the-art training room.Aston Oaks Golf CourseAston Oaks Golf Course, located 15 minutes from campus, is the Mount’s home golfcourse for the men’s and women’s golf teams. Constructed by the Jack NicklausDesign Group, Aston Oaks is a par-72 course. The men’s team faces 6,908 yards witha 73.6 rating and 140 slope. The improvement process will beginon August 31st with the College of Mount St. Joseph Invitational. Thisis the second year in a row that the <strong>Lions</strong> have hosted their home meetat Heritage Park in Cincinnati. Head Coach Tina Blakley knows howmuch goes into hosting a meet.“It’s something that needs to be planned for about a year inadvance, and it’s a lot of extra work, but we are excited to do it to helpgrow the College of Mount St. Joseph Cross Country brand,’’ Blakleystates. “We believe that if we continue to host this meet it will growinto a significant meet in the years to come.”The <strong>Lions</strong> return five runners from last year, and have also added twonewcomers. Key returners include Jon Mathis, who finished highest onthe team in seven of the eight meets last year, Colton Chicketti, ChrisKlaine, Kory Phelps, and Sean Wiwi. Klaine, Mathis, Phelps and Wiwi allreturn for their third season with the <strong>Lions</strong>, while Chicketti is back fora second campaign. First-year runners Anthony Knox and Luke Schaferjoin the list of Mount runners for <strong>2012</strong>.Coach Blakley is particularly excited about a few of the upcomingmeets.“I always look forward to the All-Ohio meet for the level ofcompetition,’’ Blakley adds. “It’s a great experience for us to runagainst teams from all over Ohio.“One of our conference schools, Rose-Hulman, is hosting the NCAADivision III Nationals in November,’’ adds Blakley. “They are hostinga Pre-Nationals meet on Saturday, October 6th and our team will becompeting in that meet with colleges from all over the United States.”Blakley states the team has set some goals for the upcomingcampaign.“We have two main goals this season and the first one is to improveour finish in the HCAC Championships,’’ Blakley says. “Last year wefinished in eighth place and this year we are striving to finish in thetop five.”Our second goal as a team is to maintain a 3.0 or higher overallGPA. Academics are a priority and we want them to do their bestacademically, as well as athletically.”Micquelle Burton has the fifth fastest time in Mount history in a 5K race.The <strong>Lions</strong>’ second-year head coach has continued to help lay a strongfoundation for the program. She encourages her athletes to cross trainduring the off-season and to build a strong endurance base during thepre-season. She is adamant about the athletes following strength andconditioning program, making good nutritional choices and allowingthemselves adequate time for recovery.The Mount’s season begins on August 31 and the <strong>Lions</strong> will look tobegin with a strong performance in their home meet that they can carrywith them throughout the year.10COLLEGE OF MOUNT ST. Coach Blakley isvery committed to creating a team environment inwhich the Cross Country and Track and Field athletesexperience success academically as well as athletically.She is passionate about enabling Mount athletes achieve theirpersonal goals and is an advocate for educating athletes about crosstraining, nutrition, strength and conditioning and injury prevention.Coach Blakley partners with the Mount’s Strength and ConditioningDirector as well as the Athletic Training Department to ensure thateach athlete in her team’s programs have an overall balance in theirtraining and competition.Coach Blakley is an AFAA certified personal trainer and has helpeddirect many individual athletes and teams improve their performancethrough strength training programs. In addition, she has worked inthe fitness industry for over a dozen years and has a versatile trainingbackground. Her personal interests involve strength training andcompeting in multi-discipline endurance races, long distance runningand cycling.She is currently pursuing a degree in Sport Management at theMount and is on the Dean’s List. He saw action in three of the <strong>Lions</strong>’ 2011meets, finishing with a personal-best time of 21:16at the 5K Queen City Invitational. Chicketti is alsoon the Mount’s track & field team. Head Coach Tina Blakley says thatChicketti has developed a good work ethic and continues to strive forexcellence both academically and athletically. HeadCoach Tina Blakley says that Mathis is extremely competitive and eachseason thrives on the team atmosphere. Mathis grabbed a <strong>MSJ</strong> 5K besttime spot in 2010 with an 18:06 at the Queen City Invitational. Inaddition, Mathis does a great job of making new members of the teamfeel comfortable, according to Blakley. Mount in the HCACThis year will be the Mount’s men’s cross country team’s eleventhseason of competition as well as members of the Heartland CollegiateAthletic Conference. Other institutions in the conference includeAnderson University, Bluffton University, Defiance College, EarlhamCollege, Franklin College, Hanover College, Manchester College,Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, and Transylvania UniversityIn 2002, the <strong>Lions</strong> finished seventh out of eight schools in the HCACChampionships as Mount runner Kurtis Smith recorded a seventh-placefinish and was named to the All-HCAC Team. A total of six runners racedfor the Mount.The <strong>Lions</strong> took another seventh place finish in 2003. AndersonUniversity led the conference with a first place finish and 34 points.Manchester University followed Anderson with 59 points. Kurtis Smithled the <strong>Lions</strong> with a 14 th place finish, two spots away from claimingall-conference honors.The Mount placed seventh for the third straight season in 2004, asAnderson once again captured first place in the team standings. BobHammergren led the way for the <strong>Lions</strong> in the HCAC meet, leading threeteammates to the finish line.The team did not record a team score in 2005’s HCAC Championship.Anderson once again finished in first place. Joe Grace led the way forthe <strong>Lions</strong> in the HCAC meet, placing 55th.Although 2006 was another rebuilding year for the men’s crosscountry squad, they did manage to place fifth out of nine schools inthe HCAC Championship meet. Jeff Schroer led the Mount in the 8k runwith a time of 28:09.36 and a 15 th finish.The <strong>Lions</strong> recorded another fifth place conference meet finish in2007, as Jeff Schroer moved up two places from the year before tofinish 13th, missing by one spot being named All-Conference. Andersoncaptured first place in the team standings. The Mount finished seventhat the Conference Tournament in 2008. The <strong>Lions</strong> had five runners whocompeted in the HCAC tournament. Jeff Schroer placed 10th at themeet, which earned him All-Conference Honors, with a time of 26:46.The team finished in eighth place for the Conference Tournamentin 2009. Jeff Schroer was the top runner for the <strong>Lions</strong> finishing 19thplace. He also led three other runners to the finish line.The <strong>Lions</strong> placed eighth out of nine teams in the HCAC Tournament in2010. The improvement process will beginon August 31st with the College of Mount St. Joseph Invitational. Thisis the second year in a row that the <strong>Lions</strong> have hosted their home meetat Heritage Park in Cincinnati. Second-year Head Coach Tina Blakleyknows how much goes into hosting a meet.“It’s something that needs to be planned for about a year inadvance, and it’s a lot of extra work, but we are excited to do it to helpgrow the College of Mount St. Joseph Cross Country brand,’’ Blakleystates. “We believe that if we continue to host this meet it will growinto a significant meet in the years to come.”The <strong>Lions</strong> have four runners returning from the previous season. Thelone senior will be, Cyreesa Raber, and three juniors, Kelleen Scott,Bailey Schnurr and Emily Heyl, along with one sophomore, EmilyWohlfrom. Newcomers to the team are freshman, Amanda Shelby andCarly Ruwan.Coach Blakley is confident that the more experienced runners on theteam will help teach the newcomers what it takes to compete at thecollegiate level and how to balance academics with athletics.“Hopefully this is a process that will continue into the future so wewill always have strong peer leadership,’’ Blakley states.“We believe Amanda (Shelby) can join this program and runcompetitively at the collegiate level immediately,’’ Blakley says. “As shecontinues to expand on her running abilities, I believe she will becomeone of the top three runners in the HCAC by the completion of herfreshman season.”The Mount is scheduled to compete in eight meets this upcomingyear. Coach Blakley is particularly excited about a few of these meets.“I always look forward to the All-Ohio meet for the level ofcompetition,’’ Blakley states. “It’s a great experience for us to runagainst teams from all over Ohio. Another top meet this season ishosted by one of our conference schools, Rose-Hulman. Since they willbe hosting the NCAA Division III Nationals in November, they will alsohost a Pre-Nationals meet held on Saturday, October 6th and our teamwill be competing in that meet with colleges from all over the UnitedStates.”The <strong>Lions</strong> will also race in the HCAC Championships on Oct. 27 atBluffton University.“Our most important meet is the HCAC Championships,’’ Blakley adds.“Our main goal is to improve our performance by scoring more pointsSarah Kennedy ran in all seven meets for the <strong>Lions</strong> last fall.so we can finish in the top seven. Our other main goal as a team is tomaintain a 3.0 or higher overall GPA. Academics are a priority and wewant them to do their best academically as well as athletically.”Blakley believes in the strength of her team and their work ethic.She encourages her athletes to cross train during the off season and tobuild a strong endurance base during the pre-season. Coach Blakley isvery committed to creating a team environment inwhich the Cross Country and Track and Field athletesexperience success academically as well as athletically.She is passionate about enabling Mount athletes achieve theirpersonal goals and is an advocate for educating athletes about crosstraining, nutrition, strength and conditioning and injury prevention.Coach Blakley partners with the Mount’s Strength and ConditioningDirector as well as the Athletic Training Department to ensure thateach athlete in her team’s programs have an overall balance in theirtraining and competition.Coach Blakley is an AFAA certified personal trainer and has helpeddirect many individual athletes and teams improve their performancethrough strength training programs. In addition, she has worked inthe fitness industry for over a dozen years and has a versatile trainingbackground. Her personal interests involve strength training andcompeting in multi-discipline endurance races, long distance runningand cycling.She is currently pursuing a degree in Sport Management at theMount and is on the Dean’s List. HeadCoach Tina Blakley says Heyl, who has been rehabbingfor the past year, is able to practice and compete this season. Blakleyadds that Heyl looks ready and focused this fall to have a successful<strong>2012</strong> season. Emily is the daughter of Jane and David Heyl.Cyreesa RaberSenior • Major: NursingHometown (High School): West Chester, OH(Lakota East)Raber returns for her third season with the Mount.She raced in five of the team’s 2011 meets, turningin her top team placing (fourth) at the <strong>MSJ</strong>Invitational. Raber had her season-best time of 23:45 at the NationalCatholic Invitational, finishing at 23:45. Head Coach Tina Blakleysays that Raber, the team’s lone senior and the <strong>Lions</strong>’ 2011 HCACAll-Sportsmanship award winner, exhibits good leadership qualitiesand motivates her teammates. Blakley adds that Raber, who excelsacademically, has continued to improve her performance each yearand ran her fastest times during the 2011 campaign. Bailey SchnurrJunior • Major: NursingHometown (High School): Sunbury, OH(Big Walnut)Schnurr returns for her third season with theMount. She saw action in six of the team’s seveninvitationals last fall, missing only the Queen CityInvitational. Schnurr was the team’s third-fastest runner in two meetslast season and fourth-fastest runner in the other four meets. Schnurrturned in times of 23:17 and 23:18 in back-to-back weeks at the All-Ohio Championship and the Wilmington College Fall Classic. She isalso on the Mount’s track & field team. Head Coach Tina Blakley saysthat Schnurr has proven many times her competitiveness and workscontinually throughout the season to make personal improvements aswell as encouraging her teammates. Other institutions that are in the conference areAnderson University, Bluffton University, Defiance College, EarlhamCollege, Franklin College, Hanover College, Manchester College, RoseHulman Institute of Technology, and Transylvania University.In their first HCAC action, the team was fifth out of seven teamsat the 1999 HCAC Championships. During that season, Erin Hill ranthe race in 19:52.9, placed eighth, and was named All-Conference.She was only 48 seconds behind the leader. In 2000, the <strong>Lions</strong> foundthemselves in sixth place as freshman Katie Nickoli placed 10th with atime of 19:57, and earned All-Conference.In 2001, the Mount did not qualify to receive a team score in thechampionship because only four runners competed (five runners areneeded to qualify).In 2002, the Mount was the host school and posted a seventh placefinish in the eight school conference meet. Katie Nickoli led the wayfor the <strong>Lions</strong> with a 26th place finish recording a time of 25:52 overthe 6,000 meter course at Mt. Airy Forest (Cincinnati, Ohio). Andersonplaced first in the team standings.In 2003 the <strong>Lions</strong> took another seventh place finish out of eightschools. Kati Nickoli also led the women with a 12th place finishof 24:51.66 and gained All-Conference honors. Anderson Universityfinished first again at the meet. The 2004 HCAC Championshipmeet saw Anderson repeat as conference champs, while the <strong>Lions</strong>did not record a score, due to only four runners competing. JessicaBiedenbender led the way for the Mount with a time of 24:29 and a22nd place finish.In 2005, the Mount finished in seventh place at the HCACChampionship. Anderson once again took home the title in the overall<strong>2012</strong> <strong>CROSS</strong> <strong>COUNTRY</strong> GUIDE 23
