Newby Primary: an introductionNewby Primary School is located in the heart of the West Bowling community within thecity of Bradford. There are 60 pupils in each year group with the exception of year 5which was increased <strong>to</strong> 90 <strong>to</strong> meet demand from new arrivals <strong>to</strong> the area. The schoolhas a 39 place nursery that offers 78 part-time places. Requests for places at the schooland nursery have his<strong>to</strong>rically been greater than availability.The school was built in 1985 <strong>to</strong> open-plan design and then updated in several phasessince, the most recent being the re-design of the nursery <strong>to</strong> mirror current best practice.The site now comprises the school and nursery, separate sports hall and art studio,community room, office suite in the ex-caretaker’s house and multi-use games area.The community book facilities out of school hours and have free access <strong>to</strong> the extensivegrounds in the evenings.The school is seen as a significant hub in the community and outstanding relationshipswith, for example, local mosques, churches and community groups have beenhighlighted as exemplary in several forums at a national level.Much has been achieved but, like all schools, Newby never stands still. Current areas ofdevelopment are enhancing pupil progress through a fresh look at continuity,progression and assessment and further development of the links between the teachingof English and other subjects.The level of job satisfaction at the school is high. The average length of service byteachers is 13 years. This does not imply complacency but rather the degree ofappropriate challenge and sense of pride that permeates the school.In summary, the school is set within the heart of the city, has excellent facilities,engaging pupils, a strong and dedicated staff team and excellent relationships with thewider community and other schools.
