Expanding the HDV Format as aGlobal StandardFrom the outset, the HDV 1080i specificationof the HDV format has been developed torecord stunning HD images with 1080 activescanning lines on tape. It adopts the MPEG-2compression format, using 8-bit digitalcomponent recording at approximately 25Mb/s,which is the same data rate as the DVCAM/DV format, enabling a long recording time oncompact DV cassettes.For example, more than 60 minutes of highquality HD images can be recorded on amini DV cassette and Digital Master. As withthe DVCAM and DV formats, the HDV formatallows an i.LINK connection to compatiblenon-linear editors, enabling a cost-effective HDproduction system. The sheer volume of HDV1080i professional and consumer equipmentused around the world is a clear indicationthat HDV 1080i has become one of the mostpopular HD formats.Note: Although not used in Sony’s HDV products, the HDV formatalso defines the HDV 720p specification, which features 720effective scanning lines (progressive scanning system).Digital Master Tape – The PerfectMedia for HDVThe HDV specification includes two types of HDrecording – 720p at a video bit rate of 19Mbpsor 1080i at a rate of 25Mbps – allowing outputof either SD or HD signals for effortless integrationinto any existing production system. DigitalMaster tape has been designed and tested withHDV VTRs for outstanding performance.Understanding Digital Master TapeDesigned for any MiniDV, DVCAM or HDVcamcorder, Digital Master tape is unique. It’sthe only professional video tape with not onebut two active magnetic layers for 80% fewererrors than HDV consumer tape.
