November 2004Hoval - a philosophyRecently a customer told me that, for him, Hoval represents a wholephilosophy, not only products. It seems that people associate theHoval brand not just withinnovation and quality: there ismore to it than that. For us, that“more” is what we call “addedvalue”. By proving that we reallydo offer better value, we areworking towards the goal wehave set ourselves of having notjust satisfied customers, butgenuinely enthusiastic ones.AUDI AG at Ingolstadt, GermanyA key factor here is our high levelof competence. It is the basis onwhich we have founded oursuccess. For us it is both an obligationand a constant challengeto continue to maintain this levelof competence in the future, andto use it to the benefit of our customers– that is our conviction. It is this conviction that makes thedifference between satisfactionand enthusiasm, and it is whatdefines the Hoval philosophy.Magna Racino near Vienna, AustriaWe are rewarded for this not justin terms of further sales increase, but also by the fact that customerskeep turning to us when aparticularly sophisticated solutionis needed. We are proud topresent to you some examples ofthis in this issue of “Insights”.This makes us very glad, becausewe identify with our customers’achievements.Hoval is not a giant: we are “onebig family”, whose greatest assetis its enthusiastic customers.Peter GernerCEO heating technologyThe „Gallia“ at Lake Lucerne, SwitzerlandContentsHoval - a philosophy 1AUDI AG Ingolstadt 2 - 3Magna Racino 4Gaja and Campari 5Hoval Indoor climate systems 6 - 7Oil condensing boilers 8The „Gallia“ 9Short reports 10 -11The final page 12

2 Hoval Insights, November 2004AUDI - a fascinating worldThe plant at IngolstadtFour rings go down in historyDo you know the origin of the four rings thatmake up the Audi logo? They represent thealliance of four German automotive brands, allof which started manufacturing cars at thebeginning of the 20 th century. Horch (since1901), DKW (1928), Audi (1909) and Wanderer(1905). In 1932, the foundation was thuslaid for AUTO UNION AG, based in Chemnitz,Germany. Incidentally, “Audi” is Latin for theGerman word “Horch” (“listen!”).In 1931 the first series vehicle with front-wheeldrive appeared, and in 1934 came the firstsuccesses with racing cars, constructed on thebasis of plans by Ferdinand Porsche. In 1937,Auto Union set a speed record of more than400 km/h along a normal road, in a 545 HPstreamline car. In 1938 the company startedgathering empirical data from rollover tests, inorder to maximize safety. In 1942 the production of civilian vehiclesceased, and munitions were produced instead. In 1945, AUTO UNION AG’s industrial plantswere dismantled in order to pay reparations tothe Soviet Union, and in 1948 AUTO UNIONAG was deleted from the Chemnitz companyregister.A new start – crowned with successIn September 1949, AUTO UNION GmbH wasre-established with its headquarters at Ingolstadt,Germany. A delivery van, a 125 cc motorbike, from 1950 various versions of a motor car,and later a number of motorcycles – attuned tothe modest financial situation of the post-warperiod – all contributed to a rapid increase inthe success of the company. During the German“economic miracle” the motor car became asymbol of prosperity, and in the late 1960’s andthe 1970’s Auto Union (which had joined withNeckarsulmer (NSU) in 1969 and was nowknown as NSU Auto Union AG) came up withcult creations such as the “100 Coupé S”, theFor the pastcentury, the Audilook has beendefined by twofactors: style anddistinction. Hereare two primeexamples of extremeeleganceand power that wesimply have toshow you:“NSU Ro 80” and the “quattro”, which becamesynonymous with supremacy on mountainroads and rally tracks.AUDI AG’s Headquarters in Ingolstadt occupyan area of some 200 ha, which is home to thegroup’s Executive Board, Technical DevelopmentDepartment, Head Office, and the majorpart of the company’s production plants. Around30,000 people work here – equivalent to 90 %of the entire population of Liechtenstein (!).There is also the plant in Neckarsulm, at which14,000 people are employed, and the companyquattro GmbH is based. But we are interestedin Ingolstadt, because that is where our specialrelationship with Audi springs from. The 12-cylinder Horch 670Sport Cabrioletfrom 1931 ...andthe Audi TT 3.2 quattro (V6with 250 HP, from 0-100km/h in 6.4 s).“Everything shrinks in itsrear-view mirror. 3 Hoval Insights, November 2004The Hoval THW-IZ 26000/16 baris a high-pressure hot water boiler, or more specifically:a double fire-tube smoke boiler with anoutput of 26,000 kW and 2 exhaust gas heatexchangers. It could be used to heat approx. 1,730 one-familyhouses.Its data:Length: 9 metres (without heat exchanger)Diameter: 4.5 metresWeight: 60 tonsOperating pressure: 16 barOperating temperature: 130 °CExhaust gas temperature at chimney inlet: 70 °CExhaust gas heat exchanger output: 900 kWThe THW-IZ looks vast, but in the contextof the overall energy supply of Audi atIngolstadt it is only an added-on feature –albeit the one added-on feature that allowsthe Heating Plant West (N 11) to achievethe best level of efficiency possible.A perfect energy conceptAudi Ingolstadt has two heating stations. In oneof these, namely Heating Plant West (buildingN 11), two gas-fired steam boiler plants wereset up in 1988 (total output 64 MW). At the sametime, space was allowed for an enlargement ofthe hall, in case the demand for heat shouldrise. Due to constant increases in productionvolumes in recent years, this finally becamenecessary. In spring 2002, when all details and demandsof this enlargement were set, tenders werecalled for a hot water boiler with a thermal outputof approx. 25-26 MW, in particular: a gas-fired,large water-space three-pass boiler with two firetubes (separately fired) and a water capacity of60,000 liters. A major demand was that, inaddition to coping with both basic and peakdemand periods, it should also be as energyefficientas possible, in other words it shouldbe able to be used variably during full- and partloadoperation. For this reason, the Audi building techniciansalso demanded two separate exhaust gas heatexchangers – a solution apart usual standardsbut actually the best to achieve the highestpossible modulation to the various operatingstates (in practice, this now means an additional900 kW on top of the output of the boiler).Tailor-made from top to bottomThe high level of flexibility requiredmeant that it was Hovalwho won the tender for thisproject. “Standard solutions”were not going to meet theneeds of the customer, norcomply with the spacerestraints.Only a tailor-made customizeddesign, taking into account theincreased operational safety, inspection and supervisoryrequirements, would besuitable in order to make boththe construction and theoperation of the plant as simpleand as efficient as possible. Hoval designedand constructed it. Everything would have beenperfect – if only the plant hadn’t been quite soheavy. The thin ceiling of the basement below was notstrong enough to support the 120-tonne load(60 t plant + 60 t water). For this reason, Hovaldesigned the plant in such a way as to positionthe weight exactly upon the four columns thatsupport the ceiling of the basement. The plant commenced operation in April 2004,and it does its job so well that you might almostimagine it was – well, tailor-made.P.S.: All the information in this report relatingto Audi was kindly supplied to us by the companyitself. The title „.. a fascinating world“ isan indication of the impressions we got whileworking with them. We have only been able togive you a brief insight into the wonders thatcan be found on the company’s website:www.audi.de. You will be amazed at what youcan discover there.

4 Hoval Insights, November 2004Magna Racino, AustriaIn 1954, a young toolmaker emigrated with a suitcase and a modest amountof starting capital from Weiz in Styria (Austria) to Canada, where he foundeda company supplying to the automobile industry, and today he heads acompany with 73,000 employees in more than 200 production locations and43 technology centers: Frank Stronach’s Magna International Incorporation. Her name is Slot Machine:she is the daughter of a WorldChampion, out of one of thefastest mares in Europe, andpromises an exceptionalcareer in Magna Racino –here you see here “in privacy”with a snowy nose. The Magna Racino: the name promises racing and casino, and it doesn’t disappoint.Frank Stronach: „I am horse-crazy.“This man’s dream of having his own horse cametrue on his typical level: breeding successfulracehorses. In 1999 Frank Stronach founded the MagnaEntertainment Corporation (MEC), buying 13respected racecourses and thereby becomingthe biggest racecourse operator in NorthAmerica (5,000 employees), as well as creatingthe world’s foremost network for betting on livesporting events. In recent years, Frank Stronach has been afrequent visitor to his home country, Austria.MEC needed to be represented in Europe, too.In just 1 1/2 years, he built the Magna Racinoin Ebreichsdorf, south of Vienna. Capitalinvested: EUR 75 million.More than just a racecourseThe Magna Racino, while known as Europe’smost modern horseracing venue, is actually farmore than that. It is designed for a variety offunctions: casino, gourmet paradise and eventsvenue. How flexible this entertainment locationis can be seen just by taking a look at the periodfrom 12 June to 4 July 2004: Horseracing washeld in the afternoons, while in the eveningsthe action continued with live broadcasts of theEuro 2004 football games on a 240 m 2 videoscreen (the largest in Europe) in theEntertainment Center, as well as on the otherscreen by the racetrack, which at 100 m 2 ishardly small. The final was treated as a specialevent, and celebrated with a variety show andfireworks.A clever pricing policy helps to attract visitorsfrom all groups of society and age, aiming tobring in 500,000 guests in 2005. The entranceprice of EUR 5 includes a EUR 3 bettingvoucher, so that anyone who has never bettedon “his” horse may find out how exciting it is tofollow the finish of a race and - perhaps - to win.Internationally establishedThe opening of the Magna Racino on 4.4.2004,which was attended by important local and internationalnotabilities, was viewed with interestby the entire horseracing world. Since then,world-class gallopers and trotters have beentraveling from far and wide to attend the lucrativeraces.A look behind the dazzling scenes to real horselifesgives an excellent impression: only 0.5 %of the 2,700,000 m 2 at Magna Racino is commercialarea, of which most is occupied by thestables for 600 horses, and the 80 apartmentsfor grooms. This means that more than 268 haof land are reserved for horses alone. The trotters’ finish: 1. MagnaRacino winner John Fogerty of“Stall Oliver”, for which OliverBadura also drives. You can find more of his photosat www.oliverbadura.at or at theMEC site: www.magnaracino.at.A plant with Max-3The Event Center is heated by means of twoHoval Max-3 (1250 and 750) and two compacthot water stations, each of 200 kW. Naturalgas is used here, but it could just as easily beoil. As a genuine 3-pass boiler with internalexhaust gas recirculation, the Max-3 offers anumber of benefits in addition to its high rateof utilization: It is economical, has a longlifespan, is easy to maintain and corrosionresistant(the special arrangement of itsconvection heating surfaces ensures an evenflow of combustion gases), and its low exhaustemissionlevels make the Hoval Max-3 environmentally-friendly.Running just for fun.The horses settled in Ebreichsdorfin autumn 2003, long beforethe Magna Racino had finishedbeing built. Here you can see howthey enjoy wintertime.

5 Hoval Insights, November 2004High spirits - made in ItalyItalian cuisine has conquered the entire world, and not just withpizza and pasta. Italian wines, aside from French wines, are theundisputed world leaders. They grow and thrive in places likethis one: Barbaresco. For wine connoisseurs, one name is almostmagic:Gaja“Decanter”, the magazine for oenology, nominatedhim “Man of the Year” in 1998:Angelo Gaja. The Gaja estates in Barbaresco and ...Pieve Santa RestitutaBefore such an elaborate treat can be created, there are a few very basic technical conditionsthat must be met: e.g. before filling the bottlesthey must be absolutely sterile. To this end,Hoval has installed a TND 580 low-pressuresteam boiler in the winery at Barbaresco.Of course, we never imagined that we wouldproduce even “dishwashers” ...The Gaja’s – of which Angelo represents thefourth generation – have been winegrowers inPiedmont since 1859. From Barbaresco theyhave gradually expanded their area of cultivationacross Tuscany, where their estates PieveSanta Restituta and Ca’Marcanda can be found. The Gaja’s are viewed as pioneers in the worldof top-quality Italian wines. That is because, over the past 30 years, the wine of this regionhas developed from being a good drink for dayto-dayconsumption to a top-class delight forconnoisseurs, sought-after throughout theworld. Angelo Gaja is one of those exceptionalpeople who, with their gentle hands, boundlessenergy, rich experience and passion, work dailyto conjure Chardonnay, Barbaresco, Barolo andBrunello di Montalcino to masterpieces – thekind of wines that simply turn an evening into acelebration.Rarities in the truest sense of the wordGaja wines are never to be found in the supermarket, and seldom in a wine shop. This isbecause Gaja produces only a small quantityevery year, to ensure that what is produced isof the very highest quality. It is mostly reservedin advance for regular customers. Only a smallamount remains for independent dealers. But for YOU …we have got hold of a few bottles from AngeloGaja, and will be offering them as prizes ina pre-Christmas draw for all those who makea purchase in November. So look forward to asurprise treat!Around the same time, in 1860,another company was founded thatyou will certainly have heard of, andwhose name stands for far morethan you might suspect:CampariWhenever you are savoring an Ouzo 12, aCynar, Cinzano, SKYY Vodka, Ricadonna, orperhaps a wine bearing the well-known Sella &Mosca brand – what you really have in yourglass is „Campari“.The Milan-based Campari Group is one of theten largest manufacturers of alcoholic drinks inthe world, and is still family-run. The opportunitiesfor expansion created by, for example, the EU, led to the creation of Campari Internationalin 1995, whose multi-cultural marketingteam helps it to generate multi-million salesfigures per year.At Campari in Novi Ligure (Piedmont) there are4 Hoval THD 3-3000/12 bar steam boilers inoperation. These are used for sterilizing bottleslike at Gaja, but here they also serve to heatthe production hall.To help you enjoy your Campari, here’s alittle tip in red:Campari should always be drunk ice-cold, withorange. Lemon alters its distinctive flavor.Enjoy a cocktail? why not try an “Americano”:Half Campari, half Cinzano Rosso, with a splashof soda water – how much you add depends onthe alcohol content you require. Add some orangepeel, and you’re done. Summer all overagain!

6 Hoval insights, November 2004Hoval Indoor climate systemsAmazing what this little disk can do ...It is more than just a presentation ofthe extensive product range that hasbeen developed, built and distributedby us at our own businessdivision at the Hoval plant in Schaan(FL).This CD*) contains a video, technical descriptions, specialist reports and reference lists – butthat’s all standard, so that isn’t what makes itdifferent from other presentations. Here, plannerswill find much more:• documents to download• ACAD drawings• biddings texts• order specifications*) available in national languages of all ourpartners! This means that a lot of the preliminary work isdone already, thus saving valuable time duringthe project development stage. This makes iteasy to make the right choice, and to put yourproject into action.Tailor-made solutionsThe modular system which has been developedto meet all the possible demands can cater forlarge spaces of between 4 and 25 m in height, thus complying with all your requirements. Whetherit is air distribution, aeration or ventilation, heating or cooling, or tailor-made customizeddesigns that are required, all the needs of ourcustomers are met perfectly. The systems arein use in more than 25 countries, and have beentried and tested thousands of times.Efficient ...The indoor climate systems are not just greatin terms of environmental protection and theexcellent conditions that they create in industrial, commercial and multi-functional buildings. They are also great in terms of money.A key feature of Hoval indoor climate systemsis heat recovery.Everything we have learnt comes from our veryown ideas factory. Around 27 years ago, Hovalwas looking for an additional feather to add toits bow beside heating systems, and it cameup with ventilation technology. A key factor inthis decision was the oil crisis of the 1960’s,prior to which heat recovery had never beentaken seriously. This led directly to the developmentof the Hoval PWT ® plate heat exchanger, which is used in both central ventilationsystems and Hoval indoor climate systems.Since then, we have become the worldwideleader in the market for ventilation technologyunits. Some time ago, we devoted a short report toHoval plate heat exchangers, thereby calculatinghow much energy this product has alreadysaved. Here is the result:The energy saved by the approx.77,000 Hoval plate heat exchangersthat have been supplied sofar comes to around2.3 billion kWh =80 Millionen EUR per yearThe new member in the family of heat recoverysystems is the Hoval rotary heat exchanger. Itsspecial feature for promoting heat and coldrecovery – i.e. during winter and summer use –is moisture transfer by means of sorption. Thisensures that the required humidity of the roomis kept constant, without fluctuation (which canoccur if a condensation rotor is used).... and uncomplicatedParticularly good news for our customers (andus): These devices are simple, robust and easyto maintain. They are supplied ready-toconnect,are quick and simple to install, andcan be extended or modified without difficulty(air inlet and outlet ducts are not usually necessary). They are operated via control andregulating systems developed especially forthem, in order to ensure the best possiblefunctioning and the lowest possible operatingcosts. Maintenance can be carried out easilyfrom the roof, and does not interfere withoperation – it is not necessary to switch thesystem off for this. The planning CD is available to you freeupon request by e-mail via:edith.ludescher@hoval.comStephan Eder is responsible for the indoorclimate system business.TopVent ® DKV:Recirculation unit for heating and coolingTopVent ® :Roof unit for ventilation, heating and coolingRoofVent ® LHW:Roof ventilation unit with heat recoveryRoofVent ® condens:Roof ventilation unit with condensing gas boiler

On the onehand, the dry, professional side, but on the other, there is something more charming: namely,Hoval’s “We are family- culture”.The “Ventilation” team gave us a prime exampleof this when they held their workshop on currenttechnology and marketing in Hungary from 16to 18 June 2004. With the help of our partnerThermotrade Kft., the team organized this eventat the medieval castle of Sümeg. The supporting program to the event was basedaround this backdrop. With deployment of a mounted troop (whatwould Hungary be without horsemen?), completedwith the damsel of the castle and squires, the best salesmen were knighted, and wentdown on bended knee as tradition dictates. The workshop finished in Budapest, wherecoincidence played a role as well, adding amagnificent finishing touch to the proceedings:During dinner on a restaurant boat on theDanube, directly down from the illuminatedFisherman’s Bastion, by the Chain Bridge, aspectacular fireworks display started, much tothe surprise of all the diners, not least the Hovalteam. This wasn’t our work, though – Budapestis celebrating the 150 th anniversary of the ChainBridge. But it impressed everybody. 8 Hoval Insights, November 2004Oil condensing boilers = Hoval MultiJet ®8 years ago, the first oil condensingboiler went onto the test bench. „Atthat time the whole industry laughedat us.“ (Quote Günther Köb, Head ofthe Oil Systems Product Line of theHoval Group). Today this innovationis experiencing a boom, while themarket for conventional oil-firedboilers is on the decline.Due to a number of factors, oil-fired boilers’chances were rated pretty badly until just a fewyears ago. The issue of natural resources hasbecome an object of political speculation, andthe Kyoto agreement with all its variousimplications has made the subject of thecombustion of oil a hot potato. The heatingindustry was not willing to put a lot ofdevelopment potential in this area of heatingtechnology necessary to realize drasticreductions of energy consumption andemissions.Anyway, Hoval tried it on it’s own.The Hoval MultiJet ®From the technical point ofview, an unique novelty, asynonym for condensingboilers. Field-tested insustained operation. We understand that thisboiler is carefully examinedby the public. But itpasses all scrutings - eventhat of a highly sensitive„parlour-tiger“.The basic idea for the new construction of anoil condensing boiler had been on ice at theHoval labs for the past 10 years, as it failed inthe testing stage due to the materials availableat the time.In 1996 the Hoval MultiJet ® was given itsbaptism of fire, in the truest sense of the word:A floor-standing condensing boiler with theassociated self-cleaning effect, a very high rateof utilization and a compact design (only 48 x48 cm of space required!).It achieved an energy saving of 20 %, comparedto its conventional counterparts. That was evenmore than we had expected. After an initial period of hesitance, the marketenthusiastically accepted the Hoval MultiJet ®and launched oil condensing boilers to asuccess beyond everyone’s assumptions.Oil condensing boilers put to the test“Stiftung Warentest”, the German consumerorganization, awarded the Hoval MultiJet ® therating “sehr gut” (very good) for the mostimportant assessment criteria: energy utilization, safety, finish, service, maintenance. There is, however, another kind of test thatspeaks volumes: practical use. Over years ofconstant operation, the Hoval MultiJet ® hasshown that it can run flawlessly on fuel oil (extra-light)up to 2000 ppm; just as on sulfurreducedfuel oil up to 50 ppm. All parts that comeinto contact with exhaust gases are made fromhigh-grade stainless steel, therefore no corrosioncan occur. The need for cleaning and annualmaintenance is kept down to a minimum. Anyskepticism about the new technological concepts(vertical burners, jet inserts, condensation)is dispelled by the industry press, inround terms: “Forget the past ... it works withouta hitch.” (a quote from “Sanitär + Heizungstechnik”magazine 7/2004, p. 40 ff).The price is a paradoxThe price of the Hoval MultiJet ® is noticeablyhigher than that of a conventional low-temperatureboiler. If, however, the higher purchasecosts are set against the amount of energysaved, then the result is enlightening: Dependingon country-specific fuel oil prices, theboiler starts to save money after between fiveand seven years. As of that point in time, theextra investment you have made yields interestof approx. 20 % per year. The graph belowprovides a summary of this:Energy costs saved (EUR)for each year (cumulative)In this calculation we have, however, onlyconsidered the cost of fuel oil. It is important toadd that overall power consumption for theboiler (including burner, controls and heatingcirculation pump) is some 50 % lower than fora competing product of the same value. Thuswe see that cost is all relative, and this is true inmore ways than one: it is not just cash that issaved, but our environment and its resourcesas well.MultiJet - the highest-interest investment aroundAmortization of additional costs after 5 yearsAs of this time, the extra investment yieldsinterest of approx. 20 % per year.VVYears

She is the fastest paddlesteamerin Europe (some say even the whole world), and is the pride of theLake Lucerne fleet. The„Gallia“: Length: 62 m; width: 14,5 m; waterdisplacement: 388 t; load capacity: 67,5 t.Equipment: Compass, rate-of-turn indicator, radar, machine telegraph, electronic rudder unitwith emergency steering, GPS, chronometer fornavigation in fog .If the furnace falls, the ship can use the residualsteam to reach the nearest station from any pointon the lake. And itdoesn’t even imagine to ...Lake Lucerne is not just known for its associationswith William Tell and Swiss history ingeneral: it has also played an important role interms of the old trade channels running alongthe north-south route through Europe. Thebarrier presented by the peaks of the Alpsblocked the route until 1230, when a mountaintrail was finally constructed on Mount St. Gotthard.Merchandise was carried through the passon mules, but the Swiss lakes had to be crossedbefore (or after) that – and so shipbuildingbegan. Real prosperity, however, only came withthe opening of the Gotthard Road in 1830, whichheralded the arrival of tourism. Not long after that, steamships such as the“Stadt Luzern” were proudly traversing the lake.In the modern era of the 20 th century, the dieselengine replaced coal-driven paddle-steamers,but affection for the old ships remained. 10 Hoval Insights, November 2004Quickly picked up and put down .....Austria bikesIn Austria there is the “RC Hoval” cycle club, which annually organizes a tour for enthusiasticcyclists among our clients. This year it took place from 17 to 20 June, witha 530 km route starting at Hoval in Marchtrenkin Upper Austria and passing through its variousquarters and landscapes right up to the Slovakborder and then, crossing Lower Austria, toVienna via the Wine District. The route wasn’t chosen at random. It took theparticipants into a region that so far has remaineduntouched by international masstourism, and which has a rich display of cultureand natural beauty to offer. For art enthusiasts, the famous 13 m-high late Gothic altar in Kefermarktleaves an unforgettable impression, whilenature-lovers will cherish memories of theKamp-March-Thaya nature reserve, and for theromantics, Hardegg and Riegersburg are realfairytale castles. The RC Hoval cyclists could experience that andmuch more along their tour, well guarded byescort vehicles ready for assistance and “emergency transportation” whenrequired. If you are also interested in joining the RC Hoval, Hoval Austria will be glad tohave you (ladies are particularly welcome!). Thistiny creature is 10 cm long and 60 g in weight -but when it grows up it will, like its Daddy, boasta weight of 220 kg and a length of 1.5 m.Its Mummy has just turned 70, so she’s still quitea spring chicken – if well looked-after, she canbe expected to live to 180.The “Züri-Zoo” is the only zoo in Europe to havehad regular success at coaxing theseendangered primeval creatures to enjoyintimate moments that have actually yieldedresults. In the last 15 years they have hadsuccess with 50 tortoise babies! A Hoval rotaryheat exchanger has also played its part in thishappy event, by helping to create the rightclimate in the enclosure, thereby recreating thefeel of the Galapagos islands.P.S.: In the next issue of “Insights”, we plan toreport more on this new product (the rotary heatexchanger of course, not the baby tortoise).A positive working climateThe working climate at Hoval in Vaduz seemsideal: our banana plant on the 3 rd floor of thedevelopment building has not just blossomed, but has even borne fruit, which tastes exquisite.Unfortunately that will be the end of it,because banana plants die after reproducing. It has, however, granted us a few offshoots, which have since grown to huge proportions andwill provide us with some consolation for theloss.?Could this possiblyturn intoanother baby –or is it just a pingpong ball? We know the answer:it really is a tortoise egg.Marketing in days of yoreHow sales were made 50 years ago is demonstratedby an anecdote that we recentlydredged up: With the aim not just of sellingcookers (the forerunners to today’s centralheating systems, patented by GustavOspelt, the founder ofour group of companies)as professionallyas possible, but alsodemonstrating them inaction, customerswere carefully trainedto use them on-site,particularly in terms ofregulating the idealsupply of fresh air - byno means the dishesshould be carbonized.Herr Eugster (one ofour top salesmenback then) did noteven hesitate to standat the cooker andamaze housewives by creating golden-browncakes, which turned some of them pale.By Appointment toHer Majesty the QueenBoiler Manufacturers & EngineersHoval Limited, NewarkDo you remember our article in the last issue of„Insights“ about Hoval UK and the „By Appointmentto Her Majesty the Queen“ symbol, indicatingthat Hoval has been distinguished as asupplier to the Queen? We have discovered afew more interesting details about that:Only one representative of a branch of businessis allowed to carry this badge of honour, andeven then not forever, but only for a limitedperiod of time. I has to be renewed at regularintervals - or not, should Her Majesty not findthe product to her satisfaction. Nor is thedistinction awarded to the company as whole, but instead to a certain individual in thecompany, who is responsible for ensuring thatquality is maintained (in our case that person isRoy D. Martin). Furthermore, the delivery isbound to be for the Queen’s private property, exclusively – even the next of kin such as PrinceCharles would not count, in this case …We suppose that our sales staff will nowprobably be breathing a sigh of relief - atthe thought that this cooker is no longer produced...Hoval central heating cooker from 1942. It heatedthe whole house. For the first time, the efficientfunction of a Hoval product was confirmed by acertificate from the Swiss Federal Laboratoriesfor Materials Testing and Research (EMPA).
