Reflections
The usual period allocated for a presidential review of progress is 100 days but
time and the Chatterbox deadline wait for no one! So here goes.
After a quarter of a century in Rotary it was bound to happen one day and
the fact that my installation as President of the Rotary Club of Belper and Duffield
took place on American Independence Day no doubt has great symbolic significance
– but I’ll leave you all to work out what it might be! I am however privileged
to be the President of such an involved and friendly club and to have the support
of such a hard working team. Evidence of both was to be found at the Hand-over
Barbeque held in Paul and Hazel’s lovely garden. The weather smiled on us, the
grub was great and the company congenial. Thanks to everyone involved.
The Club’s programme so far has been varied, interesting and instructive.
David Ashley has given us a preview of his year as District Governor and the support
he would like from the Club. I am sure we will back him 100%! PDG Roger Pursey
gave us a talk on REMIT (Rotary Eliminates Malaria in Tanzania) a worthy project,
but with many questions unanswered. On 8th August we were visited by DG
Gordon McGlone and his wife Lorraine. Gordon told us of his plans for the year,
promised us a lively and entertaining conference under the banner ‘Always look on
the bright side of life’ (no one sang) and reminded us of RI President Kalyan
Banerjee’s mystic motto for the year ‘Reach within to embrace humanity’. I think it
may be no bad thing to have a slogan for the year whose meaning is not entirely
straightforward if it encourages thought in members as to how Rotarians can best
help Rotary to achieve its objectives.
Sheilagh’s friends Joyce and David Hart gave us a Round Britain quiz
accompanied by glorious pictures – a quiz which Sheila and team proceeded to win!
If there had been prizes, questions might have been asked! Finally, John Scotney
boldly went where no publicity officer has dared to go before and asked members
what they thought of various publications – club, district and national. I think it true
to say that the Club came out pretty well. Well done John!
To sum up – a good start, but the best is yet to come?
Installation of President Martin Drake
July 4th 2011
As would be expected, there was a good turnout of both members and their
Rotary regalia for this special meeting. The Master of Ceremonies this year was
Vernon Barnes and he steered us through the meeting with a firm but gentle hand,
starting with Grace from David Soul. After battling with whole roasted poussin
followed with hot chocolate fondant (= brownie!), we had the final Loyal Toast, with
prompting from the MC, from retiring President David Harris.
Foundation Chair David Soul proposed the toast to Rotary International and the
company was then ready for President David’s Valedictory Address. However,
Secretary John Scotney broke into the planned programme to report on two items
of interest to the club from the District Handover Dinner held on the 1st July. First,
he was able to pass onto President David a ‘President’s Citation’ awarded by RI in
recognition of the numerous activities carried out by the club in the last Rotary Year.
Secondly, he was delighted to show members the District Club Bulletin Shield which
had been awarded to the club for the third time in the last six years. Back to the
programme, the full version of the Valedictory Address has been printed in the
May/June Chatterbox which was distributed at the end of the Installation meeting.
The formal part of the meeting then took place. David Harris ceremoniously
handed over his chain of office to Martin Drake, thus officially assuming the position
of President 2011/2012 and in the absence of Martin’s sponsor to club membership
in 1992, John Scotney presented the Expression of Goodwill. The new President
then presented David with the IPP’s Badge and jewels and proceeded to invest
Graham Wright with the Badge of Office as SVP.
Two of the Honorary Officers were standing down, David Henson as Treasurer
and John Scotney as Secretary. After thanking them for their many years of service
to the club, President Martin welcomed their replacements Peter James and Nick
Blurton.
In a brief address, President Martin thanked all those members of the club
who had agreed to take on the various roles within the club structure. He was sad
that the club was losing two of its lady members; Vicky Horwood because of family
commitments and Chris True who had now moved back home near York. Chris, near
to tears, thanked the club for the way we had welcomed her into our midst and we
wish her all the best and hope she finds another Rotary Club locally where she can
continue her fellowship and service.
Finally, the newly installed President closed the meeting by proposing the
Toast – Rotary and Peace the World over.
Presidents’ Handover Barbeque
Sunday 10th July 2011
There has been a tradition of holding a
Summer Club Barbeque and this year it
was revived when Paul and Hazel Taylor
kindly offered to make their garden
available for David Harris and Martin
Drake to host a celebration of their
handover.
In a period of unsettled
weather, we managed to hit a fine,
warm and sunny day and bearing side
dishes and desserts and
some carrying spare tables
and chairs, the members
and some friends of the club descended
on Sunday lunchtime upon Abbeyfields Close in Darley Abbey. Treasurer Peter
James had placed himself strategically near the entrance to the gardens, like a toll
booth, and collected the contributions as the visitors arrived out of breath after
climbing a steep flight of steps.
Groups of people were scattered around the expansive garden. We were
strategically sited near the barbeque at the side of the house so could keep an eye
on the proceedings and be amongst the first to savour the various delights on offer.
Drinks were available from the kitchen and soon there was a steady hum of chatter
from around the garden interrupted only by frequent visits to the kitchen to get the
delicious hot smoky steaks, chicken pieces and sausages and the accompanying
bread and salads. Then it was time to move on to desserts - fruit salad, cheesecakes,
fruit pies and crumble, trifles and a cheese board. The PR officer wandered round
the garden photographing the various groups and a selection is shown on page 2.
The only concession to Rotary formality was when President Martin rose
to thank everybody who had played a part in making the occasion so enjoyable and
the company began to disperse. On behalf of everybody there, a big thank you to
the two ‘Presidents’, David (and Ann) and Martin and to Paul and Hazel for so
generously opening up their garden. Treasurer Peter James has since reported that
the event made a surplus of some £200 which will go to support our various charities.
Meeting – 11th July
The Life and Times of Alan Widdowson
(with supporting act by his damned computer)
by Alan Widdowson
Before I report on Alan’s talk I must remind myself of a promise I made to myself
years ago and that is to spend my life as a Computer Illiterate. During Alan’s
very interesting talk he had to wrestle with his computer which was supposed to
provide his notes but much to the amazement of himself and my fellow Rotarians
insisted in having a mind of its own throughout the evening.
He started by introducing his wife Hilary who was known to all but what was
not generally known was that Hilary and Alan first met through a lonely hearts club.
It has been a most successful and fruitful marriage resulting in them becoming
grandparents.
Alan was born at Chaddesden and he generally enjoyed school and quoted
many pranks which usually ended with his backside feeling the cane. He graduated
to grammar school and his first job was with the Inland Revenue which lasted four
weeks! In 1959 he joined Bemrose, the famous printing works and was an estimator
during which he met and became a firm friend of the famous mountaineer, David
Green.
Alan left Bemrose for a brief spell to work at a plastic welding company where
he sustained severe burns to his hand which prompted a return to Bemrose, in time
to assist in a visit to the factoy by Margaret Thatcher and her husband. During this
time, he became secretary to the company social club which involved him in
arranging various events, visits and activities.
He became a sales representative and extensively travelled the country and he
also became involved when the company expanded by acquiring a packaging
business which catered for many of the top famous brand names. While the
regular fight with his computer was taking place, in order to fill the time he
mentioned how proud he was to obtain the autograph of his idol, Beckman.
After 41 years with Bemrose he was made
redundant and officially retired from business in 2008.
Alan’s talk concluded with a successful ending when he
switched off that damned computer after which he was
thanked for an entertaining talk flavoured with humour
and a computer that has taught him to stay clear of
modern technology!
Meeting - 18th July
Club Council and Business Meeting
Council approved the following donations:
1. A donation of £200 to WUKSART the water search and rescue team.
2. A grant of £200 towards a model of the Belper Meadows Edge which had been
pledged earlier subject to the receipt of a Lottery grant.
3. A further donation of £100 to EMVAST (Belper First Responders) from the
proceeds of the barbeque.
4. A donation of £250 to the Horn of Africa Disaster Appeal from the Club’s
Emergency Fund. (See letter on page 16).
Here are some notes by Youth Opportunities Chair Hilary Surga from the
Business meeting:
Booklets for Youth Opportunities have been ordered and will be delivered to John
Norreys.
Young Photographer Competition - Primary Schools in Duffield Belper and Milford have
been visited and provided with posters. St Johns, Belper and the Meadows School, Duffield
may be interested. The themes are Olympic Dream or Olympic Spirit. Should any schools
take part then entries have to be with the club by Feb 1st 2012. It was suggested we involve
the Drop In and Massif Project.
The Young Chef Competition - Posters and my contact details have been left at Ecclesbourne
School and Belper School. I will investigate the possibility of establishing an Interact
Group there and consider ways that the initiative has continued impact.
Outdoor adventure opportunities - I am in contact with someone who is qualified in this
subject who would be willing to run an activity which might appeal to The Drop In and The
Massif Project if transport and fees could be funded by the Club.
Cycling Proficiency - This was well received again this year and will continue next summer.
Christmas shoe boxes will continue to be collected by Club members and Mock interviews
will continue to take place for students at Ecclesbourne School led by John Norreys.
Mentoring is continuing with students at Belper School however there is an issue with
training new Mentors as the DEBP is no longer involved.
Another suggestion was that it would be a good idea to encourage the Massif Project
and Drop In to have another opportunity to interact in some way, so food for thought.
Further to this it was suggested that representatives from these groups could attend some
Rotary sessions as "friends of Rotary" which would provide more helpful links and help with
planning activities for them.
It was agreed that we would defer involvement with The Young Speaker Competition as
we have a quite a few initiatives to manage at the moment.
David Ashley raised the subject of the Olympics 2012 where schools are invited to
register with "Get Set" through the Olympic Organisation. There may be advantages for
tickets for the Olympics. Also a suggestion was made about the possibility of our club having
some involvement with The Duke of Edinburgh Award.
Meeting - 25th July
The Route to becoming a DG and the
Club Responsibilities
by Dave Ashley – District Governor Elect
D ave began by telling us that in the past most of the District’s DG’s had come
from Nottinghamshire so it was indeed an honour for Derbyshire to provide
Gordon McGlone this year and Dave next year. In fact the Rotary Club of Belper had
only provided a DG once before in 1935/7.
To become a DG takes four years of hard and sometimes frustrating work.
However the purpose of Dave’s talk was to make the club and members aware of
their commitment. So what exactly are these?
The first event will be the District Assembly on Saturday 28th April 2012 at
Nottingham Trent University with an attendance of over 300. Its purpose is to allow
all Rotarians the opportunity to meet the incoming DG and District Team, and learn
about the Rotary theme for the next year together with other useful information.
Our club will be responsible for acting as stewards for Assembly. It is hoped that all
members will be able to join Dave on this day and for club officers and committee
chairmen to attend their sessions. The assembly starts at 8.30am with people
arriving from 7.30am; as stewards, we will need to there for that time. We will have
to staff the car park and the buildings, directing people to their various destinations
during the event.
The next major event is the District Conference at Southport on the 5th -
7th October 2012. Once again the club will need to act as stewards for the weekend.
We will need as many people as possible. Also some of our neighbouring clubs have
said they will help if needed. Accommodation is available at the Ramada Hotel,
part of the Conference venue, which should making the duties less onerous.
Husbands, wives and partners are all welcome to assist.
The third major responsibility will be that of providing transport for Dave
and Gail to the various Club Charter celebrations etc. they are required to attend.
In total there are 55 Charter nights and a similar number of Club Visits, 110 in total.
Excluding the visits to this club and those Dave will drive himself to these amounts
to around three trips for each Rotarian. Paul Taylor will be co-ordinating this task.
This will be an exciting time for us all and the publicity, which is in the
capable hands of John Scotney, should do the Club a world of good.
John Horwood proposed the vote of thanks and I am sure that we all wish
Dave the very best for his year of office.
Meeting – 1st August
Rotary International Project to tackle
Malaria in Tanzania
9
by PDG Roger Percy
Roger was introduced to the meeting
by Rtn Gail Ashley, organiser for the
evening.
The speaker started his talk by
stating the size of the problem that
Malaria is in Tanzania with 3,000 deaths
each day mostly of young children under 5,
whose immune system to this disease is
still weak, and also of pregnant women.
Rotary International has set up a Project
activated by Rtn Brian Still to combat this
disease which carries a huge loss of life.
Roger then described how the Malaria Mosquito spreads its disease
particularly in swamps and other stagnant pools of water and attempts are now
being made to fill them in as part of a Country Health Programme.
Education is a major issue to understand the fatal risks that are all too
common given the nature of the territory and work is being applied to this on a
wider scale across the villages and towns in Tanzania.
Mosquito Nets are the main form of protection from the mosquito and
Rotary is using this approach by supplying these nets along with education to save
lives. As nets only cost £2.50 it seems there is an opportunity to make a substantial
impact on this sad loss of life and Rotary welcome support for this project.
The vote of thanks to the speaker was given by Rtn Peter James on behalf
of the club members.
Rtn Ron Giffin
More details about this project can be obtained by visiting the following website:
Meeting – 8th August
District Governor’s Visit
Gordon McGlone is our District Governor for this Rotary Year and we were
pleased to welcome him on a club visit. President Martin Drake introduced him
as ‘Our Scouse Charmer’- and so a welcome note of informality was set for the
evening. Although most male members had arrived with dressed necks there were
some who came ‘as usual’. Gordon confessed that he had set out tieless, but
brought one along with him just in case, which he had hastily donned on arrival! We
female members who sometimes have something of a dilemma as to what might
be suitable for the sauna that is the Lion’s dining room could gloat at this new set
of sartorial choices that has opened up for the chaps.
Gordon introduced the theme for this year as a challenge to us to extend our
natural concern and care for our own families into helping others, hence ‘Reach
within to embrace Humanity’.
There was a feeling that bringing a final end to the scourge that has been polio
might not be achievable due to the political situation in the Middle East. However,
Gordon pointed out that until eradication is achieved the huge vaccination
programs will have to continue, sapping resources which could be transferred to
other projects like malaria.
Gordon went on from this to say that as the economic squeeze tightened he
expected that clubs would wish to focus increasingly on their own communities and
he urged us to follow our local press to see where help could be offered.
Shelter and Aquaboxes were being sent to refugee camps in the Horn of Africa
in the current famine and he asked that our contributions be directed towards
those projects. Shelter box has been mentioned on the news, but alas no mention
of Rotary.
Gordon moved on to talk about membership. We are growing worldwide but
not in the UK. He felt that it was time for a new club to be formed in our district -
inevitably with a younger age profile. The Rotary Roadshow in Nottingham has
been a great success and Gordon would like to see similar membership drives in the
smaller towns in the District.
Finally he gave a brief ad for the Scarborough Conference - a £4 million refit for
the Spa Centre and Fireworks! He showed that he had done his club homework by
producing a photo of Vernon Barnes from 1986 and signing off with ‘Always Look
on the Bright Side of Life’ (always Vernon’s motto)
Sheilagh Harnan
There are a couple of photographs from this meeting on page 19.
Meeting – 15th August
Photographic ‘Round Britain Quiz’
by Joyce and David Hart
PP Sheilagh was the Activity Organiser for this Guest Evening and she had invited
her friends, Joyce and David Hart from the Chesterfield Photographic Society,
to come along and entertain us. The evening did not begin too auspiciously; both
the screens supplied by the Lion were inoperable and more bodies had arrived for
the meeting than had ordered meals! Fortunately, Secretary Nick was able to dash
home to bring along his screen and the Lion kitchen rose to the challenge and
everybody was fed.
President Martin reminded the members that it had been Eric Naylor’s
funeral earlier in the day and that the club had been well represented at the service
at Markeaton Crematorium (there is an obituary of Eric on page 15).
Sheilagh then introduced her speakers by saying that they needed no
introduction as they had visited the club a couple of times previously to entertain
us. Joyce explained that their previous photographic quizzes had used photographs
taken locally; now, they had spread their wings and ventured out and about in Great
Britain. They had organised the photographs into three groups – Castles, Places
with Rivers, and Statues and the scoring got a bit complicated with points for both
the River/Statue and the associated town or city. Apparently, we were to be the
guinea pigs for their new project!
The members and their guests organised themselves into small groups and
the show got under way. David had the whole slideshow set up on the computer
along with an atmospheric sound track to accompany it through an audio system
and it proceeded smoothly with Joyce just breaking in at intervals to remind us
about the scoring system. The answers were delivered in a similar way and we all
marked our own papers. Sheilagh won with 32 out of a possible 65 and Doreen and
John came second with 31.
John Scotney thanked Joyce and David for a most entertaining evening and
complimented them on the excellent quality of the photographs and all the hard
work that had gone into producing such a slick performance. He was particularly
taken with their choice of music, claiming that his scoring had been adversely
affected by paying too much attention to the tunes!
Editor - Joyce and David have let me have a couple of photographs from their
collection to use in CHATTERBOX. One, a statue, is on the front cover and the other
is on page 19. Their identities are shown at the bottom of this page.
Meeting - 22nd August
Rotary Communications
by John Scotney
I n the absence of the planned speaker, who was unable to be with us on this
particular date, John Scotney came to the rescue with a PowerPoint presentation
on Rotary Communications.
John commenced his presentation with a survey of Club, District, National
and International Rotary media and invited members to indicate how much they
used these various media. Starting at Club level, The Bulletin Board and Chatterbox
were very well received and read by all members and the Club Directory was
regarded as a useful source of reference. By contrast the Club website seemed to
be very little accessed by club members. Moving on to District level media, most
members read the Rotary Review magazine and a minority used the District
Directory but the District website and District Database were not used by most
members. At the National level, few members showed interest in the RIBI magazines
and the national website was little used if at all.
A lively discussion then followed on the merits of various methods of
Rotary communication. John Scotney outlined the development of the club newsletter
which was originally typed and photocopied by Vernon Barnes and Jack
Watson and issued fortnightly. In 1997 this developed into a monthly Chatterbox
produced on computer by various members and in July 2003 Chatterbox appeared
in A5 magazine format. This has developed into the very professionally presented
magazine which has won District awards in 2005/6, 2007/8 and 2010/11. It was
suggested by one member that Chatterbox should be distributed to public places
to raise awareness of Club activities. Others expressed reservations on the grounds
that some of the information in the magazine such as financial accounts, etc., and
possibly this article, were for Club consumption only. John Scotney felt that Rotary
Review and RIBI magazines were more waiting room friendly. It was generally
agreed that Chatterbox could be placed in local libraries.
Several club members expressed the view that the Club website was
probably of more use to outsiders wishing to find out about the club, but John
Scotney pointed out that it was a very useful source of updates for Club members
and for information on events beyond the timescale of the Bulletin.
There was a wide diversity of opinion on the usefulness of the District
Directory. It was pointed out that production of the directory was a laborious
process and District was considering phasing it out and making more use of the
District database which can be accessed on the web. The District Directory would
not be of any interest to members who were purely Club orientated as all the
Belper Club information was contained in the Club Directory. However, some ....
Pass it on......!
ATM PIN Number Reversal - Good to Know !!
If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM
machine, you can notify the police by entering your PIN # in reverse. For example,
if your pin number is 1234, then you would put in 4321. The ATM system recognizes
that your PIN number is backwards from the ATM card you placed in the machine.
The machine will still give you the money you requested, but unknown to the
robber, the police will be immediately dispatched to the location. All ATM’s carry
this emergency sequencer by law.
This information was recently publicised by Crime Stoppers; however it is
seldom used because people just don't know about it. Please pass this along to
everyone.
ICE
(In Case of Emergency)
This is something else that is good to know and we did try to promote it in
CHATTERBOX a few years ago. The idea is to enter the letters ‘ICE’ in your
mobile phone memory along with the telephone number of somebody you would
wish to be contacted in case of a serious accident. If you are involved in an incident
and become unconscious and the police or paramedics manage to recover your
mobile phone, then your next of kin can be contacted immediately, saving time and
effort by the emergency services.
How many club members have set up an ICE contact on their mobile phone?
Shouldn’t you get on and do it now?
continued from page 12.
members were very much in favour of retaining the District Directory since the
Attention was drawn to a new District website www.nottsderbyrotary.org
which is aimed at the general public. There was also some debate about the use of
social media such as Facebook, Tweets and Blogs to attract younger Rotarians but
we were over-running the time by now and the discussion was drawn to a close.
Members felt that the discussion had been most useful and Sheilagh
Harnan proposed a vote of thanks to John for an excellent presentation.
District Governor’s Newsletter for August 2011
Already we are in August and the past five weeks have passed so quickly. I have
now completed official visits to sixteen Clubs, with two being joint meetings. All
the Clubs have made me most welcome and there have been many questions, most
of which have been constructive. One striking fact is the determination by most of
the Clubs to increase membership and already we have seen new names on APAC,
but I do know of some new members who have not yet been entered on the system
so can I ask secretaries to keep APAC up to date so I can write and welcome these
new members. Please appoint someone in your Club to act as a mentor for these
new members so they can become involved in activities and learn what Rotary is
about.
I have attended also 11 Social events including the District 22 Inner Wheel
Induction. I would like to thank the ladies of Inner Wheel for making Lorraine and
me so welcome and I wish District Chairman Sue Curley well for her year. Whilst
attending the Rotary Club of Ripley’s Songs of Praise I was introduced to Rotarian
George Lowe who has been a member of the Club for nearly 60 years. At the grand
age of 98 he is still attending meetings and is as enthusiastic as ever about the
organization. I therefore applied for a long service award for him and I presented
him with it together with a personal letter of congratulations from RI President
Kalyan.
These Social events are very enjoyable and help me to get to know the Clubs
better; Lorraine and I will try to join you for some of these but remember there are
only 365 days in a year. Please will you let me have a copy of your newsletters or
bulletin so I can see what you are planning and if I can fit any functions into the diary
I will do so.
I have sent out a separate appeal for the disaster in the Horn of Africa, where
millions of people are on the move and many thousands dying. Please do all you can
to help these people whether it is by supporting Shelter Box, Aquabox or donations
to the D.E.C.
District sports events start in September with the outdoor bowls on the 4th. I
look forward to seeing you there and hope the weather is as kind as last year.
September is also New Generations month and I can see from all the Club Assembly
reports that there is a lot of activity planned for the year in this area. Please
re-establish links with the schools as soon as they re-open. In just a few weeks the
Charter season will begin, I look forward to attending these as they are a celebration
of Rotary Service in your area.
Hope your Conference Registration form is winging its way to Registration
Officer David Power as the cost of registering increases as from 23rd August!
Enjoy Rotary and remember, “Always look on the bright side of life”
PP Eric Naylor PHF
Died 24th July 2011 aged 87 years
I have known Eric and Margaret Naylor since 1958
when we moved into Broadway, Duffield. Eric
introduced me into Rotary in 1991 and in 1996 he
became President when an idea of his to produce a
Festival of Youth came to fruition. I was Eric’s Senior
Vice-President and those in the Club at the time
will remember that there was a 3-line whip and everyone had to be available for
the day! It all went very well on the day; the sun shone, the District Governor and
Lord Lieutenant came and the highlight in the evening for the young crowd was the
group music concert.
Apart from Rotary, Eric spent much of his spare time painting, playing the
piano, on the golf course and sometimes, in conjunction with Vernon Barnes,
producing cinefilms before the days of digital camcorders.
Eric served in the Army during World War 2 and took part in the D-day
landings. His early career was as Branch Manager at the Woolwich Building Society
and he then went on to become a partner with W. Thompson Estate Agents in
Derby. Our thoughts go to Margaret and his three children, Janice, Stephen and
David at this time.
John Lowe
It was when Eric and I discovered we were both members of the then Institute of
Amateur Cinematographers that we got together on video projects. The first of
these was a film looking at care in later life, made in conjunction with P.P. Derrick
Smith and Dr. O’Flanahan of Duffield; later Eric and I received permission to film at
Kedleston Hall when it was closed, as part of a film of the Belper area which was
then sent with French commentary to a Rotary Club in France with which we were
trying to form links in David Collard’s year. I’ve continued to keep in touch with him
and Margaret ever since those days and enjoyed the use of his editing suite and
numerous gadgets!
Eric was instrumental in organising (or overseeing!) the massive Festival of Youth
on Thornton’s field in Derwent Street during his year as President, an event which
caused many of us a certain amount of stressful amusement at the time, with Radio
FM and a fairground taking part in addition to the other attractions. It was due to
the tremendous amount of assistance that Michael Thornton also gave to us he
was made an Honorary Member of this club.
Dear Mr James,
Your Dec Donation Number: 0110001300
16
11 August 2011
Thank you so much for your life saving donation of £250 to the DEC's East Africa
Crisis Appeal. This is very generous and your support is hugely appreciated.
Your donation will help provide vital aid to children and families caught up in this
terrible ongoing emergency. This is the worst drought East Africa has experienced
for 60 years and as well as the terrible levels of malnutrition, we are seeing
increased levels of life threatening diseases such as measles and diarrhoea. Thanks
to your support, our 14 member charities are working hard to save lives in some of
the worst affected areas
Our members are running emergency feeding clinics providing vital food and
supplements to the severely malnourished, many of whom are young children. We
are also digging wells and providing clean water to communities and vaccinating
against diseases - vital in stopping this emergency getting significantly worse.
However a donation to the DEC is not just a quick fix. Our member agencies are also
looking at the long term effects this disaster is having. Many people have lost their
only source of income or entire livelihood. Your support is allowing us to work with
communities to provide vital support and supplies needed to start over, meaning
people can rebuild their lives.
On behalf of the DEC, all member charities and the people of East Africa, thank you.
Your generosity really is saving lives.
Yours sincerely,
Brendan Gormley
