9From ICT use to moreeffective teach<strong>in</strong>gTh<strong>is</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al chapter describes five ways for schools and teachers toget more out of us<strong>in</strong>g ICT <strong>in</strong> the classroom.The 2011 Monitor has shown that there are solid foundations for us<strong>in</strong>g ICT<strong>in</strong> every sector of education. Most teachers believe that they have goodICT skills, and schools have one computer for every five pupils. Virtuallyall school computers have Internet access, and the number of classroomsequipped with an <strong>in</strong>teractive whiteboard <strong>is</strong> grow<strong>in</strong>g rapidly. More andmore digital learn<strong>in</strong>g materials are becom<strong>in</strong>g available, and schools areclearly eager to make greater use of ICT both for knowledge transfer andknowledge construction.A grow<strong>in</strong>g number of teachers are mak<strong>in</strong>g use of computers. If theforecasts are to be believed, virtually every teacher will be us<strong>in</strong>g ICT <strong>in</strong>their lessons <strong>in</strong> five years’ time, and they will be do<strong>in</strong>g so with greater<strong>in</strong>tensity and <strong>in</strong> more varied ways. ICT <strong>is</strong> no longer merely an optionalteach<strong>in</strong>g aid; it <strong>is</strong> fast becom<strong>in</strong>g one of the fundamental build<strong>in</strong>g blocks ofeducation.Despite all th<strong>is</strong>, teachers are not adopt<strong>in</strong>g ICT <strong>in</strong> their lessons as rapidlyas they and school managers had expected. The potential that ICT offers toimprove teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>is</strong> often left unexplored. In terms of the <strong>Four</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Balance</strong>model, that potential lies <strong>in</strong> enhanc<strong>in</strong>g the relationship between thepedagogical use of ICT and improv<strong>in</strong>g the quality of teach<strong>in</strong>g (Figure 9.1).We describe five recommendations for improv<strong>in</strong>g that relationship <strong>in</strong> th<strong>is</strong>chapter.749.1 Adapt support to aimsThe education sector w<strong>is</strong>hes to make greater use of ICT. Op<strong>in</strong>ions differ,however, as to the way ICT should be allowed to <strong>in</strong>fluence teach<strong>in</strong>g,both now and <strong>in</strong> the future. One school <strong>is</strong> prepared to go much furtherthan another <strong>in</strong> that regard. It <strong>is</strong> important to take such differences <strong>in</strong>toaccount if the idea <strong>is</strong> to help schools make more use of ICT. It would be
