PLAZA DE MAYO HAS BEEN A FIXTURE of porteño civic and cultural life for<br />
centuries. Nearby Puerto Madero, on the other hand, was incorporated<br />
officially into the city’s barrio network only in 2007. The two areas reflect<br />
porteños’ reverence for the historic as well as their enthusiastic embrace of<br />
the modern. The Plaza crowns Microcentro, the<br />
capital’s commercial and financial center. From<br />
here the pedestrian mall Calle Florida careens<br />
off in a colorful barrage of bookstores,<br />
boutiques, and street performers, before<br />
terminating at the stately Plaza San Martín —<br />
the steeply sloping anchor of the Retiro<br />
neighborhood. Across Alem Avenue is the stillgrand<br />
English-built train station that shares the<br />
neighborhood’s name, while just south are the<br />
restored redbrick mercantile buildings and<br />
gleaming business parks that comprise <strong>Buenos</strong><br />
<strong>Aires</strong>’ latest reinvention, Puerto Madero.<br />
