General Registration Information<br />
Registration is on a first come, first served basis. All fees are due<br />
at the time <strong>of</strong> registration. All first-time resident registrants must<br />
register in person and provide pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> residency.<br />
All classes will have a minimum enrollment. Classes which have not<br />
met minimum enrollment 48 hours prior to the first class meeting<br />
will be cancelled. Participants will be notified by phone and/or email<br />
in the event <strong>of</strong> a class cancellation due to low enrollment.<br />
Inclement Weather Information: Classes are cancelled when the<br />
<strong>Shaker</strong> schools are closed. Refer to local radio and TV stations or<br />
online at www.shaker.org. You may call our cancellation hotline at<br />
216-491-3143.<br />
Returned check service fee is $15.00.<br />
Refund Policy<br />
Refunds are available for classes or programs up to 72 hours prior<br />
to the first class meeting. A refund claim form must be completed.<br />
Forms can be obtained at the Main Office in Thornton Park or online<br />
at www.shakeronline.com.<br />
In the case <strong>of</strong> trips, money is refunded only if the space can be filled<br />
and if the cancellation is received at least 48 hours in advance.<br />
A full refund will be issued in the event <strong>of</strong> a class cancellation due to<br />
insufficient enrollment.<br />
$10 processing fee will be deducted with the following exceptions:<br />
$5 50+ programs<br />
$25 Camps, and <strong>Fall</strong>/Winter Hockey (except Mighty Mites)<br />
$25 School Age Care<br />
Please allow 3 - 4 weeks for refunds to be processed. If you choose<br />
a Community Life Department computer credit, no processing fee<br />
will be charged.<br />

The <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Shaker</strong> <strong>Heights</strong> is committed to providing access to<br />
<strong>recreation</strong>al programming for all residents. If you or a member <strong>of</strong><br />

than waiting for the last minute to register. At some<br />
point a decision is made whether to cancel a program<br />

Classes are 30 minutes in length and meet weekly for 6 weeks. <strong>Fall</strong> Session II classes do not meet Thanksgiving week.<br />
Starti ng dates/ti mes for both <strong>Fall</strong> Session I and <strong>Fall</strong> Session II are listed in the chart below.<br />
Beginning Learn to Skate classes are held at Thornton Park ice arena for children with litt le or no ice experience. Skati ng skills are<br />
taught using the guidelines <strong>of</strong> United States Figure Skati ng (USFS). Bring your own skates or skate rental is available. Bike or hockey<br />
helmets are mandatory for all Snowplow Sam 1 skaters. Bike helmets are recommended for Basic 1 skaters. Mitt ens or gloves are<br />
recommended for Snowplow/Basic 1 students. Skaters should wear one pair <strong>of</strong> socks or ti ghts. Rental skates not included.<br />
BABY BLADES: Ages 18 mo - 3 yrs. Basic skati ng skills such as sitti ng and standing on the ice, marching and gliding will be taught<br />
for 20 minutes in a fun and positi ve atmosphere followed by story ti me for 10 minutes. Prerequisite: None. Rental skates not<br />
included. Helmets are mandatory.<br />
PRELIMINARY HOCKEY DEVELOPMENT (PHD): Ages 3-5. Class designed to teach basic skati ng and hockey skills to each skater.<br />
Skills include sti ck handling, shooti ng and basic game concepts. See below schedule for days/ti mes. Session I meets 2 ti mes per<br />
week while Session II meets once a week. For Session I, it is recommended that skaters take BOTH the Tuesday and Thursday<br />
classes. Rental skates not included. Pre-requisite: Baby Blades.<br />
ADVANCED LTS: Tuesday nights - If your skater has a desire to pursue competi ti ve skati ng or just wants to pursue a higher level<br />
<strong>of</strong> skati ng, it is ti me to work towards joining the <strong>Shaker</strong> Figure Skati ng Club (SFSC). It is recommended that skaters enter the SFSC<br />
through our Advanced LTS program. Once skaters have passed Basic 4 in our Learn to Skate program, they can move to Advanced<br />
LTS. This class provides an opportunity for advanced instructi on beyond Learn to Skate on full ice. Rental skates not included.<br />

att ended Mighty Mites. Practi ces are both Saturday and Sunday<br />
for an hour each day. Things get exciti ng when games against<br />
other communiti es begin in December or January. We will be<br />
playing cross ice games against other teams as well. This fun<br />
but challenging program will provide young players with a solid<br />
foundati on <strong>of</strong> the essenti al skills required to advance their<br />
level <strong>of</strong> play. Special att enti on will be placed on all aspects <strong>of</strong><br />
forward and backward skati ng (stride, edge control, cross-overs,<br />
stopping, turns and puck control).<br />

StoryWalk TM Project<br />
All ages welcome. Stories are written for pre-school level. Follow<br />
the walking path around Thornton Park where pages <strong>of</strong> an<br />
exciting children’s book will be mounted on stakes along the way.<br />
StoryWalk was designed to combine fitness and literacy in a fun<br />
activity for children. Make sure you dress appropriately. Look<br />
for new stories throughout the year. The StoryWalk Project was<br />
created by Anne Ferguson <strong>of</strong> Montpelier, VT and developed in<br />
collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition<br />
and the Kellogg Hubbard Library. Open from dawn to dusk.<br />
