Generating Hope Amidst TragedyKean University Donor Libby De Grado-Condo loved to watch her late son, Andrew ’83,play the piano. She enjoyed the experience, from not only the perspective of a proudparent, but even more so as a member of the audience. Libby also recalls how muchAndrew enjoyed teaching and sharing his talent with others, which is why upon hispassing, she memorialized him by establishing the Andrew George De Grado EndowedPiano Scholarship, which was awarded to sophomore music major, Jennifer Torres.Andrew De Grado performed internationally, alongside many renowned musicians atacclaimed venues that included Carnegie Hall. “Music was a wonderful world for myson,” recalls Libby. “This scholarship keeps his memory going and helps other youngstudents who have interest in the arts.”Leonard Condo, Jennifer Torres, Libby DeGrado-CondoScholarship Fact: The Andrew GeorgeDe Grado Endowed Piano Scholarship is grantedto an outstanding undergraduate student pursuingstudies in piano performance. Working on a DreamAs a wife and the mother of five, Noelia Garcia already has what many people wouldconsider a full-time job in itself. However, beyond these tremendous responsibilities on thehome front, she finds time to attend Kean University, where she works toward receivinga degree in Spanish with the ultimate goal of becoming a K-12 Spanish teacher. All ofthese circumstances, in addition to her outstanding academic background, earned her theCharlotte W. Newcombe Scholarship for Mature Women.“In my role as a spouse and parent, I have come to develop a high degree of responsibilitybefore the challenging trends of life,” states Noelia. “This unique qualification united with mynatural endurance, is helping me through my Kean University educational program.”During 2007-08, Newcombe Scholarships averaging $2,270 were awarded to 542 women atthirty-one colleges and universities. In the past year, the Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundationhas contributed $35,000 to the Kean University Foundation.Alexander ValenciaScholarship Fact: Established bylongtime Kean University TrusteeJoseph Wilf and his family, thescholarship is annually granted to 12students with a minimum 3.0 GPA.Noelia Garcia and Thomas N. Wilfred, executive director of the Charlotte W. Newcombe FoundationPerforming Musical TherapyAlexander Valencia believes that he is truly blessed. Not only is he an extremely talentedmusician and student at Kean University, but he is also a recipient of the Wilf FamilyFoundation Scholarship. The senior music major, who serves as a volunteer pianoteacher and music director at the United Latin American Pentecostal Church in NorthBergen, New Jersey, has also been a featured artist at numerous on-campus performingarts programs.Valencia, one of the twelve annual Wilf Family Foundation Scholarship awardees, is anadvocate of education, who enjoys sharing the therapeutic benefits of his music withothers. “I believe music is an antidote to stress, daily worries, depression and manyother emotional conditions that affect us everyday,” states Valencia. “My goal is to getall of the available tools to enrich my knowledge and give back to my community.”Scholarship Fact: In the past year,the Charlotte W. Fortifying a Healthy FutureAlbert and Helen Mazurkiewicz Endowed Scholarship recipient David Brzyski is aself-admitted “people person.” This trait has been evident since the day he wasaccepted into the New Jersey Center for Science, Technology and MathematicsEducation (NJCSTME) BS/MS Biotechnology program. The junior history major with certification in secondary education hasembraced his college experience with open arms, serving the campus communityas a peer counselor in the Exceptional Educational Opportunities program, as wellas a participant in multiple student organizations including the African StudentsAssociation and the Pan-African Student Union.Kean University FoundationAnnual Report 200816Scholarship Fact: The Albertand Helen Mazurkiewicz EndowedScholarship is awarded to a studentenrolled in the B.S. in Science andTechnology degree program with aminimum 3.2 GPA.Jonathan believes that earning the Harwood Scholarship is a perfect complement tohis active lifestyle at Kean, as well as his participation in religious volunteer programsbeyond the University. “Being a first-generation college student, my grandmotherand I express our deepest appreciation for Mr. and Mrs. Harwood investing in myeducation,” says Jonathan. “This scholarship motivates me in pursuing my degree,so that I can give back through teaching once I earn my degree.”

Don R. Conklin hastaken on a very active andphilanthropic role withthe Foundation Board ofDirectors, recently makingan extremely generous$1 million donation.Breaking PhilanthropyDown to a ScienceOne of Kean University’s most generous donors, DonR. Conklin is the retired president of Schering-PloughWorldwide Pharmaceutical Operations. Conklin firstbecame involved with Kean in 1993, when he served ashonorary chairman of the University’s capital campaignfor what is now the Nancy Thompson Library. He hastaken on a very active and philanthropic role with theFoundation Board of Directors, recently making anextremely generous $1 million donation.Don R. ConklinUpholding an EducationalPartnership with KeanSusan Kogan has the unique perspective of servingKean University from both the standpoint of an adjunctfaculty member in the Department of Mathematics, anda volunteer, as she sits on the Foundation Board ofDirectors. Due to her recent major gift, Kogan can nowadd philanthropist to the list of contributions.Kogan has been linked with Kean for more than 20 yearsin the areas of both academia and special programs.In addition to teaching mathematics, Kogan has taughtchemistry and physics to Kean students.
