of its own. Getting to know Bahareh’s poetry is getting to know Bahareh. Her poems live inthe same world we do, yet different. A world more colourful, fantastical, and surreal and yetsometimes more grey, isolated and horrific. As the preparations began Sonya had a clear visionof the style she wanted to pursue,FILMING POETRYIntroducing Bahareh, the poet…Hanna MakkiWorking in production in Abu Dhabi over the past few yearshas allowed me to be on various creative projects in the city. However, I must say I’ve never come across anything quite likethis project... Video director Sonya Edelman asked me to joinher on a more than unusual project. We were to create ‘“PoetryVideos”. Our talent: Bahareh. The first meeting was an intriguing one. It started off pleasantly enough with Bahareh warmlywelcoming me into her beautiful home and feeding me the most delicious baklava from Iran.(Bahareh’s coffee table always offers the most amazing selection of treats). Sonya was there, and I was ready to learn more about the project. Bahareh brought some of her many colourfuljournals out, selected a poem and began to read. As the poem came to life, I was distracted bysomething quite unusual. Bahareh writes diagonally. She also doesn’t cross anything out. Ihad to ask, and Bahareh calmly replied,“I’ve talked to another poet, she saw my notebooks and the way I writeand she said ‘where do you take notes, where do you write?’ I said‘notes? I just write”.It’s true. I have seen Bahareh write in her journals and the poetry does seem to just arrive. Eachpage of each journal has a complete poem, yet each journal also has an entire unique theme“I’ve always liked the music video format, it’s like avant garde filmmaking. They reallypush boundaries conceptually, and are ripe with images that lend themselves to producingsomething highly visual and stylistic.” Out of Bahareh’s hundreds of poems, two were chosen:“The Invitation of the Mosque” and an untitled poem which we called “Beach”. The goal: toshoot two poetry videos in one day. We made our preparations and a couple of weeks laterequipment and crew were assembled, and the big shoot came upon us.DAWN AT THE BREAKWATERThe light was perfect. It was clear that this was going to be a good day. This was Bahareh’s firsttime to be the talent on a set and we were all a bit worried about how she would react. Thereis nothing glamorous about filmmaking, and certainly not on the beach. A few hours went bywith Bahareh stepping in and out of the water, walking across the sand, sitting, writing andstanding , and then came Sonya’s call: ‘Great Bahareh, now let’s do it one more time!’ Our setdidn’t offer any comforts yet Bahareh took direction naturally and all in her stride.“Bahareh had to be responsible for her own makeup and wardrobe, we would cut, she wouldfix herself – she was a great sport,” Sonya recalls. We wrapped up at the beach at 11am, butthere were two more locations to go: Hamdan Street and Sheikh Zayed Mosque. The sunlightwouldn’t be right till about 3.00pm, and the sun was going to set by 6.30pm – so there werejust three and a half hours to shoot in both locations including traveling time. It was going tobe tight.FILMING AT THE MOSQUEBahareh arrived at the mosque looking exquisitely elegant in her stunning abaya. As for therest of us – well let’s just say the ones provided didn’t have quite the same effect. “It was niceto have an all female crew, all of us in abayas, it added a certain vibe – but sometimes I triedto move around and get certain shots and I’d trip over – I don’t really know how to move in anabaya!” says Sonya. Filming in the mosque was an overwhelming experience. For Sonya therewas literally too much to film: “You’re going to get great shots even if you don’t know how touse a camera!” Needless to say I had to keep an eye on the time. We loaded in and set off toHamdan Street. With traffic gaining and sun setting, we really had to move it if we were goingto get the shots we wanted.Bahareh in the centre, with Sonya on the left and Hanna on the right.SHOOTING ON HAMDAN STREETWe arrived, but there was nowhere to park… it was peak time in the centre ofAbu Dhabi and we were desperate to find a parking spot close to our destination. We didn’t, and it was time to run – three women, two cameras, tripods, lenses…and Bahareh, our poetess, all the while pulling her suitcase. We arrived at thebusiest junction of the busiest street in the busiest part of the day. As everyonehurriedly set up Bahareh calmly did her hair, touched up her makeup and changedunderneath her abaya, right there in the middle Hamdan Street! We were all inagreement – this was impressive talent. The effect that Sonya wanted to create was of Bahareh alone amidst a worldwhizzing past her. Not easy. Bahareh stood in the middle of the crossing withher eyes closed for a period of fifteen minutes. Cars beeped, pedestrians stared, even the police stopped to check our permits, and through it all Bahareh remainedperfectly still.“She was just elsewhere, she was on a different plane; you know how creativepeople are able to do.” Says SonyaBahareh describes the experience: “I just went on to another space. The space ofwhy I was standing there and where the poetry came from. My different friendsin the poems that I have encountered and the places that I have been to. And so itwas very calming standing in this busy street. I recommend it for therapy.” (Andshe can: Bahareh has a PhD in Psychology). At 6:38pm the sun finally set on our 12hour shoot day. We did it… it was a wrap!Untitled - BeachWhen I pretend to look I stop seeing. There are waves in the ocean with nosound.I breathe in, but with every breath outI release more uncertainty and moredoubt. The breeze felt by the corpse, by thewhite bird and on my skin. The truth held in the breeze. The truth can be warm and beautiful. The breeze today is daunting but notfrightening. It is the same sea I walked in last year. The same shore I marked with my footsteps with my dreams and doubts. But today with every step my foot goesin twice as deep as last year, but comes out with ease. What is the truth in my heavy step.Is it all that I have collected in my heartor all that I’ve released from the web oflies that gives me this weight.Still in search but now I feel each andevery step, each and every breath.Invitation to the MosqueI stepped out of myselfand onto the streetfrom a farI saw a mosqueit was not prayer timebut I felt The Call with closed eyesand open heartI started to breathe in The CallIt was quietso quiet in the gentle mist of the nightbut I know I heardAllahBehind the scenes:Sonya EdelmanDirector, DoPHanna MakkiProducerMaitri SomaiaSecond Camera, EditorBaharehTalentTo find out more, please go towww.bahareh.com or comeand hear her recite her poetryat Cafe Arabia @ 7:30 PM on8 June.I’d never heard of poetry videos before, and it is clear that we are in new terrain.Yet after getting to know Bahareh and her poetry it dawned on me that it actuallymade complete sense. Bahareh’s world is multi-sensory; it is easy to connect withher inspiring honesty – her amazing source of truth. Indeed, we all probably havesomething interesting to say, the challenge lies in finding an interesting way tosay it.

The membersare from every facetof society: architects, professors, teachers, engineers, pharmacists.doctors, dentists, authors,salesmen...KEY PERSON: Jessica M, professor at New York Institute of Technology in Abu Dhabi,School of Architecture and Interior Design.ACCOMPLICES: Mohammed El-shishtawy, pharmacist working at Al Rahba HospitalMohamamed Abu Esmail, banker in Corporate BankingAmr Amr, pharmacy sales person in Bristol Myers SquibbAmr Amr: Normally the poll is up, and we forget about it,and Jessica finally decides.. Democracy takes place. Hahah!Mohammed El-shishtawy: We are given a month to read a book. Andnovels are our favourites… it makes us think and get convinced by the“idea” that “idea” can change lives.Wella Maria: At best, we are near virtual strangers to each other yet wecome together with our passion for unearthing subplots, assassinatingcharacters and connecting stories. In our meager hours each month wetake a breather from the conundrum of corporate life here in the UAEto expand ourselves through discussing overarching themes in life. Wecome and go, but we leave no page unturned as we delve into discussionsbranched out to exhaustive measures.Mohammed Abu Esmail: We relate the book to the current society andit’s cultural issues and we pick out the values and principles from it.Mohammed El-shishtawy: The members are from all the corners of theworld; they have different backgrounds and are from all walks of life, andthat is something that enriches our meetings and gives our discussions aunique taste.Jessica M: I see the group as a public forum to discuss our personalthoughts on the book subjects. These thoughts lead to other ideas andspecific experiences. This is why I am so interested in the group. Please don’t misunderstand my sentiment. My work generally comes at the expense of others. I work in an emergency room. So… you end up on my doorstep, with an... EMERGENCY. Right?Let me introduce you to a curious subspecies of patients, the “seekers.....”Some basic questions to start with.... Do you think your average emergency patientdemands which doctor they want to see? Call the emergency room ahead of timeto ask which doctors are working? Come to the hospital on a daily basis, maybeeven several times in a single day? Or shift?? Demand a certain medication and ata specified dose, or even bargain with the physician, about how much medicationthey would like before they agree to leave? Would I BS about such things? Theirnumbers are plentiful. It’s hard to take these guys seriously after a while. The first time, you meet them, you get fooled…they have the pitch down. But once you spend enough time, youstart to see the “regulars” and their patterns. Does it make any difference that Ihave computer access listing the entire clinic, ED visits, and all the medicationsand dates they have been prescribed?? None at all. Imagine the drama that ensueswhen the Doc walks into the room and calmly explains that this non-emergent,and that non essential medication will not be filled on this visit. All hell breaksloose. They pose a mental, ethical, and psychologicalchallenge to all they interact with. They come inwith anything from no complaints, just “waltzing”into the ED, not in the least ill-appearing, to themost outlandish complaints with a method-actor’sperformance to match. They exist everywhere.Their stories are amazingly similar despitecontinental and cultural differences.Already in North America, there is a huge prescription pill problem, which themedia reports frequently. An estimated 20 percent of Americans have usedprescription drugs for nonmedical reasons.UAE... get ready. I never really imaginedseeing this behavior here. How naïve! How pathetic! They can be the reason why YOU sometimes have to wait to be seen. Hear thatyelling??? A certain story comes to mind: “The Boy Who Cried Wolf”. If you knowthe story, you know how it ends.Let’s see who pays me a visit tonight…THE PALACES OF LIFEIf you have been going through a ‘decluttering’, or doing any personaldevelopment work for that matter, you may feel it is time to take stock ofwhere you are today and what you have become. Since all of clutter you haverepresents being ‘stuck in some area of life’, you may want to do a lot of exploringof issues. One helpful framework to do this is the increasingly popular ‘Feng Shui Bagua’;a simple grid of nine squares, or ‘palaces’, that is imagined to map onto a house, office or room, to allow you to visualize how the space corresponds to differentareas of life. Other than being a great tool to manage space, the Bagua is greatfor tackling the different hats we wear in life.EMPOWERMENT }FAME & FUTURE }RELATIONSHIPS }COMMUNITY }Material wealth, influenceAchievements, reputationOne-on-one, intimacySociety, family, friendsHEALTH } Physical, mental, spiritualCREATIVITY } Children, creative projectsWISDOM } Skills, knowledge, virtuesSELF } Life path & professionHELPFUL PEOPLE } Support, travel, divinityWork with the areas that feel most important or cover all palaces. For any onepalace ask yourself the following questions:• What is not working?• What is working? Make a list.• How am I contributing to what is working? How am I contributing towhat is not working? Become conscious of what you think and do.• What would be the ideal scenario? Pretend you are a film director andcreate a script for your ideal situation for each palace (or generally). Youmay have some limitations in life, but in your mind, you are totally free;choose thoughts that feel good and you will create experiences that feelgood. It is better to write them down; and be sure to use ‘I’ in the presenttense.• How are my experiences reflected in my space and in the things I keep?Your space is a visual affirmation of your life. } Alma KadragicPhotos } Abdul RahmanBUILDING A TRANSNATIONAL MUSEUMA Big Job for the Abu Dhabi GuggenheimThree years from now the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will beopening on Saadiyat island, another iconic building fromFrank Gehry, an architect who specializes in them and who hasa track record in designing Guggenheim Foundation museumsin Bilbao, Spain. For now the Abu Dhabi version exists only inan artist’s image and as a model at the exhibition in ManaratAl Saadiyat. But putting up a building from the architect’sdesign is the easy part. Deciding what goes into the buildingand how the contents will reflect the region and the UAEhas been occupying experts at the Guggenheim since theinitial agreement was signed in 2006 between the SolomonGuggenheim Foundation and the Government of Abu Dhabi.Focus Groups of International ExpertsLast month international art scholars came to Abu Dhabi for an intensetwo days of focus groups to work toward some conclusions about howthe museum should be defined and how the collections might fit into thehistory of art in the world and in the region. On the third day some of the scholars met the public in a program billedas “The first in a series of talks and panel discussions exploring the visionand future programs of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.” It took place atManarat Al Saadiyat which currently stands in for all the future museumsof the future Cultural District including the Louvre, Sheikh Zayed, andMaritime as well as the Guggenheim.Four Parts of Future MuseumNancy Spector, Deputy Director and Chief Curator, Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, said that the Abu Dhabi collection is planned in four parts: acquisitions bythe Abu Dhabi government for the permanent collection; long term loans from the Guggenheim Foundation from New York, Bilbao, Venice, or others in its family ofmuseums; the Middle East collection including art by Emiratis; and works commissioned specially for the unique spaces of the Abu Dhabi Guggenheim.During the panel discussion, questions arose about what constitutes the MiddleEast and when contemporary art begins. Spector said that the Guggenheim AbuDhabi would focus on the period from 1960, but Salwa Mikdadi, Head of Arts andCulture Program at the Emirates Foundation, said the entire 20th century shouldbe represented to “provide a frame of reference for young people.”Art Helps Develop Civil SocietyIn general, Mikdata said, “the growth of civil society and the response in the arts isimportant in how we select works for the permanent collection” and emphasizedthat “serious research” is needed because there are “no degrees in Islamic arthistory” in the region. Dr. Borys Groys who teaches aesthetics and art history inKarlsruhe, Germany, as well as at New York University said that today “all cultureslive in the same time” or what he called “transnational time,” meaning that “pastand future co-exist in the same moment.” He noted the contradiction betweenwhat a museum does - which is to preserve and also to show. As a result, Groysexplained, the museum “should be about process.”Role of Emiratis and ArabsDuring the Q & A, several people in the audience asked about the role that Emiratiart would play in the Guggenheim. They were told that the New York Guggenheimis planning an exhibition of Emirati art. They also learned that there won’t be “a section called Emirati art” in Abu Dhabi;works by Emiratis will be catalogued by themes or influences, not by nationality.H.R.H. Princess Wijdan Al-Hashemi of Jordan spoke about the promise and theproblems ahead. “I see a great future provided that the Guggenheim gets out ofits shell and interacts with Arab artists rather than just looks at its collection assomething to join the past and the present.”

YANK IN THE SANDLANDRandy Parker | Captain America in ExileCOGNITIVE REALITIESSONGKRANIt was the Thai New Year’s celebration recently and I had the fortune to attendthis unique celebration. The event consists of spraying each other with water andsmearing clay on one’s face. I had reservations about this initially but ended up reallyenjoying myself. Think a wet Mardi Gras; no one gets away dry. My mobile phone wasa victim; it died from the water. It is not often that one comes across an exhibition ofartworks from great Indian Masters in the UAE. But,on 23rd May such an exhibition opened at Art Select,Jumeirah Emirates Towers in Dubai. The exhibitiontitled ‘Cognitive Realities’ will feature not only Indianmasters but also Emirati masters. The exhibition consists of art from Indian masterslike FN Souza, Anjolie Ela Menon, B Prabha, LaxmanGaud and Charan Sharma amongst many others. Fourfamous Emirati masters, namely Jalal Luqman, Mattarbin Lahej, Fatma Lootah and Mohammed al Qassab areexhibiting alongside their Indian counterparts.Centuries ago, this was a solemn event held at Buddhist temples. Respect was paidto elders and resolutions were made for the new year. Now vehicles and pedestrianshave to run a gauntlet of water bazookas and buckets. Garbage cans full of waterare kept street side for ammunition, many with blocks of ice inside for added effect.Songkran celebrations occur mid-April and are strictly a daytime activity. Indeed, one can go out at night without fear of getting soaked. I felt 10 years old again…squirting people in the face with ice water will do that to you. Everyone was in a goodmood and I got in the spirit of things.I really enjoy the people and culture of Thailand. Thecountry has a fantastic infrastructure and the people seemhappy. I have been to Thailand three times now and I enjoyeach visit more and more. There is a freedom there that Ihave seen nowhere else. The government wisely leaves theaverage person to live their lives as they see fit.The bottom line is I had a good time and I recommend Songkran in Thailandto all. A little piece of advice though: leave your good clothes and electronicsat home!Visit Randy's blog on your smart phoneIt would be impossible to talk about all the artistsexhibiting in my column, so I am going to share littlesnippets about a few of them. The exhibiting artists areartists with great intrigue and pizazz. I have followedtheir works since I was young.Anjolie Ela Menon is one such artist and her work leftan indelible mark on my creative psyche. She is oneof India’s leading contemporary female artists. Sheworks with oils and mosaics and is well known for herfemale figures. Her artworks often has conspicuousiconography of black crows, hidden figures andempty chairs. When I first saw one of her paintings,I remember trying to figure out, what could crowspossibly be doing with knitting needles and a ball ofwool, next to an old woman. I would gaze at her worksto try and decipher them. The late F N Souza was famous for his deliberatelyeclectic expressionist works and his remark ‘the societymust adapt to the artist’. In recent years, his paintingshave been sold for over million dollars.JUST A THOUGHTManar Al Hinai | A Khaleeji girl who overthinks a lot and loves to writeMy father always makes fun of me, especially when we’reabout to leave a hotel at the end of our summer holiday. I’vealways been known as over-emotional. I’m the type of girlwho would cry at romantic gestures, farewells, and weddings. When I like something I get emotionally attached… I give itmy full attention and love, and it’s really hard for me whenit’s time to leave.I graduated two years ago, and I still feel nostalgic about Leeds, England, and about myuniversity life. I know that the places aren’t going anywhere, and I can always go backand visit, but I still long for everything I left. What I’m trying to say is that I’m not a bigcheerleader for change especially when something’s so perfect in my eyes. What I tend tooverlook is that change is always for the better. There’s always something good comingout of it, especially when you look at it positively. To elaborate, if I hadn’t graduated fromEngland I wouldn’t have had the time to design my fashion collection, or thought aboutbecoming a columnist. If I hadn’t left my old middle school, then I wouldn’t have metthe most amazing friends I could ever have.Change depends on how we perceive it. It is up to us to turn everything weface in our lives, into a positive experience, with the hope and the beliefthat the best is yet to come, and that we deserve it all!If all we did is kept looking back thinking that the best laid in the past, then we wouldnever experience the joy of the present, and the hidden surprises of the future. Atthis point I can’t help but remember Thomas Edison’s profound secret to success. Hewillingly accepted failure and change. To him, failure, and most importantly change, provided valuable information to correct the course of his life, and come up with betterinventions.Follow me on twitter @manar_alhinaiEXHIBITION DATES FOR PUBLIC24 May - 24 June | Art Select at Level 10 | Jumeirah Emirates Towers | Dubai} Neena RaiAn artist with a flairCharan Sharma’s major quality comprises a constantsearch for the truth. DELIVER A SPEECH WITH CONFIDENCE} Ziad SamadThis is for you out there who have never given a speech inyour life. It is scary at first, akin to venturing to the deep sideof the pool after you have just learned to swim. But once youhave done it there is nothing like the sense of achievementit gives you.••••••••••First and foremost, you should have a thorough idea of what you want totalk about. Have the speech written down and practice it in front of a smallaudience or at least a mirror. If the speech is impromptu, make a rough plan with an introduction, bodyand conclusion.Appearance is important. Once you are presentable you are halfwaythere. However make sure you are comfortable with what you arewearing.Talk to a few people from the audience. You will have a better idea of thekind of people who are in front of you.Experts prefer to have keywords from their speech written on cards. This isin place of having the entire speech in front of you which will often give youthe tendency to read from itTake a deep breath with your hand on your stomach as you contract andexpand. This will help calm your nerves.Non-verbal communication is as important as what you say. So maintain asteady posture. If you have a podium in front don›t lean on it too much. Alsotry not to wave your hands around too much. Before starting the speech, acknowledge the audience with a smile andgreetings. Also if the mass of upturned faces intimidate you, concentrateon a space without people. Or imagine everyone wearing clown suits. Findone or two friendly faces in the crowd and pay more attention to them. Thishelps you feel less distanced from the audience.Believe what you say and deliver it with conviction and passion. Theaudience will know it if you stop concentrating on the words and the threadof your speech.Lastly, learn from orators and TV anchors. Their ability to hold your attentioncomes from years of training. Everything from facial movements to the waythey emphasize certain words makes you want to listen to what they haveto say.“I have a dream that one day this nationwill rise up and live out the true meaningof its creed. We hold these truths to be selfevidentthat all men are created equal.”A history-defining speech, delivered on 28 August 1963 at theLincoln Memorial, Washington DCby Martin Luther King Jr.“I Have A Dream”‘PRISM’ FOR PERSONAL PEFORMANCE MAPPINGNicola Ablett | A UAE based PRISM and HR Consultant who spoke at a Tamakkan seminar1. WHAT IS PRISM?PRISM Personal Performance Mapping is a sophisticated, online, neuroscience-basedinstrument specifically designed to identify the behavioural preferences that directlyrelate to personal relationships and work performance.PRISM provides three distinct profiles, or ‘maps’, of a person’s behaviour: how he or shenaturally prefers to behave; the extent to which he or she feels it necessary to modify thatbehaviour on occasions to achieve key objectives, and the overall pattern of behaviour thathe or she tends to use for most of the time. In addition to the eight behaviour dimensionmaps, PRISM generates a 20-page personalised report which identifies and measures 26key aspects of work preference. PRISM also provides an analysis of a person’s EmotionalIntelligence (EQ) preferences and a summary of his or her ‘big five’ personality traits, oneof the most widely accepted and used models of personality.2. WHO IS PRISM GOOD FOR?Assessment Centres, Staff Development, Recruitment, Coaching, 360 Feedback,Performance Management, Staffing Adverts, Greater Customer Awareness, Mentoring,Performance Appraisals, Conflict Management, Improved Sales, Performance, TeamBenchmarks and performance, Organizational behaviour3. WHAT ARE THE TANGIBLE BENEFITS?Rather than abstract, theoretical concepts, PRISM measures the things that people likedoing and the behavioural characteristics related to those things. Research shows thatpeople whose interests match their occupations find greater job satisfaction, are moreproductive and have higher levels of motivation. These outcomes can increase theindividual’s work performance and enhance the chances of career success. Indeed, aHarvard Business Review study has shown that staff turnover almost doubles when no‘job suitability match’ has been undertaken. Moreover, the study also concluded that 80%of staff turnover can be attributed to mistakes made during the employee selection andrecruitment process.Neuroscience – which has seen most of its major discoveries made in the last 10-15years – has proved that the brain is remarkably elastic in terms of its capacity for change.PRISM focuses, not only on the brain’s functional architecture, but also on how the neuralnetworks interact with brain chemicals such as glutamate, dopamine, noradrenaline, serotonin, testosterone and oestrogen to create behaviour.4. WHERE IS IT IN USE?UK, USA, UAE, India, China, Hong Kong, South Africa, South America. Many internationalbrands are using the profiles themselves and also for their leadership programmes.5. WHEN WAS IT INTRODUCED TO THE UAE, AND HOW HASTHE UPTAKE BEEN?It was introduced in Spring 2009, and there have been 19 practitioners to date locallyincluding ADICOE, ADJD, ATIC, NEXT LEVEL, BES and CAPITA GLOBAL.For more information on PRISM go to:www.prismbrainmapping.com and check out where thenearest practitioners are to you or email Nicola on:nja.can@gmail.comCELEBRITY ENDORSEMENTSA DEFINITE YES OR AN ABSOLUTE NO?by BrandMoxieA client came to us recently with a specific request. He wanted a ‘celebrity endorsement’ and hewanted Nancy Ajram. “Why endorsement and why Nancy Ajram?’ The answer: ‘she’s very prettyand my children like her.” Once we conducted a strategy evaluation of business and marketinggoals, along the brand’s characteristics, its values and promise, the client realised that themoney was far better invested on another marketing vehicle. Does that mean that celebrityendorsements don’t work? Depends…Celebrity endorsements do work well sometimes. And sometimes they are a disaster to thebrand. Any decision should consider the short and long term impact on the brand and ontangible returns. (So none of the ‘she’s awfully pretty’ or ‘our Chairman used to date MariahCarey’s cousin’ stuff).Nike is one brand that has successfully managed to use celebrity endorsement to build its brandand to catapult it to the leadership position within a product category. A good example is Nikewith Michael Jordan, which spilled over into the development of product and brand variantsbased on the celebrity’s name and reputation. Nike also leveraged a successful association withTiger Woods to achieve rapid entry into the golf industry, even sticking by the celebrity duringhis tumultuous months. So how can a company decide whether or not to use a celebrity? Hereare a few pointers to keep in mind:ATTRACTIVENESS – This is not just about physical appearance of the celebrity but the energyhe or she projects, such as confidence, lifestyle choices and fitness/ healthiness levels.EMPATHY – This relates to the likeability of the celebrity and how able he or she is to transferthe positive qualities of the brand. What are the personable traits of the celebrity and how arethese characteristics compatible with the qualities of the brand?CREDIBILITY – Perhaps most contentious of the three principles: does the celebrity reflect the‘expertise’ position to enhance the brand, and how trustworthy and believable is he or she? Howabout the celebrity’s private life, is there a chance that the celebrity’s personal reputation mightcompromise the brand?Bottom line, if you decide on a celebrity endorsement as a brand builder, be sure there isabsolute consistency between the endorser, the endorsement and your brand.Copyright 2011 BrandMoxieKeep on learning. www.unleashmoxie.comTHE FACEBOOK ADDICTIONAn excerpt from a report on Facebookusage in the GCC, by Abu Dhabi Universitystudents Eman Abdulkarem, MarwaSuleiman, Khuzama Sa’ad, Reham Yusufand Tasabeih EmadDid you know that there are five million Facebook users inthe Gulf Cooperation Council region, and that the UAE hasthe highest number of Facebook users: 2,135,960 out ofa population of 4,707,307 – that’s about 45 percent! We ran a survey to identify various indicators that assesstrends and factors relating to Facebook usage. Weinterviewed people in our university and our communitiesto see the trends relating to Facebook usage. We foundthat 54% of our survey sampling ( ages 15 to 19 years)uses Facebook on a daily basis. Out of the total, 43% ofthe respondents log in more than five times a day to checktheir Facebook account and 41% spend more than threehours a day on Facebook. These results clearly indicate tous not only that Facebook is an important part in manypeople’s lives, but that it may in fact be an addiction. We believe there could be negative effects from Facebook.First of all, Facebook wastes time and distracts studentsfrom doing their academic work. For instance, if studentshave to do online research, they automatically log ontotheir Facebook accounts, and waste their time playingand chatting (we do that too) and time passes quicklywithout any work being accomplished.Another effect is that Facebook encourages teenagers tobuild unhealthy relationships between genders (that’saccording to researchers Doug Fodeman and MarjeMonroe) and the negligent sharing of their personalinformation (name, location, picture etc) and that is riskyand dangerous. Third, Facebook isolates teenagers andmakes them build an imaginary life and friends whomthey communicate with online only, and this definitelyshrinks their social life, and reduces their interaction withtheir family and the people around them. Another criticaleffect is that Facebook may lead to obesity among kids, because of the many hours they spend without movingor doing any physical activity. We know that Facebook is a social network used bypeople all over the world; it can be used to find oldfriends, to job-hunt, and to read or write and publishwork. Facebook is a lot of fun, but we have to learn to useit more responsibly.
