Child and Adolescent PsychiatryDivisionThe Child Psychiatry Division offers a range of outpatient individual,group, family and multiple family therapy services as well aspsychopharmacologic treatment for anxiety, mood, attentiondeficit and other disorders. The Child Division has two specialtyclinics: the Pediatric Stress and Anxiety Disorders Clinic, and thePediatric Mood Disorders Clinic. The Division has a ChildPsychiatry Consultation and Liaison Service which provides inpatientand outpatient services. In collaboration with theDepartment of Children and Family Services (DCFS), the Divisionhas a nine-bed adolescent unit and an outreach team for DCFSwards with severe psychiatric disorders.Tomas Wright, MD, Director ofChild & Adolescent FellowshipProgramMani Pavuluri, MD, Director ofPediatric Mood Disorders ClinicChild and adolescent psychiatry training takes place primarily inthe second postgraduate year. A 10-month seminar covering allmajor topics in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry takes place duringPGY-2. This seminar uses faculty from the department as wellas outside the department. Additionally, during PGY-2, residentsrotate full time for two months in the Child and AdolescentPsychiatry Division. During this rotation residents gain experiencein inpatient and outpatient evaluation and management of childhooddisorders in a variety of settings. A specialty inpatient unitfor adolescents provides a basis of education for adolescent psychiatrythroughout the training.Outpatient treatment training continues into the third postgraduateyear. Caseloads in child, adolescent, and family therapy aredeveloped. A six-month seminar and supervision opportunity infamily therapy provides the foundation for working with families.Child and adolescent outpatients can be seen into the fourth yearof residency.CHILD FELLOWSHIP:A fully accredited three-yearfellowship in child and adolescentpsychiatry is also available.Eight fellows in child andadolescent psychiatry also aidfaculty in teaching and supervisionof residents. Psychotherapy DivisionThe Psychotherapy Division serves as a primary educational experiencefor psychiatry residents and psychology trainees in the Department ofPsychiatry.The Psychotherapy Division offers a variety of modalities of outpatient psychotherapy,including brief and long-term psychotherapy, cognitive behavioraltherapy, group therapy (over 20 different groups), and family/maritaltherapy. The Division has a specialized Anxiety Disorders Program whichevaluates, treats, and conducts research on panic disorder, phobias,obsessive compulsive behavior, and other problems that involve anxiety.Residents learn how to do comprehensive assessment and cognitivebehavioral treatment of these disorders.Beginning in PGY-1, the formal course work on psychotherapy augmentsthe residents' clinical work. Most senior faculty members of the Departmentof are available as supervisors for residents, in addition to clinical facultyfrom the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis.The Psychotherapy experience begins in PGY-2 with two patients.Residents follow a minimum of two long-term psychotherapy patients whoremain with the resident therapist over the course of their training experience.In PGY-3 residents have a minimum of six individual patients in addition togroup, child, and family cases.In PGY-4, a minimum of four cases are maintained but some residentschoose a larger caseload of patients or specialize in a particular approachduring that year.There is an extensive group psychotherapy program, varying from psychodynamicto more supportive, focused groups. All residents are assigned asupervised group experience.
