“WGBH has given me so much that I certainlyshould give something back.To leave money to WGBH may be the singleeasiest thing you ever do. I really feelgood about it. It’s something I believe in.”Phyllis W. EliasbergWGBH memberPhoto: Mark Ostow for WGBHThere are many ways to build a legacy with WGBH.Contact our Office of Planned Giving and Endowment at1-800-220-7122 or wgbh.org/plannedgiving to learn how.

From the PresidentPoetry EverywhereGarrison Keillor (seen on this month’s cover) is an American icon. You’veenjoyed him on A Prairie Home Companion for 35 years (Saturdays at 6pm andSundays at 12noon on 89.7), as has my own family—who love his quirky, weekly “Letter from Lake Wobegon” stories. And this month, American Mastersrecognizes his stature with an intimate profile, The Man on the Radio in the RedShoes (Wednesday, 7/1 on WGBH 2; see page 8). You also may have discoveredKeillor’s brief, daily poetic meditations on The Writers Almanac (weekdaymornings at 8:55am on 89.7).Now, the man on the radio in the red shoes is helping us bring poetryto a wider TV and Web/social network audience with Poetry Everywhere(pbs.org/wgbh/poetryeverywhere). A WGBH co-production withDavid Grubin and The Poetry Foundation, PoetryEverywhere is a series of five-minute filmsinterspersed at unexpected moments throughoutthe TV broadcast schedule and available on theWeb 24/7. Our objective is simple: to expose diverseaudiences to a spectrum of contemporary poemsand poetic voices, on air and online, and build abroader appreciation for poetry.“We want to make poetry a visceral andaccessible experience for as many people as possible,”says Brigid Sullivan, WGBH Vice President for Children’s, Educationaland Interactive Programming, and executive producer of the project. “Andwho better to narrate the series than Garrison?,” Brigid adds. “He’s a belovedpublic radio presence, a trusted authority on poetry, and he has that rich, familiar voice.”Keillor’s introductions provide context and guidance for audiences—Facebook and Twitter users included—and eases them into appreciating theserendipity of the Poetry Everywhere segments, be they former US PoetLaureate Billy Collins reading The Lanyard or playwright Tony Kushner sharinga favorite passage from Walt Whitman.New avenues for reaching new audiences? It’s pure poetry. Thanks toyour generous support, WGBH is able to offer rare exposure to the best of ourculture—free and accessible to all!Jon AbbottComing in AugustLook for a slimmed-down August program guide. Hadley teamed up with fellowBerkshire summer resident, New York City socialiteand determined organizer Gertrude Robinson-Smith to raise money and recruit musicians to performclassical music excerpts. Starting an ambitiousproject in the midst of the Depression mayseem strange, but Robinson-Smith saw the potentialof jobs for local laborers and business forBerkshire inns and restaurants. On August 23, 1934, musicians from theNew York Philharmonic Orchestra performed thefirst concert of the Berkshire Symphonic Festivalat the Hanna Horse Farm in Stockbridge. Moreoutdoor concerts followed in 1935 and 1936,before Hadley and Robinson-Smith parted waysdue to Hadley’s failing health and “artisticdifferences”—Robinson-Smith was pushing forcomplete musical works, while Hadley preferredexcerpts. Robinson-Smith invited the BSO toperform in 1936 and 1937.Meanwhile, the Tappan Family, which ownedone of the parcels of land that now make upTanglewood, was struggling with the financialdownturn, and was unable to rent out their propertyto summer tenants (previous tenants includedNathaniel Hawthorne, from whose TanglewoodTales the venue takes its name). Robinson-Smithapproached the Tappan family, who agreed togive the buildings and 210 acres of lawns andmeadows to the BSO. Thus, in 1937, the BSO wasgiven a permanent summer home.Serge Koussevitzky, the BSO’s conductor atthe time, gratefully received the donation.Koussevitzky wrote of the gift: “Little did I thinkthat my own early dream of a Music and Art Centerin Moscow, in the heart of Russia, would find itsrealization in the heart of New England a quarterof a century later. Indeed, miracles cannot beaccounted for.”An enormous tent was set up to improvethe outdoor acoustics and provide shelter for theorchestra and audience. The heat proved to be areal problem, leading to some of the first performancesin shirt-sleeves rather than formal jackets. And, the tent wasnot waterproof. On the eveningof August 12,during a programof Wagner, asudden thunderstormdrenchedthe tent and itsinhabitants. An eyewitness account in M. A.DeWolfe Howe’s A Tale of Tanglewood says, “thefloods descended on the tent top with such a roarthat all the brasses of Wagner could not prevailagainst it, and the music had to come to a fullstop.” The case for a waterproof and airy performancespace had been made.Koussevitzky and Robinson-Smith workedwith Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen to design agraceful music pavilion, but they were unable toraise the funds to build it. The idea for a simpleand functional shed came from Berkshire residentJoseph Franz, and it was built in time for the 1938summer season. Renamed the KoussevitzkyMusic Shed in 1988, it resembles a large pianofrom the air, seats 5,200 people, and is a masterpieceof acoustic design. The rest, as they say, ismusical history!Summer Sundays atTanglewoodLive broadcasts begin Sundays at 2pm,with host Ron Della Chiesa’s special“pre-game” show. CodaInside Live Radio and Baseball with Neal ConanAward-winning journalist Neal Conan hostsTalk of the Nation, the national news-talk call-inshow from NPR® News. Conan brings an agile andinsightful mind (along with three decades of newsand radio experience) to the show, which reachesnearly 3.4 million listeners a week on more than300 NPR member stations, including WGBH’s sisterstation on the Cape, WCAI.Like so many, Conan also is a baseball fan.During the 2001 baseball season, Conan took ayear off from NPR to call baseball games, anexperience he recounts in his book, Play By Play:Baseball, Radio and Life in the Last Chance League.WGBH’s Jen Goebel chatted with Conan recentlyabout baseball and live radio, which have more incommon than you might think. How did you get started in radio?QAI was sitting alone in my New York Cityapartment and was fiddling with the FM dial, when I came across these voices talking on the air.I’d never heard voices like these before—it wasback in the ’60s—and most of the voices youheard were incredibly artificial and stylized. WhatI stumbled across was people telling bad jokesand laughing, women’s voices, which were veryunusual at the time, and people talking likepeople. In fact, I had discovered the very first publicradio fundraising marathon. I ended up goingin to answer telephone calls for the station. What was your first paying job in radio?Qwas the recording engineer on HarryAIMcGuirk’s Irish Hour, for which I got paid $5and a bottle of Guinness—and they were unwiseenough to give me the Guinness before the showstarted. What do you like best about hostingQ Talk of the Nation?AI like that the distance between the idea andthe air is very short. And I am constantlyamazed by the resources that listeners are willingto bring to the program. They’ve written poetryand commencement addresses, for example. I alsoreally love going in at 2 o’clock and doing theshow. It’s extremely difficult because it’s alwayslive and there’s a million ways to mess it up. Youhave to keep three clocks in your head at once—you have to know where you are in the show, where you are with the delay, and how long thiscut of tape is.How did you get interested in callingQ baseball games?AI was in Chicago preparing to anchor the livecoverage of the national convention forPresident Clinton’s second term. I had this giantbriefing book and I was cramming for the night’sbroadcast. As I was reading up on the issues, I hadthe ball game on the radio—and I realized I wasdoing the same thing that the announcers weredoing. You start the broadcast with a brief summaryof what’s at stake, in my case the foreign policynight at the Democratic National Convention, or intheirs that the Cubs hope to take the “rubber”game of the three game series. Then, you introduceyour play-by-play partners, in their case an oldrelief pitcher, and in my case E.J. Dionne of theWashington Post. Then you run through the battingorder or the schedule for that night’s events, andthen you take it down to the convention floor ordown to the field and do the best you can todescribe things as they happen.I’ve adored baseball on the radio since I was akid, and it had never occurred to me that maybemy skills were transferable. What do you like about calling baseballQ games?AIt gives you a chance to tell incredible storieswithin the structure of the game. The storyis always told pitch by pitch, but you’re allowed toweave stories in and around the narrative. I lovethat you don’t know what’s going to happen, you’re stepping off a cliff every single day. That’sthe best part about baseball, and it’s also the bestpart about live radio. Are you looking forward to this year’sQ Cape Cod League All-Star game?AI called the game last summer in Chatham, which is a lovely place to visit and a charmingfield, but this is Fenway Park—it’s the chance of alifetime. What’s the future of public radio?QAPublic radio has a very recognizable andtrusted brand. We have an incredible newsgathering organization not just at NPR, withnational and international news, but also atstations like WGBH and around the country. Wehave to leverage the trust and comfort peoplehave in us onto other platforms.Batter Up!Neal Conan will call the Cape CodBaseball League’s All-Star Gamelive from Fenway Park onThursday, 7/23 at 7pm.
