2011 FIRST SEMI-FINALSTAT CHAT Panthers v Eagles By Robert Laidlaw6In the 1950s, West Torrens played in six First Semi-Finals,including a one-point success over Norwood in ‘54, whichwas the last time the Eagles won any type of Finals gameup to amalgamating with Woodville in 1991.The biggest margin in a First Semi-Final occurred in1981, when Norwood 19.19 beat the Panthers 6.14 for an83-point victory.Sturt hold the record for the lowest First Semi score from1948, when it kicked 4.9, but only lost by 27-points to WestAdelaide’s 7.18 – the lowest winning score.There have been 11 First Semi-Finals with less thana goal between the teams, including two draws, in 1933(North and Norwood) and 1969 (West and Torrens),with the first replay decided by just one-point, the Redlegsvictorious.Two other First Semi-Finals have been decided by asingle point, with Torrens’ 1954 success over Norwoodand Glenelg’s thrilling victory over the Double Blues fiveyears later.Amazingly only South and Norwood from current clubshave a losing record in First Semi-Finals, with the Redlegs35 appearances, 15 victories and 19 losses all leading theway.From 79 First Semis since 1931, there have been twodraws, with 36 victors going on to make the Grand Finaland only eight successfully annexing the premiership –Sturt (1932 and 1976) and Port (1958 and 1998) twice,while North (1931), Torrens (1945), West (1947) andNorwood (1984) have each done it once.Justin Cicolella.Today is the first time South Adelaide and Woodville-West Torrens have met in any type of Final since theEagles began in 1991, while against the old West Torrens,the Panthers won the only First Semi between the sides, in1937, by 50 points.Since 1931, South has played in nine First Semi-Finals forthree wins – but only one since 1940, which was a21-point victory over Norwood in 1979, when the Pantherswent on to play in its most recent Grand Final.Four of the Panthers’ six losses have been against NorthAdelaide, including its most recent Finals appearance in2006 – by 25 points – and in 1990, when the Roosters’booted a record First Semi score of 23.14.The Eagles have been in eight First Semi-Finals for a 4-4win-loss record. They have played in six over the pastdecade, including the past two and three of the past four.Woodville only played in one First Semi, a seven-pointwin over Port Adelaide in 1986, while West Torrens playedin 16 for just four victories and a draw. In 1945 the Eaglesbeat North by six points on the way to winning the flag.TEN YEARS AGO2001 – Port Adelaide 18.9 (117) d Norwood 9.19 (73)The major difference between Port Adelaide andNorwood in the 2001 First Semi was accuracy, with theMagpies winning by 44 points in spite of having one lessscoring shot.Port had 11 goalscorers – Mark Harwood leading theway with 5.1 – and only five pointscorers, while theRedlegs had seven players recording goals and 12booting behinds. Magarey Medallist Ryan O’Connorwas best for the Magpies, while Brett James led the wayfor Norwood.FIVE YEARS AGO2006 – North Adelaide 14.18 (102) d South Adelaide11.11 (77)The Finals fairytale finished for South Adelaide inthe 2006 First Semi-Final, when North Adelaide kickedseven last-quarter goals to come from behind to win by25 points.For the first three-quarters there wasn’t much betweenthe teams, with the Panthers holding a 13-point advantageat the final change, with North proving too strong in thelast term, in spite of only having 17 fit men. Chris Ladhamswas the Roosters’ best and booted five goals, whileStephen Kenna was South’s best.
