Survivorship Care Needs of Head and Neck Cancer Patientsat Vancouver Island CentreAn inter-disciplinary team ofresearchers at the BC Cancer AgencyVictoria Cancer Centre is undertakinga qualitive study on the survivorshipinformation and care needs of locallyadvanced head and neck cancerpatients living on Vancouver Islandand treated with curative intentradiotherapy for locally advanced baseof tongue and tonsil. The project isfunded by the VIC Catalyst grant.Patients with cancer of base of tongueand cancer of the tonsil experiencelong term reductions in quality of life, which impacts on treatment outcomesand survival. Their survivorshipinformation needs are not currentlybeing met, as evidenced by anecdotalself reporting by patients who returnto the Cancer Centre for radiationfollow-up. Patients living outside ofVictoria have less access to supportiveTeam members (from left to right):Helen Wong, Cheri Cosby, Andrea FimriteTeam members missing from photo:Tracy Lister, Beverly Gerbis, Sally Smithresources and information. A sample of12 patients, 6 living in Victoria and 6living up island close to Nanaimo will beinterviewed on an individual, one-ononebasis.We hope to get better insight and beable to identify specific issues thatsurvivors of these head and neckpatients face as they transition backinto their communities. The project is composed of amultidisciplinary team that includesprinciple investigator, Cheri Cosby, RD(Nutrition Services) and co-investigatorsAndréa Fimrite, RD (Nutrition Services),Tracy Lister, RD (Manager of NutritionServices, VIHA-Nanaimo GeneralHospital), Dr. Sally Smith (RadiationOncology), Beverly Gerbis, RN(Nursing), and Helen Wong (Patient &Family Counselling).Supportive Needs of Cancer Survivors WorkshopA recent Pre-MASCC (Multinational Associationof Supportive Care in Cancer) Symposium studygroup workshop, “Cancer Survivorship: Creatinginternational collaborations to study the supportivecare needs of cancer survivors”, was held inVancouver, BC on June 23rd, 2010. The workshop aimedto bring together leading international researchers andclinicians to highlight international work in the field ofcancer survivorship, and to explore ways of facilitatingcollaborative partnerships.Due to advances in screening, prevention, andtreatment, an increasing number of people are survivingcancer diagnoses. Embracing survivorship issues hastherefore become a priority at both research and practicelevels. However, there are challenges to advancingthe science and practice work in cancer survivorship, including, a limited number of people working in thearea of survivorship, and constraints on funding. Atthis time, it is essential to consolidate knowledge andexpertise internationally. The collaborative study workshop encouraged experts incancer survivorship to come together to share informationand form alliances to advance international survivorshippriorities under a single consortium. This internationalconsortium will provide a platform for researchers andpractitioners to communicate regardless of geographiclocation. The objectives of the workshop were to highlight existingcancer survivorship initiatives at national and internationallevels, discuss the benefits and challenges of establishingan international survivorship consortium, identify potentialcollaborations among researchers, clinicians and funders, and a process for knowledge dissemination, exchangeand translation, and establish a commitment to developpartnerships under the umbrella of a cancer survivorshipresearch consortium.Priority research areas identified for short-term team projectsincluded a catalogue of currently implemented survivorshipguidelines, a survey of health care providers, and a survey ofcancer survivors and caregivers’ unmet needs.CONNECTIONS / SUMMER 2010 3
