Cyber Physical Systems – Situation AnalysisDRAFT – March 9, 2012views into consideration. Issues in CPS environment modeling, such as debugging, are challenging in asimulated environment and become even more difficult as system development progresses to ―hardwarein the loop‖ and target platform testing (e.g., flight test and vehicle test tracks). 256In the terms of transportation infrastructure, modeling techniques and tools that can captureenvironmental and physical aspects, with their uncertainties, are needed but not yet developed. Anotherchallenge in CPS environment modeling includes collecting, managing, and mining data, especiallybecause the data sets involved can be massive. Development of model formalisms is necessary at thesystem level to capture safety specifications of multiple vehicle systems. Traditional fault modeling thatcaptures individual vehicle faults will not be sufficient for an integrated transport system. To compensate, theories for composition of fault models that can capture system-level faults beyond individual vehiclescan be used. The complexity of transportation CPS is beyond current real-time theory and practice inreasoning about large-scale mobile network protocols with multiple dynamic inputs. Current rate-basedand aperiodic event models must be extended to events whose priorities change based on environment. 257REFERENCES• 18 th World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems. ―America‘s Transportation Leaders Agree thatIntelligent Transportation is the Future of Travel.‖ 21 Oct 2011.http://www.itsworldcongress.org/releases/WorldCongressEndsReleaseFinal.pdf• Amici, A. et al.
