The Rabbi’s Corner, continued from previous pagekodesh. Moreover, the complexbeauties of Hebrew’s few words conveya composite sense of Jewish lifeand meaning well beyond the comparableEnglish terms... Functionality inHebrew will nurture your Jewishidentity as a whole, and facilitateyour grasp of the messages of tefilla,in the specific...The above being said aboutHebrew, what do we do while westill cannot read it, or at least read itwell? First and foremost, don’t letyourself “get psyched out.” Tefillotbelong to you as much as they do tothe fluent Hebrew reader. Put yourlack of Hebrew literacy aside andutilize the transliteration bookletswe have for many of the prayers. You can learn how to say and singmany of the prayers without readingthem in Hebrew, and you can keepyour eyes attuned to the Englishtranslation for understanding .I don’t understand what I’msaying. Even at the point of understandingthe meaning of prayers, prayer is not primarily an intellectualexercise, an academic exchangewith God... We sing to God, wemarvel at his creations, we cry toGod, we mourn with God, we shareour anger with God. Prayer is atime for emotional outpouring asindividuals and as a communityconcerned about issues of the dayand our responsibilities in theworld... Just as the music of yourfavorite musical genre takes you toother worlds, often irrespective ofthe lyrics, so can the music andrhythm of tefilla.I prefer to pray privately athome, in my own words and language. One of the most serious misunderstandingsabout Jewish prayerconcerns the efficaciousness ofindependent prayer, out of the contextof our formal liturgy. The pointof having our formal prayers is tomake sure that we pray. The sagesdid not want us to rely on fleetingand irregular moments of spiritualconnectedness to inspire us to pray,so they crafted and mandated thedaily liturgy. This, they hoped, would then inspire a greater spiritualconnectedness and God-consciousness....The rabbis encouraged independentprayer, believed it to be a naturalconsequence of our disciplineof regular prayer, yet rejected independentprayer as a substitute forour formal prayers…. We can usethese blessings or the independentprayers of our heart to markmoments, addressing God informally, not necessarily as adonai or elohimin formal phraseology, but inways such as, “Hey God, I needyour strength and support and Ineed it now.”I’m being “bad” if I don’t cometo services. You are not being “abad Jew” if you don’t come to services,or for that matter, if you failto do other ritual observances.Rather, you are missing a tremendousopportunity for spiritual upliftand reflection, a gift we rarely giveourselves.I’m just not spiritual. OR Idon’t believe in God, so how can Ipray? Join a very popular club ofregular service-goers who wouldnot define themselves as spiritualindividuals. Some come here onShabbat morning to be spirituallynurtured communally – throughsinging, fellowship, and discussion— in a way they cannot be individually.Others take an intellectualapproach to prayer — studying itshistory, evolution, and structure, aprocess greatly aided by the wonderfulsiddur commentary, OhrChadash, many copies of which sitright outside the sanctuary.Furthermore, if we are to define“spiritual,” as does Merriam-Webster, as, “of or related to sacredmatters” and “concerned with religiousvalues,” I would argue thatmany more of you are spiritual thanyou think. What I call “God” youmay call “source of meaning.” Oursynagogue is both a house of Godand a house in which to make senseand order of the world.***As you can tell, I am quite bullishabout what Jewish prayer in thissynagogue can bring to your lives. Our prayers, our tefillot, are theproperty of each and every Jew, nomatter how Hebraically-illiterate,Jewishly-ignorant or secular he considershimself to be. The stumblingblocks to getting comfortable in servicesare considerable, as I havedetailed, but it’s a matter of gettingcomfortable in your own home. This home belongs to you and everyother Jew in the world. So take your shoes off, relax, and make yourselves feel right athome in this elaborate mansion ofprayer in our sanctuary. Find therooms you love. Identify the othersyou may want to try out in thefuture. Just don’t leave Jewishprayer before you make the effortfirst to surmount the obstaclesnoted above. The effort needed maybe considerable, but the opporunitiesopened up therein are evenmore considerable. The Robbins Family–Rabbi Mark, Amy,Adina and Caleb–wish you a wonderful 5765!3

FROM THE PRESIDENTFor many of us, the beginning of fall brings back memories of “afterschool”and Sunday mornings spent in Hebrew School. Growing up, myfamily were members of an Orthodox Shul, and I attended Cheder fourtimes a week and once more on Sunday mornings. (And I don’t rememberever wishing I was outside playing baseball with my friends.) For manycongregants, the school is one very important reason for becoming andremaining a member of a synagogue. Even if, as adults, we are not as activein our synagogue as we would like to be, we want our children to be. Withthis new year, we have entrusted our Mispallelim School to Joan Joseph. Wewelcome Joan to the Ohev Shalom community. Joan comes to Ohev Shalomas the former Education Director of the Manchester Community School inManchester, New Hampshire. Joan was able to skillfully combine three differentJewish sects, Lubavitch, Reform and Conservative, into one cohesiveschool. Joan and her husband Jonathan have become members of OhevShalom and live nearby. And so it seems that one Sunday we are dropping our children off at theMispallelim School for their first session of the Gan class and the followingWednesday we are picking them up as graduates of the Hay class. With allthe other things in our children’s busy lives, they still find the hours of timenecessary for preparing to become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. As parents, we sitin our sanctuary seats and kvell at the sight of our children leading servicesas an adult for the first time. We are amazed that suddenly our ‘child’ is ableto daven, read Torah and Haftorah and deliver a D’var Torah with suchinsight you wouldn’t believe.During October, five of our prized students will celebrate their BnaiMitzvahs. On October 3, Benjamin Silverstein will become a Bar Mitzvah. On October 9, Alison Isaacs will become a Bat Mitzvah. On October 16,Daniel Himmelstein will become a Bar Mitzvah. On October 23, JesseBruner will become a Bar Mitzvah. On October 30, Micah Epstein will celebratehis Bar Mitzvah. Spend your Shabbat with us at a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. It is a wonderful and spiritual way to begin the week. Our children bringback dear memories and give us hope for our future. The Ohev ShalomBoard, of Directors wishes our children and their families a very heartymazel tov and yasher koach. There is one more, important reason to be at Ohev Shalom duringOctober. On the evening of October 30th, Ohev Shalom will honor fourworthy congregants during our annual Congregational Dinner. Join me inwishing the heartiest of mazel tovs to Frances Sheehan as Woman of theYear, Brad Ernest as Man of the Year, and Cecily Morris and Al Chazin asMeritorious Service award winners. Our congregation is fortunate to havefour congregants who have given many hours of their time to make oursynagogue a better place.See you in synagogue and see you at the dinner.Andy Szabo, PresidentNEW YEAR'SCARDSAfter many long hours at thecomputer, the New Year's cardsshould have been in your hands forthe holidays. Every action that we take matters. THE OHEV OBSERVERcvt runaThis month’s Observer is Doris Elofer, who offered the following comments on thefirst day of Rosh Hashanah. If you would like to be next month’s Observer, pleaseemail your observations to Amy Pollack at amypoldes@aol.com.Rabbi Robbins, Cantor Skobeloff,Friends,Hag Sameach, Good Yom Tov,Thank you for allowing me tospeak with you today about one ofthe things in my life that I care sodeeply about- Ohev Shalom. I trulylove being a member of this synagogue.I am grateful for our past, passionate about our present andexcited about our future. I stand inawe of those who have come beforeme because had it not been for theirstrong will and commitment, thisbuilding would not have been herefor me and my family when we setout 10 years ago to find a spiritualhome. The determined individualswho spent endless hours and theirhard earned dollars to build thissynagogue didn’t build it only forthe benefit of their own familiestheybuilt it for someone just likeme. As many of you know, I grew upin Delaware County not far fromhere. I truly was blessed with themost wonderful parents, George andJean Shinberg, both of blessed memory. My mom and dad impressedupon me all the right values andthey always led through example. Iwas taught to treat everyone withrespect, to work hard, and to helpthose who are less fortunate. Ilearned all the wonderful values ofJudaism, but sadly, we never had thejoy of sharing those values with alarger community, because, for reasonsof their own, my parents chosenot to belong to a synagogue.Perhaps it was a result of the discriminationmy mother had feltwhile trying to find a job during theDepression. Or maybe it was thatthey felt that membership just wasn’taffordable. Whatever the reason,I can assure you there was somethingmissing in our lives. There isso much to say about the importanceof community. That is why asJews we require a minyan to pray.Everything that we do is based onthe importance of community andour reliance on one another, sharingin each other’s joy and in each other’spain, yet always together. Fromthe day that Charley and I, alongwith our sons, Michael and Mark, came to Ohev Shalom, I knew I hadfound my way home. We look forwardto the years ahead in this wonderfulcommunity among the dearfriends that we have made here. Many of the individuals who gave somuch to Ohev Shalom 40 years agoare in this room today, and to all ofyou I want to say that the historyyou built here strengthened myfuture and the future of this entirecongregation and I offer to you aheartfelt thanks.Today, I stand before you passionateabout Ohev Shalom becauseI have the wonderful opportunity ofspending a good amount of time inthis building. I see first hand all thewonderful things that are happeninghere. Walk into this building on anygiven day or evening and you aresure to find something going on.Whether you are interested in learning, giving back to the community,or having a voice in shaping ourfuture, there is surely a place for youat Ohev. Our Men’s Club andSisterhood are both thriving organizations, and thanks to our very loyalminyoneers we have a place todaven each morning and can offersomeone the opportunity to fulfillthe mitzvah of saying Kaddish.Through our Social Action andMitzvah Corp efforts we serve thecommunity around us. We have ahighly dedicated Board of Directors, and a wonderful team of professionalswho we rely on to teach, supportand guide us.You know, when I look at OhevShalom, it isn’t the cinder blockwalls or tile floor that I see. I see thewisdom written on the faces of ouroldest members and the light ofhope that I see in our youngest. When I look out at you today, I see agarden, alive with color and beauty;all of us the flowers and trees thatlive and bloom here. — And there’snot a weed among us! Yes, some ofus are annuals, some perennials andthank G-d for our evergreens. Andno matter what our personal reasonsfor being planted here, we are allrooted in the same rich soil of ourtraditions and beliefs. And just asplants grow towards the sun, soshould we as we stretch our spiritsupward, renewing each day ourcommitment to G-d, to our Judaismand to this community. And it isbecause of how our garden is growingtoday that makes me so excitedabout our future. Many of you knowthat I had the chance to spend a littlebit of time last year in ourHebrew school. The task was a challengebut the reward was huge. Iwas able to see into our future andwhat I saw was remarkable. Oursmallest flowers our bright, independentthinkers waiting to bloomand their enthusiasm, although notalways about Hebrew school, isinspiring. With new members joiningthe synagogue our garden concontinuedon next page13

continued from previous pagetinues to grow and we must do allthat we can to ensure that our childrenalways have a place to comehome to.We also find ourselves now inthe middle of a very successful capitalcampaign. The dollars that arebeing raised will enable us toupgrade our mechanical systems andgive a facelift to our auditorium,Sukkah terrace, and offices. Yourcapital campaign dollars havealready paid for our new heating andair conditioning systems. I guess youcan say we are giving ourselves an”extreme makeover”. The projectstargeted in this campaign will surelychange our garden’s landscape, but itis our High Holiday pledge that willgive water to our garden today andeveryday. Now, let me put it inanother way, just in case gardeningis not your thing. Your capital campaignpledge will buy your automobile;your High Holiday pledge willbuy your gas. Your capital campaignpledge will replace your brokenheater; your High Holiday pledgewill buy your heating oil. In each ofthese examples, one cannot do withoutthe other. It isn’t any differenthere. The capital campaign will providethe dollars needed to renovateour building but it is our high holidaypledge along with our membershipdues, donations and participationin our scrip program that willpay for our everyday operatingexpenses. This money will be usedto pay for things like the salaries ofour teachers, synagogue staff andour Rabbi and Cantor who have ledus so beautifully today. Your HighHoliday pledge is critical. If you haven’t already picked upyour pledge card from the lobby, Iam asking you please to do so beforeyou leave today. The process is simple;ask yourself what part you wantto take in growing our garden. Willyou be a passing rain shower? a ray ofsunshine? Or a shot of miracle grow?Whatever your choice you can make adifference. Now, in past years we havenot had 100% participation in thiseffort. This year, I would like for us toplant a seed of change. Let each andevery one of us give as much as we possiblycan. Ohev Shalom is here for us100% of the time. Let 100% of us bethere for Ohev Shalom. So, please, pushdown a tab and watch our gardengrow!I love Ohev Shalom, and I amvery proud to be planted here.Charley, Michael, Mark and I wishall of you and your loved ones avery healthy and happy New Year.Shanah Tovah!*If you have not turned inyour pledge card, please mail itback to the synagogue. If youneed another one, please call theoffice. Thank you.NEW!!! NEW!!! NEW!!! NEW!!!sxj ,hbf,THE OHEV CHESED PROJECTCHESED are acts of kindness which as Jews we are instructed byour laws and rituals to perform every day for people in need. I amsure that as a Jew, you perform acts of kindness every day for yourfamilies and your close friends. However, there is a need in our OhevShalom community to help our fellow congregants during major lifeevents such as birth, death and sickness. Many of us do have friendsor family that help us at these challenging times. For those who donot have a support system, Rabbi Robbins has asked me to formallyorganize CHESED deeds to make sure ALL members of Ohev receivesupport during their various milestones. The best part of CHESED is that there are no meetings to attend. Iwill be in charge of facilitating assistance to Ohev members in need ofsupport. It will work like this: I (or someone else) will call the family orindividual to discuss their needs. Next, you will receive a phone call toask you to perform an act of CHESED. You may be asked to prepare adinner for a family who just had a baby, to visit an ill person at home orat the hospital, to attend a Shiva service or to help to prepare or orderfood for Shiva. Also, you may be asked to help a family with an ill parentor child with meals, errands or babysitting. There is no need tosign-up (but please call or e-mail me if you want to help coordinate orhave any ideas). At some point during the year, you will probably get acall. You will be able to fulfill this mitzvah on your own time andschedule. This is what Ohev is all about, CHESED- - helping each otherin times of need and fulfilling our Jewish obligations. Thank you.Rise Skobeloff610-874-5565 / scoby@comcast.net14
