Begin a discussion <strong>of</strong> the ethical considerations<strong>of</strong> respect for persons and harms and benefits.4. Ask students the following questions to illustrate how pressuringpeople to participate can be disrespectful.• What if I said you had to be in this study to pass my class?• What if I <strong>of</strong>fer you $5 each to be part <strong>of</strong> the study?• What if I <strong>of</strong>fer you $1,000 each to be part <strong>of</strong> the study?• What if you decided halfway through that you wanted to stop beingin the study, but I did not allow you to stop participating?Respect for Persons: Not treating someone as a mere means to a goalor end. In some cases, it is also a matter <strong>of</strong>enabling a person to make choices or supporting the person in the choiceshe or she makes.5. Note that ethicists distinguish between different types <strong>of</strong>pressure. Briefly introduce the concepts <strong>of</strong> coercion, undueinducement, and exploitation.Coercion refers to a threat that makes you worse <strong>of</strong>f no matter whichoutcome you choose (“your money or your life”).
