Explain to students that they will now use case studies to identifythe criteria they believe should be included in a fair policy forallocating livers for transplantation.These very specific case studies will help students focus on the ethicalconsideration <strong>of</strong> fairness as they identify criteria. The case studies arethe building blocks for ultimately arriving at a fair liver-allocation policythat is applicable to all cases and not just these four patients.2. Tell students that they will be part <strong>of</strong> a committee advising adoctor about which <strong>of</strong> the four patients should get the liver. Whatwould be most fair? Ask them to be ready to explain their reasons.3. Remind students that the ethical question at hand is, How canscarce resources (in this case, a liver) be most fairly distributed?Write the question on the board or chart paper as a concretereminder <strong>of</strong> the goal <strong>of</strong> the activity.4. Create a large two-column chart, and record on it the criteria andrelevant facts that students mention.
