Soult,however, seeing how matters stood, and deemingfur<strong>the</strong>r resistance useless, withdrew <strong>the</strong> wholearmybehind <strong>the</strong> <strong>ca</strong>nal at 5 o'clock.The French that day had lost 5 generalsand 3000 men killed and wounded ;while <strong>the</strong>allies lost 4 generals and 4600 men. The <strong>91st</strong>had 1 sergeant and 17 men killed, and 7<strong>of</strong>ficers namely, Colonel William Douglas, whocommanded <strong>the</strong> brigade after Pack was wounded ;Meade, Walsh, Callander, J. Macdougall, Hood,and Colin Macdougall and 98 men wounded :a lamentable spilling <strong>of</strong> blood, and useless, asNapoleon had already abdi<strong>ca</strong>ted.On <strong>the</strong> llth Soult was again ready to fight,but Wellington was not prepared togoon until<strong>the</strong> 12th.
