The distance tobe marched was not less than two miles, beingunder fire the whole time. The operation thereforetook a long time, as it was necessary tocover and protect by a heavy fire of artillerythe advance of this division.An officer of the 42nd, in hisreminiscences ofthat day, says," Early on Sunday morning ourtents were struck, and we moved with the otherregimentsneighbourhoodon a level ground,view of theof the sixth division towards theof Toulouse until ordered to haltfrom whence we had a distinctenemy's position on a ridgeof hills.Major-General Pack came up, and, calling theofficers, non-commissioned officers, and men of thebrigade around him, addressed them to this effect :'We are this day to attack the enemy your;business will be to take possession of thesefortified heights which yousee towards the front.
