44 HISTORICAL RECORDS OF THECHAPTER III.Peninsular War, 1812, to affair at Aire, February, 1814.1812. IN September the 91st were for a second timeunder orders to take part in the Peninsular War,and on the 18th and 19th of that month theyemharked at Chatham in small craft, whichdropped down to the Nore, where the men weretranshipped to the transports Malabar, Diomede,and Success, which set sail on the 20th; butbeing dispersed by a gale, they arrived at Corunnaon the following dates :the Diomede on the 6th,the Success on the 9th, and the Malabar on the12th of October, and the troops were landed on thesucceeding days. The Malabar conveyed 300 menof the Guards in addition to the men of the 91st.On the 14th the regiment set out to join thegrand army under the Duke of Wellington,arriving at Yillafranca, about twelve miles fromBenevento, on the 1st of November. Here informationwas received, on the following day, that
9 1ST ARGYLLSHIRE HIGHLANDERS. 45the enemy was in force at the last-named 1812place ;and the 91st, with a detachment of Guards, thewhole being under the orders of Major MacNeal(91st), moved in the direction of Braganza, on thefrontier of Portugal, where they arrived on the 5th,and occupied the place and its forts, despatchingcouriers tofind out where the grand army was,and obtain orders as to their future movements.The 91st, on joining the Duke's army, wasplaced in the sixth division in the Highland, orGeneral Pack's brigade, then under command ofColonel Stirling of the 42nd Highlanders. Ongoing into winter quarters, the regiment wasremoved to San Remo, where it remained for fivemonths.In April the army was collected together, andWellington prepared to91st starting on the 14th of Mayadvance northward, thewith the restof the troops,and on the 26th the advancedguard of the allied troopscame in contact withthe French under Yellatle, and drove him acrossthe Torneo river. Two days after this, the mainbody arrived in the country between Zamoraand Toro, and on the 31st a junction was formedwith Graham's troops, which formed the leftwingof Wellington's army.
