McBirnie.In this affair <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> Sergeant-MajorPatrick Cahil was brought into notice, onaccount <strong>of</strong> his conspicuous conduct in securingand <strong>ca</strong>rrying <strong>of</strong>f one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> battalion colours, when<strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficer who was in charge was wounded ;forhis bravery on this oc<strong>ca</strong>sion, he was recommendedand promoted from <strong>the</strong> ranks, receiving a commissionas ensign.In September this battalion returned to England,arriving at Deal from Ostend, and proceedingto Canterbury, to be quartered <strong>the</strong>re for a month,when it embarked at Gravesend for Ayr;and on <strong>the</strong>25th <strong>of</strong> December, 1815,it was reduced at Perth.The above history <strong>of</strong> this battalion is all that<strong>ca</strong>n be found out about it, as <strong>the</strong> <strong>records</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>1st battalion do not mention anydetails <strong>of</strong> itsexistence, and probably for most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> period inwhich it was formed it was only used as arecruiting depot for <strong>the</strong> 1st battalion, whichduring most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se years was employed in <strong>the</strong>Peninsular War.
