McBirnie.In this affair the name of Sergeant-MajorPatrick Cahil was brought into notice, onaccount of his conspicuous conduct in securingand carrying off one of the battalion colours, whenthe officer who was in charge was wounded ;forhis bravery on this occasion, he was recommendedand promoted from the ranks, receiving a commissionas ensign.In September this battalion returned to England,arriving at Deal from Ostend, and proceedingto Canterbury, to be quartered there for a month,when it embarked at Gravesend for Ayr;and on the25th of December, 1815,it was reduced at Perth.The above history of this battalion is all thatcan be found out about it, as the records of the1st battalion do not mention anydetails of itsexistence, and probably for most of the period inwhich it was formed it was only used as arecruiting depot for the 1st battalion, whichduring most of these years was employed in thePeninsular War.
