Thusended the share taken by the 91st in the firstoccupation of the Cape of Good Hope by theEnglish.In June, 1803, a general order was publisheddirecting that each company throughout the armyshould have an effective captain, and consequentlythat field officers should no longer command acompany, which up to this date they had done.The rank of captain-lieutenant was also abolished.The regimenthad been reduced to a peace establishmenton their arrival in England.In September the 91st were orderedto Guernsey,at which place they did not remain verylong, leaving it again for England in the folio w-1804. in g Aprilfirst to be ; quartered at Shoreham,and afterwards at Lewes.Directly after the return of the regiment toEngland,it was notified that an additional forcewas required byhis Majesty, and that the levy

Captains William Douglas andDonald MacNeal, and Lieutenants Duncan Stuartand Eobert Lowrie, were selected, and cameforward on this occasion.In August of this year his Majesty waspleased to direct that a second battalion should beforthwith formed from the men to be raised inaccordance with the Act of Parliament known asthe " Defence Act," from the counties of Perth,Argyll, and Bute the; recruiting officer's headquartersto be at Perth. The 1st battalion wasto be kept up to strength through this newbattalion.In March, 1805,the 2nd battalion was still at isos.Perth. It will be as well to record at once theshort history of this battalion before continuingthat of the 1st or original one.On the 7th of April, 1809, the Highlanddress 1309.was discontinued to be worn. In 1811 this isn.battalion was stationed at Canterbury, and twoyears later was again in Scotland, quartered atAyr. In July of the same year,it embarkedfor Germany under command of Major-General
