On leaving the regiment wasappointed assistant-adjutant and quarter-master-general North BritishDistrict, and subsequently commanded a brigade dep6t.Squirl, William. Prior to entering the British army, served asa lieutenant in the Austrian service under Marshal Radetski, in thecampaign of 1848-49, and was present at the battles of Montarra andNovarra (wounded), and subsequently at the siege of Leghorn. Ensign,llth May, 1849 ; lieutenant, 8th July, 1851. Served with theregiment during the Kaffir War of 1850-53 (medal). Adjutant,19th May, 1854, to 1856.
