Commanded a party <strong>of</strong> 200 men <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> regiment and 180Hottentot burghers which forced <strong>the</strong> pass in <strong>the</strong> Amatola Mountainson <strong>the</strong> 16th April, 1846, inflicting a loss <strong>of</strong> 200 men on <strong>the</strong> enemy ;on this oc<strong>ca</strong>sion had his charger shot whilst assisting a wounded manto mount (mentioned in despatches). Commanded 175 men <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>regiment on <strong>the</strong> 17th April, 1846, despatched to <strong>the</strong> assistance <strong>of</strong>Major Gibson, 7th Dragoon Guards, by which timely reinforcement<strong>the</strong> ammunition waggons were saved, <strong>the</strong> baggage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> divisionbeing in <strong>the</strong> hands <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> enemy (mentioned in despatches). Commanded<strong>the</strong> regiment dispersed to meet <strong>the</strong> disposition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> enemyon <strong>the</strong> retreat to Block Drift on <strong>the</strong> 18th April, and held <strong>the</strong> Driftfor two hours in <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> an overwhelming force <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> enemy(mentioned in despatches). Commanded <strong>the</strong> advance post at BlockDrift on <strong>the</strong> 12th May, when it was attacked by 2000 Kaffirs, whowere beaten <strong>of</strong>f with considerable loss. Appointed commandant <strong>of</strong>Fort Beaufort, and subsequently to command one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> three columns<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> attack against <strong>the</strong> chief Sandilla, which terminated <strong>the</strong> war.Specially mentioned in Colonel Somerset's despatches <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 17th and
