314 APPENDICES.H.REGIMENTAL RECORD BOOK.THE present handsome book was presented to the regimentby Colonel Bertie Gordon, at Kamptee, on the 20th ofNovember, 1861. In his preface he relates his object forso doing, and states that before that time the records hadbeen kept in an irregular and shameful manner, the entriesbeing left in most cases to the Orderly Room clerks to enter, and finally the volume had been lost. He therefore determinedto have them re-written from documents in possessionof the regiment, and adds to the preface the following words :"A very special duty devolves on the officer who commandsthe regiment, in preparing and recording in the volume, which contains the history of the regiment, every eventillustrative of its state during each year of its existence ;of the scenes and places of its service; of its composition, and the changesin. its different ranks, its uniform andestablishment; of the marches and voyages which it performs;of the deeds of valour, of benevolence, of endurance, and of whatever else may be worthy of remembrance forafter times, in which its individual members or itself asa body may have borne a part."These records, up to the time the book was presented, were beautifully written out by Private Frederick Harlington,of the 91st, the remainder being in the handwriting ofthe successive commanding officers.
