Under <strong>the</strong>se circumstances,it was decidedto station troops along <strong>the</strong> border.In December a meeting was held between <strong>the</strong>commissioners <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Natal Government andIndunas respecting <strong>the</strong> Zulu king. The formerconsisted <strong>of</strong> Colonel Forester Walker, C.B., ScotsGuards, and Messrs. J. Shepstone, Brownlie, andFynn. The Natal Government representativespresented an ultimatum, which demanded finesfor raids and outrages committed by Zulus, alsoinsisted that promises made by Cetywayoat hiscoronation should be <strong>ca</strong>rried out, and fur<strong>the</strong>rdemanded that <strong>the</strong> Zulu armyshould be disbanded;that a British resident should be appointed,and should live in <strong>the</strong> Zulu country, andbe a medium <strong>of</strong> communi<strong>ca</strong>tion between <strong>the</strong> twogovernments ; and also that <strong>the</strong> missionariesshould be respected and allowed to return to<strong>the</strong>ir places, from which <strong>the</strong>y had been drivenout by <strong>the</strong> Zulus. No notice being taken <strong>of</strong> thisultimatum, a force advanced into Zululand, undercommand <strong>of</strong> Lord Chelmsford, in five columns,during <strong>the</strong> second week <strong>of</strong> January,1879.
