9 1ST ARGYLLSHIRE HIGHLANDERS. 259CHAPTER XVI.England Natal Causes of Zulu War.ON the llth of February news was received in 1879.England of the greatdisaster in Zululand atIsandlhwana, where the camp of part of the troopsunder command of Lord Chelmsford was surprisedby the Zulus, and the force nearly annihilated.This intelligence caused the Grovernment to decideon sending out reinforcements at once, andamong the battalions of infantry selected was the91st, who were ordered to prepare for embarkationin the s.s. Pretoria, one of the steamersbelonging to the Union Company, on the 19th ofthe month.In order to bring the 91st up to the requiredstrength, volunteers were received from thefollowing regiments viz.2/5th, l/8th, l/10th,2/19th, 2/20th, 32nd, 36th, 41st, 55th, 84th, and108th, the total number required being 374 men.The last party of volunteers to arrive only joined on
