9 1ST ARGYLLSHIRE HIGHLANDERS. 7ismerely a narrow passage between a steep 1795.mountain and <strong>the</strong> sea ;after this <strong>the</strong> road crossesa sandy plain,which forms part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> isthmuswhich divides Tahle Bay from False Bay.On <strong>the</strong> 14th <strong>the</strong> English troops struck <strong>the</strong>ir<strong>ca</strong>mp, and began <strong>the</strong>ir advance on Wynberg;littleresistance being met with from <strong>the</strong> enemy,as <strong>the</strong> burghers deserted in such numbers thatsoon any fur<strong>the</strong>r chance <strong>of</strong> a fight was gone.The battalion companies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 98th, under ColonelCampbell, formed <strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> British line,while <strong>the</strong> grenadier company formed part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>grenadier battalion under Lieutenant - ColonelFerguson, and <strong>the</strong> light company, part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>light battalion, under Major King, both <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>84th Regiment. The <strong>ca</strong>sualties <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 98th onthis oc<strong>ca</strong>sion were four men wounded.The Dutch now retreatedtowards Cape Town,and hostilities were suspended for twenty-fourhours to arrangeterms <strong>of</strong> surrender. On <strong>the</strong>16th <strong>of</strong> September <strong>the</strong> 98th entered Cape Castle,and relieved <strong>the</strong> Dutch garrison by <strong>ca</strong>pitulation,<strong>the</strong> latter, however, marching out with all <strong>the</strong>honours <strong>of</strong> war. Sir James Craig was installedgovernor; and in this manner was ended <strong>the</strong>rule <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands East India Company
