9 1ST ARGYLLSHIRE HIGHLANDERS. 253Shortly after <strong>the</strong> wedding <strong>of</strong> H.R.H. <strong>the</strong> Prin- 1872.cess Louise, her Majesty expressed a wish toconfer some distinguishing mark on <strong>the</strong> regimentto commemorate <strong>the</strong> event, and desired thatColonel Sprot should be communi<strong>ca</strong>ted with on<strong>the</strong> subject as to what <strong>the</strong> regimentshould like.Colonel Sprot, after consulting with <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers,suggested <strong>the</strong> kilt, which proposal her Majestyreadily accepted. The Commander-in-Chief wasduly communi<strong>ca</strong>ted with, as also <strong>the</strong> Secretary<strong>of</strong> State for War ;but objections being raised by<strong>the</strong> former on <strong>the</strong> ground <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> difficulty <strong>of</strong>recruiting for kilted corps, and by<strong>the</strong> latter on<strong>the</strong> increased expense <strong>of</strong> dress, <strong>the</strong> idea was for<strong>the</strong> time abandoned. This being made known toColonel Sprot, he intimated that <strong>the</strong> corps wouldlike to be designated <strong>the</strong> " Princess Louise's<strong>Argyllshire</strong> Highlanders," and bear on itscolour<strong>the</strong> boar's head (crest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Argyll family),with <strong>the</strong> motto," Nil oblivisearis."Accordingly, on <strong>the</strong> 2nd <strong>of</strong> April, <strong>the</strong> followingnotice appearedin <strong>the</strong> London Gazette :"War Office, April 2nd, 1872."
