9 1ST ARGYLLSHIRE HIGHLANDERS. 253Shortly after the wedding of H.R.H. the Prin- 1872.cess Louise, her Majesty expressed a wish toconfer some distinguishing mark on the regimentto commemorate the event, and desired thatColonel Sprot should be communicated with onthe subject as to what the regimentshould like.Colonel Sprot, after consulting with the officers,suggested the kilt, which proposal her Majestyreadily accepted. The Commander-in-Chief wasduly communicated with, as also the Secretaryof State for War ;but objections being raised bythe former on the ground of the difficulty ofrecruiting for kilted corps, and bythe latter onthe increased expense of dress, the idea was forthe time abandoned. This being made known toColonel Sprot, he intimated that the corps wouldlike to be designated the " Princess Louise'sArgyllshire Highlanders," and bear on itscolourthe boar's head (crest of the Argyll family),with the motto," Nil oblivisearis."Accordingly, on the 2nd of April, the followingnotice appearedin the London Gazette :"War Office, April 2nd, 1872."
