Colonel Gordon resumed the attemptshortly after he obtained command in 1854, andfound a willing and powerful supporter in theDuke of Argyll, who was naturally anxious tohave the regiment raised by his ancestors oncemore recognized by its original name of " TheArgyllshire Highlanders." A copy of some ofthe letters on the subject are to be seen in theregimental records.In 1859 he directed a letter to the HorseGuards, pointing out the Scotch originregiment and the history of its losingof thethe kiltand tartan, and asking that the corps of pipersmight be re-formed ;to which he received replythat his request could not be complied with.In 1861 he again wrote, preferringlike requests,and again giving a history of the dressof the regiment, and received in reply H.R.H.the Commander-in-Chief's regret that at presenthe was unable to entertain his requests. Afterthis followed a correspondence with theDuke ofArgyll, the end of which was, the authoritiesagreed to the regiment wearing part of the Highlanddress.In the same year the regimental dinner wasfirst started, and was presided over by General
