236 HISTORICAL RECORDS OF THE1858. ordered to proceed with 200 men against theRohillas ;on their march they came across afield force under Brigadier-General Hill, fromHyderabad, that had been engaged two dayspreviously with the insurgents, whom they hadfound shut up in a mud fort, where they wereattacked by the native infantry, who, however,were not successful in drivingthem out. Theinsurgents had escaped during the night, beingpursued by the Hyderabad Irregular Cavalryunder Captain Nightingale (whose brother wasserving in the 93rd) and Lieutenant Clogstown ;the latter out-distanced the rest of the cavalry,and catching up the insurgents, rode straight inamong them, killed several, and dispersed theremainder, for which gallant deed he received theVictoria Cross.The remainder of the wing, under Captain Bond,were attached for a time to a force under SirHugh Rose, and were mounted on ponies.MajorSavage did not rejoin the regiment with the1859. leftwing until the 25th of February, 1859.On the 7th of March Lieutenant-Colonel BertieGordon arrived from England and assumedcommand ;and on the 9th a small detachment,under Lieutenant Gurney, consistingof Lieu-

On the same dayCaptain Battiscombe marched a part of a fieldforce directed on Mooltye and Baitool. On the27th Major Patterson joinedand took commandof this force, having Lieutenant Hollwayas hisstaff-officer, which remained out until the 18th ofApril. A similar field force was sent out onthe 22nd of April, for a short time to the samedistricts, under command of Major Savage, withLieutenant Perkins as staff-officer.On the 7th of November, 1859, No. 1companyjoined the irregular forces, the services of whichwere required to disperse a band of marauderswhich had for some time held defined positions inthe hills between Chindwarrah and the NerbuddaRiver. These marauders were dispersed andtheir strongholds taken.The first officer of the regiment who died inIndiawas Lieutenant Obbard, who was attackedby cholera, and expired on the 24th of April,1860, at Oomerapore. Some strong drafts arrivedfor the regiment in January and October of thisyear; the former commanded by Captain Greggwith two ensigns, Kemm and Eoberts.
