Small detachmentswere furnished to Lixuri and Fort St.George, <strong>the</strong> former being<strong>the</strong> second town <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>island, with a population <strong>of</strong> above 5000. It ison <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn side <strong>of</strong> Argostoli Bay, abouttwenty miles distant by road. Fort St. Georgeis about five miles inland ;it was an ancientVenetian fortress, and crowns a l<strong>of</strong>ty and isolatedhill.
